Ever heard of Neil Gaiman [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NeilGaiman]?

He's a fantasy/horror writer who's been writing young adult novels for some time. He's a really great author and storyteller, and his books are such that you can easily get into them, while at the same time maintaining a kind of poetic quality.

You can't go wrong with most of Neil Gaiman's books. Coraline (Which was made into a kick-ass movie) and The Sandman (Which is a famous comic book series by him) are among some of his best.

There's also Terry Pratchett [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TerryPratchett] if you liked Neil Gaiman's works, but Pratchett's novels are more satirical and less dark, all the while playing with all kinds of tropes and managing to make people laugh while reading a fantasy novel. I'd recommend Small Gods, Feet of Clay, and especially Reaper Man as far as Terry Pratchett's books are concerned. The rest are all just as good, but those three, I think, are some of his best.

Its fanfuckingtastic. Its sequels are a little bit more meh, but this book is amazing. Theres this part where The guy on the cover (Dagnerious) invades the city behind them. *Not really a spoiler because you can tell that that's were the book is heading* Its is beastly.
Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman? Hell yes.
It is an amazing book. I cried at the end

For modern horror novels, go for Dean Koontz, he (in my opinion) is better than Stephen King, he's brilliant. I reccomend 'The Taking' if you also like sci-fi. 'Watchers' is brilliant as well

Well, they are releasing a comicbook, aren't they?
Umm.. maybe. I'm not really sure. I do know of the Resident Evil comics and they are at least decent.

I got into psychology books a few years back and I've taken a like to Viktor Frankl's book Man's Search for Meaning which is sort of like a horror book when he gets into his memoirs of the Nazi death camps.

and it was short.

Hmm... you could read some early Stephen King if you like horror (I recommend The Stand); but one of my favourite books is The Road, by Cormac McCarthy.
Definitely the Road. It's a good book for the imagination. It's not horror per se, but it's definitely dark.

If not Frankenstein is a great read.

If you're a classic horror fan, go right now to and pick up The Dark Descent, the single best compilation of 19th to 20th century short horror you'll ever find.

If you want something more current, really anything by Neil Gaiman. He never disappoints. He's got some choice short story collections as well (I'm a nut for short stories when it comes to genre fiction).

Finally, if you want something else, try anything by Charles Bukowski, Albert Camus, or Samuel Beckett.

Haven't read much since 'The Da Vinci Code' which I loved and the last book before that which was great was 'Immediate Action' by Andy McNab.
I've just realised I really need to read more. Pfft, nothing out there that I fancy so I guess i'll just write one, hehe.

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, or maybe The Shining by Stephen King.

Both excellent choices there.

I'm sidetracking here, but who thinks Valve should start writing books? A bit of portal humour or an epic Half Life series might just be an incredible work, as long as they work out how to transfer some of that incredible game-making effort to carbon-based entertainment.

Do yourself a big favor and pick up William Gibson's Neuromancer trilogy;
you'll thank me later!

But if you're looking for something classical, grab Virgil's The Aeneid.

You definitely should. The sequels (Its a trilogy) aren't as strong, but they're still very good. WoD is probably my favorite book of all time.

As for DragonLance, I read a couple, but it got to confusing so I just gave it up. I might return to it later

Got a ton of non horror recommendations... but:

Stephan King, best horror books I read. I read Lovecraft and E.A. Poe but "It" is the scariest fucking (excuse my french, it's just that scary) book I ever read. I was well above the age where I got scared of books and movies and games when I read it.

And you could say Anne Rice's vampire chronicle are semi horror, if you don't mind a long, sometime boring, read. Skip Interview and only read the Lestat parts (The vampire till body thief).
