Cage the Elephant, they did the opening song for Borderlands: Ain't No Rest for the Wicked, and their other stuff is good too.
They're not that little known are they?
I thought they had a couple of fairly successful singles and I don't even pay attention to them...

I'm going to say Muse as one of them even tho their mildly popular. I also like Stone Sour and Lost Prophets
In my opinion, not one of those bands are really small...
Lost Prophets have 4 albums don't they? (I think) And i'm pretty sure they've played arenas...
Muse played Wembley and Stone Sour has Slipknots frontman...
Sorry to be so criticizing but I just don't see how any of those are small.

Hrmm, I cannot really think of little bands, but I suppose I can include;

Jakalope. They're, well, I don't know what you'd call them, they're the brainchild of half of Skinny Puppy, so I guess that's all you need to know. I think they're amazing, and one of my all time favorite bands, but I really haven't heard anyone outside of Canada really speak of them, and even here, I get blank stares when I mention them. Here's some videos:

The Inner Banks - it's practically impossible to even find information about them on the internet, let alone someone else who knows about them.

Ever heard of a 90s ska/punk/(kinda) hardcore band called Five Iron Frenzy? I don't blame you, they broke up 6 years ago, but man, they were awesome.
I really enjoyed both the song and the video until it got to the animated band singing/playing, then it was really awful. Good song though.
I have a few. Going along with the ska theme...
Me, Mom and Morgentaler is something I discovered on the internet about half a year ago, and I think it's fucking amazing. Unfortunately, they broke up about ten years ago.
Band of Horses is a really cool, mellow band.
Explosions in the Sky is an all-instrumental band that has one of the most atmospheric, out-of-this-world sounds I've ever heard.
I love the Flaming Lips, but I'm unsure as to whether or not they're considered obscure.
Tell me if I listed bands you haven't heard of so I may accrue WPP(white person points)!
[Please don't, I'm making fun of pretentious hipsters.]

Renard Queenston (AKA Renard, Jackal Queenston, Mayhem, Azrael, Klippa, Furries in a Blender, Kitsune[sup]2[/sup], Adrean, and The Quick Brown Fox)

A true genius of electronic music, he uses a different alias for different genres. He typically puts out a new album every month or so, and he's produced 56 full albums in that last two years. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to be very well known outside of the furry fandom.

He's an amazing producer, and a gamer to boot. He's sampled games in several songs, and has an alias devoted to chiptunes (If you don't plan to listen to these examples, at least listen to Mayhem)

Well, I only like Kasabian.
Seriously, they're awesome.
How are Kasabian small or little known? They're huge in the UK, they've had 3 albums or so now, they've been headline acts at festivals numerous times. I think you've missed the point, or maybe you just underestimate Kasabian's popularity.

Agalloch are great, as are Pelican, brilliant melodic metal bands.

A little less heavy, I Am Arrows, Metric, The Temper Trap are all good too.

Milkman Jr -- my fave song of theirs is "Home". Good guys, who perform live better than the demos they have on their site.
