let's see... there was some thingy whose name i cannot remember (instead of a NES, i guess; it had Tennis, some weird fighter-plane game aaand... can'r remember the third. the resolution was basically nonexistent, but its joystick was cool ^^), then a GameBoy, SNES, PC, N64, Gamecube, NDS, PC (only the last two are used for... well, quite some time (=years) now :) possibly in part because i don't have a tv)

I started with an Atari XT but I didn't really get into video games until the NES. In terms of what I've owned.

Nintendo Consoles
NES
SNES
N64
Gamecube
Wii

Sony Consoles
Playstation
Playstation 2

Microsoft Consoles
Xbox 360

Nintendo Handhelds
Gameboy
DS

I still consider the SNES to be the best console ever made and I'll probably end up getting a Wii U when the next Smash Brothers game comes out. I'll probably end up getting a PS4 at some point too.

Nintendo NES which me and my brother got for christmas in 1987. My very own first game was Ice Climber and my little brother got Super Mario Brothers. I later saved up to Metroid, Zelda and Zelda 2 while my brother got Castlevania, Castlevania 2 and Faxanadu (which was pretty hard but quite fun).

I later bought an Amiga 500, which we had lots of fun on until I bought my first PC, an IBM PC clone called blue lightning. It was a reverse engineered 486DX2 which ran a speedy 66MHz, had dual channel memory (a whopping 4 megs!). That's when I learned DOS and made combat with EMM386 to make my games run; good times.

It later got updated to a Pentium 133 and a couple of months later, the Pentium 166MMX was released and I did my very first deep dive into the box itself and swapped the CPU! This was way before the Internet was mainstream (no anandtech or tomshardware to refer to) so I was pretty chuffed with my achievement.

Many PC's later, I finally decided to get back to consoles. However, my idea wasn't to play games on it. I'd just bought my first FullHD LCD-TV and I wanted a bluray player to go with it. This was back in blu ray's infancy, when HD-DVD and Bluray were still battling for supremacy. I decided that bluray were more progressive of the two tech's and realised my best option would be a PS3.

I didn't expect to get hooked on a joypad again, but my PS3 library is currently quite big, more games next to the PS3 than in my Steam account (just), so that's where it's at.

I'm not sure if I'll buy a PS4 at this point in time, but maybe I'll get one if Sony keeps decent relationships with the consumer, unlike Microsoft.

commadore 64

What did you choose in successive generations, and why?
amiga 1200 dad bought it.

gameboy christmas present.

psone birthday present.

pc inherited. pentium 233 with some extremely poor agp card, i believe? struggled to render anything.

ps2 bought with my own cash. ( frankly the best money I ever spent, and I still have it now. )

pc upgrade, pentium 4 some verison or another.. 'shrug'

psp it's a psp, i needed to go places..

pc built this, for wow. core 2, gtx 260.

pc upgrades, added i5, watercooling.

pc upgrades, added ivy i7, ssd's, 24bit 128db sound card, sli 480's and a micro-nuclear power plant.
( ok i jest, but the psu was £260.. >.> )

pc Current gen, considering upgrades of the above.. waiting for new games.

chiefohara said:
What do you have now, and what do you intend to purchase next gen?
pc.
probably more pc parts, slim chance of a ps4 if the exclusives are actually good and not just junk wrapped in a nice graphic engine.

microsoft's monetizing advertising device can go blow, not interested even if it were free.

-Gamecube (went through 5 of them)
-Nintendo DS (broken screens)
-Nintendo Gameboy advance (broken screen)
-Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP (currently working)
-Xbox360 (collects dust it used to be white now its dust grey)
-Gaming pc i5 3570 8gb 1333ddr3 Geforce gtx 550ti (has currently 347 games for it for steam,I eventually plan to upgrade to a GTX 780,790*if it comes out, or titan by november)
My future console I want to eventually obtain is a Wii U likely closer to 2014 when those sweet e3 releases are mostly out
You could say I have had a alright history with games I kept breaking handhelds in moves so whatever, either way my gaming is likely going to continue to be dominated by pc and once I get a Wii U I am likely going to use that also.

Why are so many people listing computer systems when it is clearly a console thread...

The NES was my first system ever, and had it for many, many years. When I won an Atari Lynx at a drawing competition,
I sold both the NES and the Lynx to be able to afford a SNES.
It was this system that has stayed the closest to me, despite later buying a PS2 (my brother already owning a PS1).
Bought a Gamecube because there was a special offer with Fire Emblem for it, and because there was a special Zelda game
that included almost every earlier Zelda game.
Next was the Wii, which was amazing for a year, and then I kinda forgot about it (a friend borrowed it, and when
he asked when I wanted it back a year later, I was like "oh yeah, I had a Wii").

I bought a PS3 this year, second hand, to use as a media centre. I have almost no games for it (around 3 I think?)
and rarely play on it, just use it to watch films and play music.

I'm working my way back actually, owning more NES and SNES games than I ever did way back then, got myself a N64,
a Sega Saturn, all the old school stuff.

The games on these machines are amazing and for me, will always beat the next generation.

PC->Gameboy->PS1->PS2(+a little bit PC)->Xbox 360->Nintendo DS->Wii (well, not much)->PSP (even less so)->PC->most likely PS4 (+a little bit more PC)

been a Playstation Fanboy until they really messed up leading up to the release of the PS3, bought the Xbox 360 (wich was much more attractive in any way except vague technical specs back then) and never regretted it. But now History repeats itself the other way around, and given how much i admire how Sony improved over the last years, i'm "coming home", so to speak.

