What was the first game that did console FPS right?

While I will admit I liked Goldeneye alot, I would claim that Halo did FPS right and was a leap forward (or a step, whichever) for the genre. I do think that Goldeneye did it better first. Another that might come to mind was the first Perfect Dark game, also for the N64. (Not Perfect Dark: Zero, god no.)

Goldeneye. First to make it worth playing- and with all your friends too.

I would say Doom... if there was a decent port for it. But the PC was reigning king for the FPS until awhile ago

goldeneye was good for the TIME, but it honestly doesn't do FPS right, because the controls make it difficult to use cover/ run&gun/strafe, really have to say halo was the first one to do it right i can think of, because IT used the 2 sticks in the 'right' way for FPS.
I think halo is the oldest console FPS you can switch to if used to modern ones, the n64controller was NOT designed for FPS, really.

Ninja'd too quickly, damn.

Though I feel that Halo perfected the console FPS control scheme, yeah it was Goldeneye.

Goldeneye for sure but I would also have to say Perfect Dark because it refined the FPS genre and definitely showed what could be done.

Well I'm saying Metroid Prime. I'm not a big fan of FPSs but I really enjoyed Metroid Prime.
BTW, Halo wasn't a console exclusive and the OP said something about console exclusives.

Best nostalgically doesnt mean the best in general.
While goldeneye was fun, you cant consider it to be the first to do console FPS's right as no current FPS's will use it as a guideline for what makes a good FPS.
I would say Halo CE (which when released was a console exclusive) the gameplay and controls are all done very well and can be played with ease years after its release which can not be said about goldeneye.

I agree :)
Yeah, pretty much agreeing with Miki91's agreement with Furburt on this one.
Nowadays there are better FPS games, but that was the pinnacle of the era.

To everyone hating on Goldeneye for not including dual analog controls, go back and play it again. There are actually at least four control modes that allow you to use two controllers and two analog sticks for play.

Although, now that I try to play again, I must admit that it controls like ass, at least compared to today's console shooters (and of course, every PC shooter with mouse support).

What was it that Yahtzee said? "The PC gaming master race?" And that "Console gaming will always be crippled without the use of a mouse?" Was pretty obvious in Goldeneye.

Goldeneye definitely deserves the many mentions for being the first console FPS that "got it right", but Halo definitely "got it better" :)p) because of it's tight control scheme (thats been copied by nearly ever other console FPS since) and multiplayer. Like it or hate it, Halo got it right for console FPS's.
