What is the dumbest case of fandom infighting you have ever seen?

Yeah, I like George, but that song reminds me that I think John's the only one that had a stellar solo career. George only had one amazing album, and then got repetitive. Paul's only had a couple great ones, and he's wallowed in mediocrity ever since, which is something I think even he realises because when he's not playing his most popular tunes, he's playing Beatles songs. And then there's Ringo, who... Well...
I'd like to thank you and Mangod for proving my point about Beatles' infighting that still occurs 44 years after their breakup! ;) I also want to thank you two for making this a polite discussion rather than true infighting. If anyone wants to see real infighting, go to dedicated Beatles forums. Be warned, however, that some of them are as vitriolic as any poorly moderated video game site.

Since I don't wish to hijack this thread, I'm going to exit stage left now. Thanks again for the fun time, you two! :)

And BTW, King, I totally agree with you about Lennon's solo career in comparison to the others. In my humble opinion, The Plastic Ono Band album alone puts him at the top.

uttering the phrase "who is best pony?" can often start a heated debate (that can devolve to a shouting match) among bronies if said bronies are drunk enough ... (I have witnessed this several times at cons)

Let's go classic: Early Beatles or later Beatles? Furthermore, regarding the later Beatles, Paul's pop songs or John's dirty rockers?
In relation to music theres the whole bon scott/brian johnson thing (which isnt really that heated) and also the david lee roth vs sammy hagar thing with van halen fans which is very heated

P.s. i have to agree that harrison is very overlooked when compared with lennon and mcCartney

The reactionary wave of analysis and defense of the MLP tv show after the fanbase came under attack. A certain group of people came together to "critically examine" the show and explain why they liked it so much. That by itself is harmless, and even beneficial in some ways. However, it lead them to compare the show to it's previous iterations and other cartoons. They've put the show on such a high pedestal, to them, it's no longer a kids show. It's cringe worthy. It makes sense though. Bronies have always tried to say that the show is "manly," [it isn't] it's not about selling little girls toys [it is]. It's like a mental disorder. The stigma about watching the show was so bad for some, the only way they could cope was to build it up to the point where it's no longer something to be mocked.

Essentially all arguments about aesthetic choices in sequels to popular games. Like when Ninja Theory had the SHEER AUDACITY to come up with their own art direction and aesthetic and do new, exciting things with an old IP. Judging by the fan reaction, you'd guess they were breaking into houses at night, stealing people's copies of old Devil May Cry games and burning them.

Remember when Infamous and Prototype were both out?

Yeah that was a laugh whenever you dropped that in a discussion.

In the same regard: Beatles vs Rolling Stones. Putting that one up is like waiting for a bomb to go off.

Don't forget Equestria Girls, the 65th episode cutoff paranoia, and Cadancegate! This is a fandom that manages a major flareup nearly twice a season.
I especially like those little flareup where one side loves the new episode while the other sides hates said new episode... and then they both text-fight to see who's more in the right...

OT: Besides the Brony fandom (especially in EQD's comment section), seeing Nostalgia Critic fans argue over the "old style" and "new style" of Nostalgia Critic's "reviews"... (Reminds me when Demo Reel got a lot of beef for just existing...)

As a long time shipper, I have to agree with those that say that shipping can be a deceptively dark, incredibly hateful community. You guys who only see it from the outside don't even see the whole thing, when you're mired in a ship fandom you start to see ugliness, personal attack, and shadenfreude to make 4chan proud... all because of differing tastes in pairings.

I still have nightmare flashbacks of the old days when I was neck deep in the Ichigo x Rukia versus Ichigo x Orihime wars, despite not really being involved with either camp. Ulquiorra x Orihime for life!
Oooh, I've seen it from the inside. I remember my shipping days from Avatar. I stayed out of the biggest debate (Kataang vs. Zutara) but even just witnessing that was enough to really turn me off the shipping community. Not to mention all the angry ship-fic authors who have come for my head because I dared to give their fic a bad review.

Oh lord... and that's not even getting into reviewer rivalry such as AVGN vs NC or the more broad 'best reviewer on TGWTG'.

But I'd say that the BIG split is 'The Spoony Incident' ... everything changed for the fans during this incident. We got to see everyone's true colors and the idealized internet celebrities became flawed internet people. Nothing splits a fanbase more than these kinds of incidents.

You know, as bad as those incidents got, those are small potatoes in my book compared to the flareup that happens every time someone draws fan-art of any of the mane six being non-white.

Now, I love the MLP fandom. Frankly, they're the only reason I keep as up-to-date with the show as I do. But good lord, the amount of bile and hatred that gets thrown around when you start throwing race into MLP is startling at times.

All the incidents you guys mentioned blew over to a degree. Even Alicorn Twilight hatred seems to have died down. But you post a pic of Fluttershy being Muslim, and suddenly everyone loses their minds.

Oh, come now. Muslim isn't a race. Any race can be Muslim. Could you draw an atheist Fluttershy or a Unitarian Fluttershy as distinct from a white Fluttershy?

I'll grant the fandom has trouble imagining the pony as being non-whites. Most of the fandom is white; they imagine characters to be white by default. All the voices sound stereotypically American white and of course the owners of the voices are white. If there was a wider range of accents there might not be such an imagination gap.

I've never actually seen a Pony race flare-up, but I'm not surprised that it's a lurking issue.

