I cover the entire scale depending on the day. Sometimes it's a nice wistful acoustic guitar song with thoughtul lyrics and sometimes I want my music to feel like it is physically assaulting me. For the record, I predominately enjoy mid-level stuff; I like distortion and agression but I also like melody and understandable lyrics. But sometimes, 11 isn't even enough. I want songs that just sound like machine gun fire and satan himself screeching at me with all the vitriol of Hell.

All the way, man.

Project Hate MCMXCIX, Naglfar, 1349, Bathory, Carpathian Forest....etc. Everything on the lower ranks of the scale too.

On that scale, I listen to 7-9. Never could get myself into black metal, but death metal songs are good sometimes.

Sometimes I feel like a p**** because I listen to A Day to Remember a lot, but I make up for it by listening to Chimaira, Slayer, and Anthrax.

NWOBHM and early thrash are about as heavy as I ever get. But I find myself listening to less metal these days, if anything I listen to Alt Rock and Prog Rock 90% of the time now. I used to love death metal, but screaming/only playing chromatic riffs is for talentless hacks.

I've been on a rush of electronicy metal recently. Specifically Blood Stain Child (mainly their newest album), Sybreed, Neurotech, Vigilante, etc.
You haven't lived until you've heared BSC's album Epsilon. If you like that sort of metal, anyway.
But I'm not going to chip in on the 'how metal are you'. Shhh.

Grunge is not Metal! :O It's like saying Punk and Grunge are the same thing! =P And all I listen to is Nu-Metal which is different from Metal itself. XP
I am disappoint Sacman...
Well some people consider Grunge a form of Metal... most early grunge albums were dismissed as Metal in their day... and besides we all know that Grunge was heavily inspired by Punk, they're not the same but a lot of the core ideas are based off of punk... and both grunge and punk help set the basis for the stoner and sludgemetal of today... specifically Dinosaur Jr, The Melvins and Flipper...<.<

Also I am not particularly fond of Korn... to say the least...<.<

Yet you can listen to Flipper? Your an odd person. xP
Well they're very different bands...
I mean tonally, musically and dynamically they're almost completely different... and at least Flipper had some ideas to express through their music... and weren't out of touch with society in a lot of ways...<.<

Besides Nu-Metal is too clean for me...

Heh, whatever you say Sac.
I'll leave you to your 'in touch with society' sludge. xP
Heh just sayin... Besides I listen to sludge because of how crap it sounds... but in a good way...<.<

Aha... I'm just gonna say what I said a little while before. Your an odd person. x3
What? I find sincerity in the low production values and experimental nature of a lot of it... I mean my favorite band evar is Dinosaur Jr... and well just listen to them...

Their recording is distorted beyond belief and sounds like it was put through a used coffee filter before it was stuck on a low quality cassette... but that's what I like about it... beyond their unique understanding of musical dynamics, they're just so personal in what they make... It's obvious in all of their music that it wasn't made for an audience, nor was it an ego trip for the band... it's music at it's most basic level... pretty sounds made to express an emotion... just endearing in that sense...<.<

Even ridiculously experimental I find to be at least interesting... I mean as an attempt to experiment and expand the idea of music it's certainly admirable... to say the least...

Bleh now it's late and I'm rambling... XP

at least this time it was vaguely coherent...

Whenever I've categorized a piece of music as "heavy", I usually refer to how crushing the tone is. Example:

As for the list linked in the OP, I do reach "the 11th level", but I'm still very selective. Anaal Nathrakh are fucking awesome, but Torsofuck and a few others are terrible beyond redemption.

Lamb of God seems like it would be about a 9 on that scale, and that's the only deathmetal I've ever really cared for. I'd place the majority of what I listen to would be between a 6 and an 8.
