I've heard tell, but never seen for myself, of terrible bouts between fans of the same fiction who vehemently believe in a particular pairing between characters.
I've heard they will go as far as considering their ideal partnership as canon, and denounce any notions saying otherwise, and will go into a fit if the fiction does not realize their wish.
For all my time spent in
Kingdom Hearts fan communities and discussions, I have thankfully--miraculously--never seen anything more than "we disagree but I don't want this to get out of hand."
Why people attach themselves so wholly to imaginary pairings between imaginary characters astounds me.

Whether Aeris should be called Aeris or Aerith. Her name in the actual game is Aeris. Quod erat motherfucking demonstrandum.
Well, see...
that is why people fight over it. Because people who played
FFVII back then keep holding onto it.
Because she's only Aeris in the localized version of
FFVII. And I hope both you and I can agree that the translating work in
FFVII was not exactly top-notch, her name notwithstanding. In the Japanese
FFVII manual,
Crisis Core,
Kingdom Hearts and wherever else since
FFVII, she has been named Aerith.

Not to mention chaing Squall's name to Leon.
His name is still Squall. Leon is a nickname.
Something to note is that the guest characters from
Final Fantasy don't quite line up from their source materials. They're altered versions of those characters set within the
KH universe. They don't even come from their source material worlds, let alone have the same backstories or relationships.
