While I will admit I liked Goldeneye alot, I would claim that Halo did FPS right and was a leap forward (or a step, whichever) for the genre. I do think that Goldeneye did it better first. Another that might come to mind was the first Perfect Dark game, also for the N64. (Not Perfect Dark: Zero, god no.)
Bingo! It took 41 posts to get the correct answer. No, I'm not dissing Goldeneye because I agree that it was awesome, but I played both briefly last year, and Perfect Dark was leagues ahead of Goldeneye in both single player and multiplayer. It had WAY better frame rates, and allowed the addition of bots. So if Goldeneye is truly the first FPS to do it "right" then Perfect Dark instantly perfected it.

Hell, even before there were Halo fanboys to piss me off to the series, I was saying to my friends that "Halo looked just like Perfect Dark." To which they replied "No, Halo has better graphics, better guns, more multiplayer depth... Oh wait, this is sounding just like Perfect Dark."

while i do agree that goldeneye was the first console exclusive (not doom) to "do it right" it does seem horrible to control now that we are all used to dual analog sticks doesnt it?
Yes, and that's why I'm going with Halo... or timesplitters, whichever came first. too lazy to look it up.

The first true modern FPS, or at least the first one I can think of, was Halo, a game that many people love to hate because of it's popularity, but a game that was so revolutionary at the time of it's release that people would buy xboxes (is that the plural of xbox?) simply to play it.

There is no doubt that its Goldeneye and it came years before Halo was even imagined.

duck hunt, its a real FPS
I was gonna say Halo, but then I read this post. Duck Hunt was the first FPS wasn't it?
It was, but it was also bloody awful...

OT:

I am ashamed to admit I never played Goldeneye. I just wasn't into shooters when it came out.

I think Goldeneye was great, but I don't necessarily think it did FPS "right". It was still a far cry from PC shooters of the time. Halo was the first game that really nailed the PC feel on a console I think.

Not sure what it was called. but I think it was on PS1.
It was some sort of Star Wars game. I think it was called Dark Force or something.
Pretty much a doom clone as far as I can remember. I was like 8.

First FPS I played and I was hooked from that day on.

Not sure if it's a console exclusive though.

I would say perfect dark. Though the sniper rifle that could see and shoot through walls was almost deathmatch breaking when someone picked it up (it might have been called the farseer)
