NiGHTS into Dreams or (not very original, I know) Half-Life.
Half-Life just wins though, as it reminds me of a simpler time. Before buying it, I was able to borrow a friends copy - on the PC! Imagine that! Also, it came in a huge cardboard box, the back of which stated the game would look "mind-bogglingly cool" if you used Open GL.
Half-Life was one game that made a big impression on me.
On a somewhat more negative note, it marks the first internet "debate" I recall getting involved in - that being whether Xen was any good or not. I was of course in the unpopular "Xen is awesome" camp....
