I have to say, I'm quite disturbed by what a work mate told me today. A small riot errupted in her street late last night after her neighbour told some kids across the street to keep the noise down. After they didn't he stupidly chased them away holding a pole in his hands causing the kids to run off, but instead of just going home and telling their parents these kids ripped out fence palings and letter boxes and started throwing them in retaliation. The neighbour copped head injuries and his girlfriend, who only came out to drag her partner back inside the house is getting her arm x-rayed, worried that she might have a fractures to her arm (she was in the house when this broke out.)

We are all well aware of who's fault it was that this started but it goes too far when police are called, only to say that they can't do anything about it because they are minors. These minors were also drinking and were from the age of 13. I'm sorry but minors or not, these kids should have been placed in the back of a paddy wagon and locked up until their parents picked them up. These kids are also known to break into homes and set things alight as an act of revenge.

What do you think should be done to prevent these occurances from happening again? (Aside from NOT chasing drunk minors with poles.) And also general thoughts and opinions.

Well as with most issues involving kids, the parents should be involved with any punishment or prevention. If they can't stop their kids from forming a drunken mob then there is something very wrong here.

they should be punished and their parents should be punished (parents financially and children should be dragged to military school for 2 years)
that will teach them and if it doesn't atleast they are of the streets for a while because that's where they will probably be the rest of their life

am I to harsh?

Heh. I gotta say I am siding with the kids in this one. The other guy threatened them with a weapon so got his ass kicked as he deserved. Thats hilarious.
Anyway on topic, the guy should just have called the cops right away. Noise complaints would have brought the cops there then once they saw the kids were drinking they would have had to do something about it. I say lock them up for the night for being drunk and disorderly.
I think the neighbour too was drunk...Aussie drunks don't think too well on the piss. The only other problem I find with this, is that the kids are Aboriginal and use this as a basis to say "Ha, we will get away with this because if we don't we will play the race card." Yes, the neighbour was a dickhead, but these kids did not stop even for passing cars/motorbikes and even threatened to kill him and his girlfriend. They also pulled out fence palings that did not belong to them. Honestly, I don't feel sorry for the person who instigated this, but innocent people became victims.

It's stupid that they get a slap on the wrist just because they're minors, they should get the punishment any adult would have received.

Nope if anything your too light, i have nothing but hatred for theses kids (not all kids just kids like these), i know im sounding like an old man here but latly most kids have been lacking respect in authoritive figures and doing things with reckless abandon, i mean drinking? at age 13? my dad would of beaten me senceless and locked me away for months if i did shit like that

i read a BBC article once about snow ball fighting through the ages, kids have become more agressive and basterdised (not a word i know)if only i could find the article anyway

The police have been weakened by having to maintain a Political Correct mind set.
While abuse of power is just wrong in a situation like this throwing the kids in the paddy wagon and putting in a cell for the night sounds good to me.
Back in the day the sergeant on duty would have tanned their hides as well.

As my attitude from several posts likened to this one suggests i am definatley coming to the conclusion of "shoot em all and let god sort em out".
I have no faith in the generations to come. Kids i feel drawn too, for the sake of our future are definatley in the minority.
To often of late kids like this have been glorified by the media, particularly here in Australia. Where this kid "Corey" advertised his party on myspace or some dumb ass move like this and unsurprisingly his party was crashed by all and sundry. Needless to say he tried to pass himself off as the innocent victim and wasnt responsible for the damage to the ENTIRE street, let alone his parents place ( who had gone away ). Now i ask, what kind of dumb ass puts a party on the internet ? And how do they punish him ? they put him on Big Brother is how.. Now granted it was a shitty show, but still, put him even more in the publics eye.. Yeah that'll learn him !

Constructive opinion: Sorry about the rant, but this kind of thing just gets my blood boiling. Public pride is at all time low, kids dont identify with the communties around them. Maybe some sort of outreach program ? But then it tends to only be the "good" kids that volunteer for these things anyway.

Sigh.. I just dont know anymore.. Kids are broken and I for one cant fix them in any rational way. For me Physical disipline is key. Make them attend a military type boot camp every 6 months. But then that just will program them to feel inferior ( a drill sergeant hacking on you doesnt make you feel the best ), so i would be sued there, or called out by some pansy organisation for the whimpifying of the generations.

Kids are much like dogs in my eye. And i quote Caesar Milan. "exercise, discipline, affection" in that order. In other words run them around until they are to tired to argue and kick up a fuss / have a huge raging party.

Think of me what you will. These are my opinions. A train of thought as i typed.

I don't think it would be too harsh to charge their parents with neglect as well as slapping them with a grievous bodily harm charge on behalf of their children. And since I don't think foster care would work on these children they should be thrown into a military school simply so they understand the meaning behind discipline and respect for authority.

