Never had a problem with iTunes, unlike Windows Media Player which had a shuffle that kept playing the same handful of songs way too frequently for it to be random, and winamp which seems to struggle while other things on my computer are running.

Back when I had my third Ipod, I could not for the life of me figure out how to put music onto it without downloading every single damn song anyone in my house owned.
There is no "Select and drag to ipod" mindless easy task that I could have used.
For the record, there is such a setting. When you plug in your iPod, click on the device in iTunes. On the main page is a checkbox that reads "Manually manage music and videos".
