German for the strict rules, making it pretty easy to learn.

Or Swedish to hear people from all over the world try to make the "sj"-sound. It is usually pretty funny.

I think we should all speak a programming language like C#. Sure it would be dysfunctional but we could tackle the problem of computational illiteracy. As an extra our conversations would be very efficient.

English of course! And my native language is Spanish, but I agree that English is easier.

of alive languages, I'd say English/Spanish is the most universal, so one of those two. Including dead languages, I'd say Latin. Europe was and still is a center of power in the world, and understanding Latin allows you to understand all of the Romance languages.

I should probably give the East credit, because over 2 billion people live in India and China, but the Chinese character system is difficult to learn, so for simplicity's sake, I'm sticking with languages that consist of words made up of a set number of characters.

I'm going to jump the bandwagon and say Latin. I already know it and it'll only be fair to use a dead language. I think Latin also sounds the best.

I gotta say, i think Binary. That way, everyone wins
Plus bender was able to travel back in time using a binary code tattoo'd on Fry's ass. Binary for the win!

Just a thought, but if there were a universal language, wouldn't that just create multiple dialects around the world? Just compare the differences between American English and UK English, or Spain Spanish and Latin American Spanish. It would be that only amplified due to the large amount of countries speaking the language.

On a lighter note, children would just have to take dialect classes instead of foreign language classes.

Spanish or English.
Only chinese is a more spoken language than these two to begin with but that does no take into account all the different slangs of that language (people from south China does not understand a person speaking Chinese in the North, or so I've heard) so I'd pick either of the two most spoken languages in the world.

Edit:
Or then I would just go with Finish to fuck with peoples' minds...
There is no spoken Chinese language instead it is Mandarin or Cantonese (those are the main 2) and that is why the north and south wouldn't understand each other Mandarin is the most spoken on the 2 with almost double the amount of people over English. English would be the most widely spoken but Mandarin has more people speaking it.
I knew that...
Well not in detail like you but I had read about it somewere.
Thanks for a clarificication, I got just a bit smarter again!

No problem it isn't necessarily common knowledge depending on where you are from anyways.

Maybe German? Just anything other than english just because of how many rules there are in the written, it's batshit crazy.
As someone who knows both, I would say that English and German are about equal in terms of grammar. English has all of the small details, but German has noun genders and the dative case. The dative case is the most fucking useless abomination in spoken language.

I would have to go with Elvish, Dragon Rider or English.

Because the first two sound awesome and the last one is the easiest to learn...since I already know it. :D

Having taken latin for four years, I can honestly say it's the hardest fucking subject I've ever had to do...the fact that people on this forum want it to be the official language of earth is very disconcerting for me, especially because no other western language can really match it's complexity...so please I'm asking you to really re-think what you want in case this discussion ever makes headway.

O TEMPORA O MORES!

OT: I really really hope English becomes earth's official language.
