if your talking systems you've owned, not just played.. then my list is small. since i've been unable to afford many systems in my life.. all too expensive. my first was a used Atari 7800.. then i got the Playstation... then the N64, then Gamecube and finally the PS3 slim.. ive played most of the other systems that have come out at friends houses, just couldn't afford to buy them. and i only owned 1 system per generation, again, cause of the cost... my next will be the PS4.. when the price drops, or i save up for it, whichever comes first...

reacap : Atari 7800 -> Playstation -> N64 -> Gamecube -> PS3 Slim

1988 - NES - my first console, a christmas present

1991 - Mega Drive/CD - my second console, which I would end up using well into the 5th generation, alongside ...

1994? - PC (Mac PowerPC 603e) - for most of my teens this was my gaming pc, even though it was a Mac and there wasn't a whole lot of games available. the lack of 3d acceleration really hurt it once games like Unreal came along.

1999 - PC (P3 450GHz, RIVA TNT 2) - a decent machine I got for college. Not a full-fledged gaming rig though, so it got outdated pretty quickly.

2003 - PC (P4 3000GHz, Radeon 9800XT) - this was an absolute beast back then it and served me well until the 7th console gen started and it could no longer keep up, leading to me buying a ...

2006 - PS3 - First console since 1991, a 60gb fat model with the juicy full backwards compatibility so I could sample some of the stuff I missed in the last two generations.

2008 - NDS - I wanted a handheld to make those commutes pass by a little faster.

2008 - PSP - I added a second handheld because why not?

2008-12 Gamecube, PS2, Xbox, Dreamcast, N64 & GBA - all systems I got secondhand over the course of the 7th gen so I could play what I missed that my PS3 wouldn't let me.

2012 - Xbox360 - Got it late in the 7th gen for the exclusives.

2013 - Wii - Friend wanted to get rid of it, so I took it off his hands.

2013 - 3DS - I'd grown quite fond of Nintendo handheld by now, so I got this a couple months ago.

2013 - Laptop (i7 3360k, GTX660m) - Meant for work, so gaming was just an added benefit, but it does quite well. It's mostly for indie games anyway, so I don't really need a powerhouse.

Still I fail to see why anyone would have just a gaming PC, sure emulators are a choice, but what about the pleasures of owning a system and games. Plus Emulation isn't a hundred per cent on most systems (with the Sega Saturn being a big one), and you would run into a boatload of problems (especially PS2 and above).

Collecting is one of the most magical things about console gaming, and it just saddens me that some people out there don't even give it the time or day. Plus console gaming is a great way to play old PC games that are not on GOG, and don't work on a modern day OS, or require a lot of fiddling to get working.
Well, maybe they just like PC games? I mean, you could easily say "I fail to see why anyone would just have consoles" because they'd have missed out on PC-exclusive classics like the Infinity Engine Games, the Ultima series, the original Unreal (not Unreal Tournament, that came out on consoles), Jazz Jackrabbit, ************! I mean, there were and are tons of wonderful PC-only games out there.

Also, emulation has come a long way. I almost never touch my real Wii or Gamecube anymore because I can play the same games in HD on my PC. Most PS2 games are fine, too. The Saturn is a bit baffling, though. The original Xbox is in an even worse state, emulator-wise! I want mah HD Otogi, dammit!

Anyway, I have owned (or at least, my family has owned):

Master System (from way before I was born)
Mega Drive (from more or less when I was born)
PS1
Dreamcast
Gamecube
Xbox
PS2
Xbox 360
PS3
Wii
Game Boy Colour
Game Boy Advance
PSP
DS
3DS

And I've always owned a PC . Although, until this generation my PC was always behind the curve a little.

My first console, the GameCube, I got for my sixth birthday. Then I got a GBA SP which I lost in a move, and then (a couple years after) I got a PSP and a DS Lite, which finishes out all the handhelds I owned. Then I got a Wii about four months after its release, an Xbox 360 for Christmas, a PS3 two years later, and a second 360 one year after that (Arcade for $200, since I already had a hard drive), not because I got the three red ring error, but because it wouldn't transmit video anymore. Sometime in between that I bought an N64 during a phase where I was obsessed with The Legend of Zelda (which, you know, isn't necessarily a bad thing to obsess over).

I'm not going to lie, I'm not old enough to work without special papers, and I feel spoiled. Bleh.

At first it was just simple PC games like the Jumpstart games, Tradewinds, and a few small flash games. When I got my GBA in '01 I moved away from most of that. A few years later my brothers and I got a PS2 and we played on that most of the time until we got an Xbox 360 about four or five years ago. I mostly use the 360 these days, though every now and then I jump on the PS2 for a bit. My brother and I do plan on getting a PS3 once the PS4 launches and the price drops.