Weather or not Commander shepard is female or male..or which is "legit"

[b/]they specifically said there is no set cannon in regards to his/her gender[/b] YES male shep is part of the marketing, he is used more often [b/]but[/b] they did specifically avoid mentioning shps gender is everything else (and I don't bloody care if it "hurts your imersion" to see a female solder). Now EA being EA and the way fate usually goes I wouldn't be OVERLY surprised if they went with a "cannon" male shep some way down the line (ugghhh the blasphemy) [b/]but untill then[/b] we can accept the fact that it doesn't matter....my shep isn't anymore legit than your shep and your shep isn't more legit than mine.

on a less controversial note..

The Assari from mass effect...

look I "get" that there are sci fi-ish explanations of the ins and outs of the assari and [i/]why[/i] they look how they look and I appreciate the possible nod towards them not looking like that.

But lets not kid outselfs....[i/]they are hot lesbian aliens[/i] you can't possibly try and explain that away with a straight face...it is what it is...just enjoy it

[sub/] all that said thats why I love that running gag on Futurama where Kiff is considered the universal standard for beauty [/sub]
two points, i love Kiff, he's adorable no matter what, AND WHO THE HELL COULD SAY 'NO' TO ASARI!! BLASPHAMY!! *glomps closets blue-psudo-female*

i rather love the whole concept of the Asari, just trying to figure them out, but no i'm not silly enough to 'justify' them as anything more then this generations' 'Orion slave girls' from OG Star Trek... as that one guy from Megus XLR stated 'GREEN SKINNED GIRLS!! I GOT DIGITS FROM GREEN SKINNED GIRLS!!' now if they had waited a few years, we would have been hearing 'BLUE SKINNED GIRLS!!' amiright? :D but one thing about them i love to snort at, and may have started an argument on more then one thread is that technically they aren't 'female', as being 'female' would require another 'male' gender in their species, as there is no other gender, they are simply that, monogendered and therefore neither male or female, even if they obviously have the more womanly bits...

suppose that's a bit on-topic if a tangent, debating gender of alien species in a fiction *Snorts*

though my experience of 'so ridiculous why are we even talking about it'... has anyone else here ever ventured into an anime forum? the horrors...

but yes... shipping mostly... and the justifying of it... always good for a giggle but run for the hills if you make a comment *snickers*

I've heard tell, but never seen for myself, of terrible bouts between fans of the same fiction who vehemently believe in a particular pairing between characters.

I've heard they will go as far as considering their ideal partnership as canon, and denounce any notions saying otherwise, and will go into a fit if the fiction does not realize their wish.

For all my time spent in Kingdom Hearts fan communities and discussions, I have thankfully--miraculously--never seen anything more than "we disagree but I don't want this to get out of hand."

Why people attach themselves so wholly to imaginary pairings between imaginary characters astounds me.

Well, see... that is why people fight over it. Because people who played FFVII back then keep holding onto it.

Because she's only Aeris in the localized version of FFVII. And I hope both you and I can agree that the translating work in FFVII was not exactly top-notch, her name notwithstanding. In the Japanese FFVII manual, Crisis Core, Kingdom Hearts and wherever else since FFVII, she has been named Aerith.

His name is still Squall. Leon is a nickname.

Something to note is that the guest characters from Final Fantasy don't quite line up from their source materials. They're altered versions of those characters set within the KH universe. They don't even come from their source material worlds, let alone have the same backstories or relationships.

MegaTen fans have some of the dumbest instances of in-fighting I've ever seen.

You've got the people who only like the Shin Megami Tensei series and hate all the Persona players...

and then you've got MORE in-fighting amongst the Persona players between people who liked P1/P2 and think those who came in with P3/P4 are ruining the series for everyone...and then you've also got JUST the P4 people who fight against everyone else, ever, trying to claim the the Megami Tensei franchise will never have a more precious jewel than P4.

MegaTen fans are nuts. There are layers upon layers of in-fighting and hatred amongst us. We're like a big onion of hate and hurt feelings.
well it is MegaTen... so... yea... i expect that *snickers*

i'm going to sit over here in my Digital Devil Saga corner, with mouth-boobies and switch-foot and nibble on popcorn while the 'kids' and grandpa keep fighting... because /CLEARLY/ we're the superior ones... i mean /COME ON/ we've got the most legit of the systems, and the hardest optional boss in any game ever made :D

*snicker snicker lol lol*

word bro... though i think the only thing that gets worse or as bad as those trenchs is over in Naruto where its either Naruto x Sakura, Sakura x Sasuke, Naruto x Sasuke, Naruto x Hinata, Hinata x Sasuke, Hinata x Sakura... etc. etc. etc. and it gets downright bloody... and that's only FOUR people out of the cast... where the ships are effectively EVERYONE X EVERYONE... RUN FOR THE HILLS!!

i'll just stick to my little boat and scurry on under the radar... as i'm sure my ships are either 'obvious' along with canon or just crack in my head... and i'm okay with that ._.

Is the Prime Directive meant to protect insufficiently advanced species from explotation, or just an excuse to let people die?
Captain Kathryn Janeway; Prime Directive fanatic, anti-Prime Directive pragmatist, genocidal lunatic, or the broken shell of a woman with too much on her plate who continues to struggle to bring her crew home?
... still the best captain in all the series :D

that's another one, specific to Star Trek: 'who's the best captain?' cavated with 'does Sisco count as a 'captain'?'