I recently bought a PC that should be as/more powerful than a console (for the first years, and by then i hopefully only need to update the slightly outdated GTX 660 i have) to play more games on it, but i'm more of a console gamer and will probably play more on the PS4. That said, i do not regret my purchase at all.

You must be new here.

How else is the Escapist PC "Master Race" majority going to contribute, other than to label them as such.

It's one of those quirky Hipster trends around here.

When I was a wee lad(4 years, which is the extent as far back as my memories go), my family had both an NES and some brand of PC.

Here is the full list of what I've had and/or still have. SH = Still Have, DHA = Don't Have Anymore.

NES(SH)
Gameboy-"the grey brick"(SH)
SNES(SH)
SNES-101 The remodel of the original(SH)
2 Gameboy Colors(SH)
N64(SH)
Gameboy Advance(SH)
Gamecube(DHA, gave to a good friend)
Wii(SH, the reason I gave my friend the Gamecube, since my Wii plays the GC games.)
DS Lite(SH)
PSP(SH, Won it by getting second place in the big final top player poker club tourney at my first university)
360(SH)
Retron 3(SH), so I can give my NES and SNES rests, and play Genesis games I've been collecting.
PC(using right now, it is a four year old Dell Inspiron 530, can only the most basic of new games, basically some indies, and MMOs at medium to high graphical look, depending on the MMO.)

Next Gen is a toss up, it depends on what I have the money for, this last gen I started a trend of getting at least two of the competing consoles.

All things considered, I'll most likely get the Wii U first, then in a few years, I'll get the one out of the other two that my friends lean towards, cause they aren't big Nintendo gamers.

The why I got them on the console list, the Nintendo saturation is because in the beginning, all I knew was Nintendo and I grew up with it. Heck, when I went on a family vacation to visit my aunt, uncle and cousins, during the early 90's when I had had a SNES for about a year, one of my cousins said when I asked him if he had video games, "Yeah, I have a Sega Genesis with Sonic and some other games", I said, "What the heck is a Sega Genesis?" Also the equivalent of this video in cute little kid terminology, oh, and with no fake cocaine(flour) on my face:

The 360, I got that a year or so after the Wii, because all my friends were getting 360s.

5: N64
6: Skipped
7: XBox360 & Playstation 3 (because I'm bad at budgeting

Early 80s: Mac II. I still remember all the creepy sounds it made.
Late 80s: Play NES at Kiley's.
Early 90s: Ma bought me a Sega Genesis because I liked the Sonic cartoons.
Late 90s: Play PS1 & N64 at Shanna's. She introduces me to PC gaming.
Early 00s: Interest in gaming wanes. Casual PC gaming only. Almost fails college because of Sims addition.
Late 00s: Discovers RPGs. Heavy amounts of PC gaming diminish social life.
2010s: Playing classic console games on emulators, Facebook games, MMORPGs, has eye on NDS XL, social life strictly online.

N64 (90s kids hoooooooo!)

Ps2, because I wa jealous of my neigbor's ps1, which I constantly used to play spyro.

GameCube, because Nintendo.

Wii because Nintendo.

Xbox 360 because I loved fable 1 and wanted to play the sequel, needless to say I've barely used the thing. Have like 6 games for it.( not my best purchase)

Ps3 because of little big planet, but new releases ensures by ps3 library quickly dwarfed my 360's.

Also I've got a laptop with plenty of steam games.

That's excluding handhelds, which for me is just every Nintendo item since the game boy pocket (EXCEPT the game boy micro, dsi, ds XL, and 3ds XL)

Born onto a Commodore 16 and then upgraded to a Commodore 16 + 4 (God i was spoilt)

Survived on friends Spectrums and C64 until i bought my own Megadrive/Genesis

Also got a Sega CD, 32X, Gameboy and a SNES. I won a Master System 2 with built in Alex Kidd from a Wotsits competition.

Then PlayStation One. I was too poor for Saturn, Jaguar, N64 and Neo-Geo at the time so missed those.

Then it was Dreamcast as they had strong launch games and eventually got a PlayStation 2 when GTA3 came out.

Gamecube, Gameboy SP, and then a DS from Japan before launch in Europe.

Xbox

Xbox 360

Wii but got rid after completing Zelda.

PSP twice and got rid of it twice.

Only just got a PS3 recently to play The Last Of Us. Good buy now as there are a lot of exclusive games that are cheap.

There are so many good games coming out this year and i haven't completed a load i have already so i won't be getting Xbone or PS4 just yet.

NES: Because the other option, which I didn't even know existed, was the Sega Master System. Other than a better version od Double Dragon, Fantasy Zone, Golvelious, and Miracle Warriors I wasn't missing anything.

SNES>Gameboy>Gameboy Color>N64>PS1>Gamecube>PS2>GBA>DS>PS3>Wii>3DS

I don't intend to buy any new consoles in the next year or more. Even then I would never buy anything made by Microsoft, or a Vita. PS4 and Wii U, it could happen.

Assuming a bag of diamonds falls out of the sky and I miraculously get money for a new, working, TV and the rest of the gear needed.

Everything else I have always played on the PC... more strategy games, for one.

I'd probably buy the Wii U at some point, it looks fun.