In order:
Atari 2600
286
Pentium 133 (With MMX!) PC
Pentium 4 (forget its clock) PC
PSOne
Intel Core 2 Q6600 Quadcore PC
DS lite
Playstation 3
PSP
Playstation 2
Intel i5 2500K PC
PS Vita
3DS XL

Everything from the Atari to the PSOne were either a family computer or birthday presents, everything else is mine. I ended up buying a PS2 second hand after playing Disgaea 3 and getting hooked on the series. I ended up getting the first two Disgaeas, Soul Nomad & The World Eaters, Makai Kingdom and Persona 3 & 4.

In chronological order (of course):

(Sega Mega Drive/Genesis)*
Gameboy
PS1
N64
(at this point I owned my first console: Gameboy Colour)
GBA
PS2 (probably my favourite)
Wii
Xbox 360
DS (upgraded to a DS Lite)
PC (although I have played PC games all of my life, from DOOM, to Black and White, to nowadays' games)

Probably going to stick with PC gaming. I'm still very much into handhelds, and will be getting a 3DS XL this week. Monster Hunter, ho!!

*The first controller I held. Did I play the games? Barely. All I remember is that one Sonic game.

What console/computer did you start out with?

What did you choose in successive generations, and why?

What do you have now, and what do you intend to purchase next gen?
It's a much shorter list to just say what I didn't own.

I never got around to buying an Intellivision because I was playing Atari 2600, Pong, and my ColecoVision.

Never got suckered in by a 3DO or a Jaguar.

Could never afford the NEO-GEO consoles, but I still played the hell out of them at arcades.

Never had the original Gameboy.

And I never imported a foreign console (I live in the US) so I missed out on SEGA's SG-1000.

Beyond those exception, pretty much all of them. As far back as there has been consoles to play on, I played on them. And Arcade machines and PCs. Though I never had a TRS-80 or Commodore 64, but my cousins did so I played on their machines from time to time.

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to chime in on "next-gen". The answer, to no one's surprise, I'll be getting both the PS4 and the X1 as well as a WiiU eventually (likely once there is a Kirby game to play).

Windows 7 Computer(Intel 2500K, HD 6870)

Snip

Windows 8 Computer(FM1 Quad Core, HD 7770)
Colour me curious but why would you use a less powerful GPU in a newer machine you bought? Last time I looked a 6870 far outpaces a 7770.

So me...

Lets see, Gameboy colour when I was seven.

PS2 when I was ten.

Okay laptop when I was 16, can't remember the specs, but I played a lot of Rome Total War on it.

PS3 the year after.

Last year built myself a pc, fx4100 quad, HD6670...
Last month upgraded to a HD6850.

Next? Probably will gut the rig with a new board and chip when I think its getting on a bit.

Captcha: we go forwards... yes we do captcha, yes we do.

Keeping Comps out of this one and sticking to consoles and it chronological order

PONG (Although tech my parents), NES, Gameboy, Sega Genesis, Game Gear, Play Station, Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo, X Box, Game Boy Advanced Micro, PSP, Gamecube, XBox 360, Nintendo DSi, Nintendo Wii, 3DS. I played lots of comp games and started in the 286 era and played a lot of PC games until 2002 then Xbox took over due to convenience . I love games and realize i very much need to add a PS2 and 3 to my collection.

Hmm. May be slightly out of order as I forget when things were released.

-Something that played Pong
-NES
-SNES
-Someone lent us a Mac, too, the one with the black screen and green type.
-N64
-PS1
-Gameboy Colour somewhere in there
-Someone lent us a newer mac, one of those giant cube things with the handles on top. I played the hell out of a Hitchiker's Guide MUD-type game where you type the proper answer to continue the story. Whatever ti's called. (This may have been Pre-PS1.)
-Gamecube
-Gameboy Advance
-PS2
-First PC was in late '97, don't think we got internet until '98
-A few more PC's over the years
-I bought a DS about 5 years ago?
-XBox 360 a few years ago
-New computer last year

So, a good amount. Gameboy Advance onwards were with my own money, though my mom, sister and I split the cost of the PS2, and the 360 was my sister's purchase. However, the number of games we have averages out to maybe 2, sometimes 3 games a year, so we don't have many at all. We like to replay things.

The first console I played on was my dad's Turbografx-16 (which is now mine). Then I got an N64, which was mostly my parents' decision because it was the most family friendly of the consoles at the time and I was really young, though I loved it regardless. Then I got a Gamecube because I'm a Nintendo fanboy, though I later got a PS2 because there were a lot of games that generation that I wanted to play that were on it. I got a Wii when it came out for various reasons and a PS3 a year later. I also got a used 360 because there were a few exclusive games that I wanted to play that were on it. I haven't bought a Wii U yet, mostly because none of the games that are already released are appealing to me. I'll get one eventually when LOZ Wii U or Smash Bros. come out for it. And probably a PS4 after that.

Oh, and I recently bought a new laptop and it's doing a decent job of playing current-gen games, if that counts.

Handhelds, I have all of the Nintendo ones (besides rereleases/redesigns) since GBC.