This is a very delicate issue. America has similar problems, especially with "playing the race card". It sucks, really. Society has changed to the point that I have to extra, extra careful about the things I say (things which would have been okay to say ten years ago).

But hey, kids will be kids. Most of the time, they'll turn their life completely around once they realize they'll die soon if they don't. I know police officers who used to roll with gangs, and dropouts who eventually got their life together. One of my friends was thrown in jail for a couple of months for assault with a deadly weapon. Once he got out, he converted to Christianity (whoa...), finished his college education, and became a Paramedic. So perhaps all these kids need is not a baseball bat to the kneecaps, but a chance. You'd be surprised.

Anyway, a neighborhood disturbance is nothing a good ol' bang from a rifle can't disperse. It'll scare the shit out of them, and they'll bolt like rabbits, leaving a trail of urine behind them. And if they start tearing up your property, you have a right to fire on them (but don't do it, it wouldn't be the best thing to do). The key thing is to make them think twice about their habits so they'll begin to wonder if that kind of behavior is worth it.

People like that get stabbed in my neighbourhood. Seriously.

From a long list of incidents, the latest was a member of the Rebels motorcycle gang (our version of the hells angels in practice) was shot two streets over from me. Australia doesn't have a lot of gun violence due to control, so generally its knifings and beatings. This was big news because he (he being 'Rebel Rick') was the leader of the WA chapter.

Several rapes in the last year, two guys getting done for attempted murder and regular muggings by addicts have all occured within a couple of kilometres.

Like I said though, these kids will break into your house and set it alight in an act of revenge. They would probably also steal your rifle to use in their next retaliation if some other stupid idiot decided to chase them with a pole.

Hm...you're right. In that case, perhaps we can carpet-bomb the Projects?--I mean, um...er...

Okay, let's think about this seriously...
Well, I think your house is pretty much safe from being destroyed. Remember, these are 13 year olds we're talking about. They are just kids trying to be "thugs" and "gangstas". They are L-A-Z-Y. Kids seriously don't know shit about the world. Not even arson. Today's kids might be more aggressive like you said earlier, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a 13 year old who knows his fuckin' times tables by heart these days.

And besides, if any kind of thug breaks into your house, steals your stuff or whatever, just know that as soon as he gets caught by the police, there will be that many more convictions in a courtroom. Then you can watch as the poor son of a ***** has his government subsidized housing and free monthly paycheck taken away from him. BAM. Your temporary suffering has led to one less un-deserving mouth on the welfare.

Failure? No. SUCCESS.

These particular kids have been known to break in and set things on fire, because it isn't just 13 yr olds, there are just some as young as 13.

EDIT: Police have done nothing so far.

Alright, alright. That means we'll just have to take matters into our own hands then, wouldn't we? The police won't mind if you add some unnecessary ventilation to thugs that are technically being hostile on private property, would they? Even if they ARE Aboriginal.

And yes, there WILL be a problem if the thugs break in when you're not home. That's why I'm encouraging as many people as I can to get a CCW so that they have their gun with them at all times, and there's no chance of having it stolen unless they intentionally leave it at home (ruining the point of a CCW, anyway). And if all you have is a rifle or are not old enough to get a CCW, you should hide your gun in a book or something.

And the police? I don't know how things are done in Australia, bro. But in the States, once you call the police with an issue like this, they will arrive. Of course the pizza will always arrive sooner than they will, but they'll arrive just the same. If you're lucky, the police will be able to have the time to do laps around your neighborhood for a night or two so that you'll feel safe.

As for these kids, I would try to stay on my toes...and not feel bad if I'm forced to crack some minors in the head. I'm all for letting kids have another shot at life, but if someone is threatening you, it's either them or you, and the choice is clear.

Well, the funny thing is that the police actually told my work mate to do some street justice if they returned, even though it's their job. My work mate just wouldn't feel safe trying to do her own "street justice" given just how reckless these kids really are. Besides, if all you do is react the way the kids do, then of course it's only going to escalate to into more, possible worse problems.

The police did arrive straight away, but claimed that because they are minors they can't do anything. I call bullshit on that, because if minors can be arrested for drinking on council property (which they were also doing) then they can through the little bastards into a paddy wagon and cart them off to lock up until their parents claim them. This is, assuming their parents care. I know that not all police are bad (I work with a few in the shopping centre I work at) but these officers just didn't seem to care.

The parents of the kids should be fined - heavily, and those fines paid to the person who was assaulted. If the parents want to recoup their losses by having their kids work then that would be a lesson for the kids. If they don't then it will be a lesson for the parents.
