Play Operation Flashpoint on hardcore difficulty....or any difficulty. Ya know, just play the game. There are N64 games with better AI.

That game was just too realistic for me. I found it a frustrating drag.

I thought I was hardcore until I played that game.

Though I did just finish ME2 on Insanity. Woop!
Actually, compared to ArmA II, Operation Flashpoint is practically Pac-Man in terms of realism.

ArmA II is probably the closest you'll get to actual combat without being there.
You took the words right out of my mouth. I am on my second play-through (on Expert of course), and I am on 'Manhattan.' Yeah... It's pretty damn realistic.

Although I have to admit... It's a TON of fun, so I wouldn't call it too realistic.

I wouldn't even compare Dragon Rising to Pac-Man, that would be doing it too much justice. I would say Pong if nothing else.
Most of OFP2s fail was in the AI, or lack there of. Have not played ArmA2 though.

When it hurts. And when Mario can no longer jump due to arthritis. Then it sucks.

There there, Pac-Man is fairly realistic once you can get past the dated graphics... Ever been to a Rave?

Whilst I wanted to like ARMAII, I thought the controls where way to clunky to get accustomed to, and there was a certain "lag" when you input commands and your character moved. I also found that the lack of any decent tutorial made it very difficult understanding what was going on.

I think the lag is probably due to the fact your computer is struggling with it. Don't feel bad though, ArmA II is ridiculously unoptimized, so it runs bad on computers that can run crysis fine. As for the decent tutorial, that's kind of a hallmark of European games from places other than France and Germany. Don't ask me why, but they all seem to have rubbish tutorials and bad optimization, but really great gameplay and great modability (STALKER, ArmA, Europa Universalis).
Well, wasn't really lag in the technological sense, the game ran fine, it was just that the character felt sluggish and didn't quite respond to my commands the way I wanted. A bit like in certain 3rd person games (Splinter Cell or Hitman for example), which works with 3rd person games, but gets odd with 1st person ones.

A good example for something that's almost too real is GTA San Andreas and GTA4

You had to feed your character, go on dates, take your fat cousin around or he'd get all pissy and the vehicles drive like dick.
I seriously couldn't agree more. It's like Rockstar games ran out of ideas for both fun and colour. When I got GTA San Andreas I couldn't put it down because of the huge amount of options to dick around and I didn't get completelty bored of it until about Saints Row came out which showed how much GTAIV was missing. When I picked that up after about half an hour of boring missions and testing out your characters mortality with oncomming cars I just had to put it down.

Great graphics and extreme realism will always be inferior to kick ass features and awesome gameplay.
Yeah I gotta agree, I mean I got GTA4 and, while you can look at it and think its really clever and technically an amazing accomplishment. It is just so dreary and is so far removed from the mindless escapism of previous entries in the series. Pumping for gas? Watching TV IN A GAME? Are you serious?

Saints Row 2 was so much better for me as it still had enough realism that you were packing a punch when doing drivebys.....but was awesome because those drivebys were with RPGs.

There is a reason why we play games or a usual reason. The thing so realistic aka real life is not that exciting.

When the attempt at realism gets in the way of fun and enjoyment.

Also, realism is not equal to gunmetal grey and coffee brown.

But by that argument you imply that there is absolutely nothing in real life that is exciting, and that has been proven false.

I would highly recommend you give ArmA II a try if you like realistic war games. With the latest patch (that adds a great mini-campaign) it runs fairly smoothly, is tons of fun to play!

In the far gone year of 1999, I bought "Apollo 18", a space mission simulator.

This is, by far, the most "realistic" experience in gaming I've ever had the misfortune of encountering. The game came with a manual that was hundreds of pages long, and you had to study the manual and take an in-game written exam before you were allowed to enter a bloody SIMULATION of your future simulated space flight.

If you ever managed to pass all of that, the "game" itself was staring at a few buttons and dials and pressing some button at a specified time. Oh, and math. Lots and lots of math.

Damn, ninja'd.

But really, I think that Fallout: New Vegas' 'Hardcore Mode' is a little too realistic sounding. Ammo has weight? Surely that's pushing it? I want to try it out though.
Don't forget you can die of thirst, and I'm pretty sure you have to sleep at night as well.
