What's so great about Skyrim?

Have you seen skyrim dragons? They're just flying reptiles.
Thank you for that strip. I laughed for a good 30 seconds.

OT: Skyrim is awesome for all the reasons listed, mainly the fact that you can cuss at things so hard that it has a destructive force.

Somehow, though OP...i don't think that's what you're after. So here's my contribution to your thread's post count. Enjoy it.

It baffles me too, I hated Oblivion and I hate most RPGs in general. That doesn't mean people can't get excited about these things, and it definitely doesn't mean the games are bad. Skyrim certainly does look well-made.

Certain things appeal to certain breeds of audience. Some people really like fantasy dragon adventures. I'm really hyped for Serious Sam 3, but I doubt many Bethesda fans will see the logic in that, either.

A TES game gets the hype because Bethesda owning a proven long running franchise with name recognition is in a position to create the most polished open world RPG's on the market.

Other games in this genre has been made by other developers, but large open ended RPG's are probably the hardest and most expensive types of games (not counting MMO's) to put out a high quality release for. So what you get are games like Two Worlds or Gothic 3 that come out as bug ridden messes, not because the developers don't care but because they don't have the same time and money to work out all the glitches that a proven developer like Bethesda does. Which of course leads to much lower sales... it's a vicious circle really.

Anyways, like I said people get excited as even though there are flaws they know they're guaranteed a quality experience from a Bethesda launch.

Thankyou, this is the first description I've seen of why skyrim might actually be worth a look. It's also the first I've seen that doesn't insult the asker for not knowing everything about TES and knowing that skyrim is clearly the best game ever just because.
No problem! I?m glad I could help. I know that the Elder Scrolls are bit different mechanically from other RPG?s and that the shear amount of unstructured content throws people off the games. They don?t really have a good tutorial either which kind of makes getting into them that much harder. I can understand why you never got into them; my friends on this side of the screen didn?t either. They just apologetically gave me back the disk and told me they didn?t really have any fun. I was sad. But no, that?s alright it not everyone?s cup of tea. I often think of it as a better version of the Fable series. It?s funny because I pretty much was hooked on TES for the whole character customization thing and used it like a giant dress up simulator. I was happier finding a new piece of clothes then levelling up (new Robe? Yes please!). I AM hoping that Skyrim turns out to be the best game ever though, but that?s because i already pre-ordered it in the summer :) . The only hitch in the plan is that Bethesda made the outfits pre-made like in fallout 3, so I might find myself going back to Saint?s Row 2 until I can afforded Saint?s Row the Third.

Read up on the subject, numbersix. I think there's enough material out there to convince you or, depending on the case, to fail in doing so.

Failing that?

People want Skyrim, because Elder Scrolls games are consistently the best fantasy RPGs around in the eyes of many, and provide the best depth and immersion available. Skyrim looks like it's going to be the best Elder Scrolls game yet. (Except maybe Morrowind, depending on who you ask)

Me? As a huge Elder Scrolls fanboy, I think it's gonna be the best game ever.
Things this guy got right, everything. 'Cept the part where dragons make you crap you pants. See "Where were you when the Dragon Broke?"

To start: There are a million threads on this subject. Read one of them.
Now, to actually answer: It's a decade running series that has released above average games, including at least one that has a nearly legendary status among RPG gamers. Just from that, you'd figure that people would be excited about it, no? Also: people love dragons and the concept of shouting something along the lines of "FUCK YOU!" in a dragon language and it making the dragon get hit by lightning (or what ever the effect is) is just plain badass. On top of that, people just think it looks really damn cool. Not to mention the fact that the Elder Scrolls have one hell of a dedicated modding community that creates some of the best mods for a game I've seen around, turning an already good game into something absolutely awesome.

It's not necessary to have played Oblivion, but it has to be really cheap by now. I would suggest getting it. Assuming you game on PC, wait until Skyrim releases, Oblivion might be on sale or something. That's what I'm doing, because I never played Oblivion on PC, only on Xbox.

I put over 200 hours into Oblivion.
Over 100 in Fallout 3 / New Vegas

Bethesda know how to make a game last.

Actually, I'm not trolling or trying to start a fanboy war. I just really would like to know what everyone is so excited about. I mean, I never played Oblivion. Is it necessary to have done so to understand why Skyrim's gonna be 'TEH BEST GAME EVAR' according to hundreds of forum posts? I played Fallout 3 / New Vegas, and from what I understand, they're quite similar to Oblivion. And Fallout 3 was awesome, but I don't know if I'd lose my mind about it like everyone seems to be doing with Skyrim. The only news I can find on it is 'HO MAN ONLY X AMOUNT OF TIME BEFORE RELEASE I CAN'T WAIT' so I'm asking the community at large. Why's is Skyrim such a big deal, and why should I buy it?
it's elder scrolls and people love elder scrolls not saying you have to buy it but that's why it's a triple A rpg like mass effect people were saying it about previous games and skyrim is no different

Harsh reality time.
Just because a game is long and has a lot to do doesn't make it memorable. Memorable means that you get new experiences from it, from the looks of it there will be 100+ dungeons and they will all look the same.
The trailer was boring. Pretty landscapes and people walking is not exciting, Yelling at dragons is not that cool. Know what is cool in a trailer? Fighting a finger the size of Texas!
<youtube=-f3woBOc8pY>
I would not complain about that if people didn't delude themselves into thinking the teaser was a cinematic masterpiece
Given Bethesda's previous record, the game will be very glitchy, prone to crashes, and full of terrible AI and will only be fixed after patches
I understand you are excited and this will be a good game. But there is no way in Hell it will be "The Best Game EVAR!"
Those are my two cents. Please stop hyping this game up, you are not helping the cause and are just creating more people that hate the game.
Not trying to anger anyone. I am not a troll. I just want people to not create Hype Backlash, it's never a good thing.
And for everyone talking about dragons.
Play Monster Hunter.

What was the last open-world fantasy rpg, that didn't come from japan or sucked?
Just Cause 2, The Fallout series, Assassins Creed 2 and Brotherhood, Batman: AC Dragon Age, Red Dead Redemption.

I can name A LOT more.

OT: Never been a HUGE fan of the Elder Scroll games (Morrowind made me feel sick while playing it, No idea why. Oblivion, once i got out of the Prison was just blergh. Grass here, Grass there, HUGE spire in the middle of the map, and a random Wolf/crab every now and again.) However Skyrim looks totally kick ass!

Hell i get to learn powers...FROM A MOTHERFUCKING DRAGON! I literally shout at a Dragon and i can cause a lightning storm...WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE FROM THAT?!?!?!

Well aren't you a field of daisy's and buttercups?

Bethesda have even said that the AI has received an upgrade and from the looks of the world and how the character moves on the world, no long will we be, which i like to call "float walking"

Your being just as bad as the people who are hyped for the game, they are saying why it will be good, and you are saying why it will be bad. If they bother you so much don't come on Skyrim threads? Sheesh.

It's ok, I don't understand it either. Loads of people treat Oblivion (and thus Skyrim) like the coming of Christ and I personally got bored of it real fast. I loved Fallout 3 and even Morrowind so I had high hopes when I got Oblivion, and now, I'm just like meh to the Skyrim hype.

I think it has lots to do with the modding commitee and people who play these games with mods. Every Oblivion fanboy I've listened to crap on about the game has talked about the mods. If it relies on mods to be good, doesn't make it a good game imo.
