When was the last time you couldn't finish a game cause it was too difficult?

I quit two games around the same time: Catherine and Alien: Isolation. The former was pretty hard, but the main reason I quit these games was less to do with the game difficulty, and more to do with the mental difficulty. These two games made me so stressed! The constant diligence and time sensitivity they require was driving me nuts, especially as I tend to like taking my time in games.

Oh, and I've never finished the last ten minutes of Far Cry 1 because of an absurd difficulty spike in a volcano crater. I've never been able to figure out whether the big bastards with rocket shooting hands are best shot in the head or in the big green light on their chest.

Aaru's Awakening

I played through the entire game in one night with a friend, but then we reached the penultimate level of the game and there's this one jump that we just didn't get. And it being just a crappy looking indie game, I never looked back, chalking it up to indie level bad game design.

The particular bit is from 0:03 to 0:08, although it looks easy in this video, it's harder to pull off when you're actually playing it.

A couple of indie games last year had me giving up in frustration. One was Deadbolt. A game kind of like Hotline Miami but a from a side view rather than top down. Unfortunately I don't remember the details because it was a while ago but I just hit a wall and was unable to progress. Maybe I'll give it another go one of these days.

The other was Pharaonic. A sidescrolling action game with Dark Soulsesque combat. It was challenging but fun and the difficulty curve was well paced. Until one of the final areas where there was a big difficulty spike. It wasn't a rage quit though, more of a "This game isn't fun any more so I'm going to do something else".

Devil May Cry 3. I got to this one boss where you fight these 2 knights who then combine into one knight (Or maybe it was the other way around). I got to a point where I was consistently getting very close to beating them, but couldn't quite pull it off. I won't say I gave up on it, I just took a break for 5 or 6 years. Someday I'll go back and beat it. But not this day.

The fire and wind guys in chapter 5? Cleared Agni and Rudra without too much trouble. It was actually the final boss that I failed to overcome in the end. Must have tried a few dozen times to beat him, but...

Affordable space adventures, the extra mission has one section that doesn't really have a strategy you can perform as you try and pull planks of wood through some threatening "lasers" that is super finicky as you try and barge physics objects. Then I got to the final stretch one time and its a section of rushing with full speed before you overheat from your settings, I missed it by a fraction of a second and gt tired of the game asking for rapid and high speed tweaking when I constantly look down at the gamepad (Wii U game btw) to knock things up and down.

Haven't happened yet, even though sometimes it takes way over a dozen tries.

I'm the sort who will keep banging my head against a brick wall until the wall collapses. Sometimes I'm even too stubborn to try changing tactics and will keep at it till I get lucky or I'll grind until my stupid tactic is offset with how over-leveled I am. Other times I will try new tactics just for that one fight, I once got stuck on a boss in Dark Souls and so went away and made a weapon specifically designed to take on that one boss, it made the boss trivial and then I never used the weapon again as it wasn't my normal style. It took me about a month in real life to get out of the first game month in Long War, but eventually I managed by constantly looking for new ways to work within the game.

I may take a brake from a game, but I value challenge in a game and will never let it go unbeaten just because it was hard[footnote]I mostly let games go unbeaten because I get distracted by something else, either in real life or another game[/footnote] and I always advise my friends not to give up on a game or turn the difficulty down just because its hard.

Super Hexagon kicked my ass with my laggy, almost a decade old keyboard.

Gonna drop mad cash to buy a Razer Chroma to finish an indie game!

I usually don't give up because of difficulty, as I usually manage to beat it after a few tries. Sometimes I just end up save scumming my way through, but that still counts as beating right?

But every now and then some bullshit game comes along with some cancer mission, and I have to say "You know what? I can't do this, this is just stupid."

Last time this was Nexus: The Jupiter Incident, and the mission "Raptor Raid".
In the mission you are pulled out of hyperspace and have to defend the convoy you are with for 10 minutes. No matter what I did, how many times I tried, save scummed or followed tutorials/walktrhoughs I just could not do it. Every single time one of the ships died and it was game over.

It sucks, because I kinda started to like that game, but they just HAD to put an insane escort type mission in there.. With bad AI and limited options in terms of things you can actually do, it just ends up being frustrating as hell.

there is always the single answer for me. a game i keep coming back to learn but bounce off like its concrete
war in the pacific admirals edition

picture being able to fight the entire pacific war from start to finish down to the scale of individual ships and infantry squads with all the detail you can possibly have.

ive always said that if you can learn to play and win that game you could of won the real thing

my other other answer would be DCS.. stupidly complicated game

Braid.

Got stuck on a puzzle. Something to do with a time-slowing ring and a falling ladder.

My internet was down long term at the time so I couldn't just google the answer.

Never did figure it out and by the time I got internet back a few weeks later I had long since lost interest.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, the final boss.

There's one tiny section on his back that you need to jump on, and in the final phase of the fight he just moves too damn fast for me to time it right. And it had nothing to do with perseverance or getting good, I got as good as I could get, it was just not within my capabilities to beat this guy. It was the first time in my long years of gaming that I was hit by the fact that age had slowed me down.
Surprisingly, Lord Fredrick only took me about two tries. But that said, if you though the final boss was bad, wait until you get to DKC: Returns. If you haven't already. I gave up at the half way point, because the developers thought it was a good idea to start filling levels with mine cart section. Mine cart levels and forced motion controls do not mix. Thank God, Tropical freeze fixed this.

Jasper Batt Jr. on Bitter Mode. Infinite teleport spam that can knock in to a stun loop or sock you out the window. One of the worse final bosses ever. Suda and Grashopper can go fuck themselves on that one.

Agni and Rudra. Were you playing vanilla DMC3 or the Special Edition. Either way, they're known for being gate stoppers. Here's a hint, try to get both of their health low enough. That way, you won't have to worry about the other taking his other weapon. All it takes is some practice, and memorizing the patterns. Don't rush; believe me on that one.

Vergil is actually not to bad on Normal or Hard (Sepcial Edition/Japanese Original Release), but on Very Hard or Dante Must Die, may Sparda have mercy on your soul. I'm surprised I was able to beat the hardest difficulty as Dante and Vergil.

Yahtzee's 1213, some years back.

Though, helps that Spiderweb games come with editors.

Oh, maybe Final Liberation, though I've finished twice on the easy mode.

(Also, Black Closet. Took my ages to get through that)

Dark Souls humiliated me in ways I hadn't imagined possible since the proliferation of walkthroughs and save files.

Not on some major 'yeah, it's supposed to be difficult' part either, but the first freaking boss. The problem, I think, is that I will never get used to how 'heavy' the character controls, having gotten too used to being speedy action game protagonists like Sora, Ryu or Dante who can dodge around like lightning. The high 'stagger' time makes it difficult to get out of a combo once you are hit as well, and the first boss (and the others too by the look of the walkthroughs) love combos. I then tried being a mage and just bombarding all the dangerous enemies from a distance with magic, but they move in on you so quickly that I found myself ragequitting. Again. I just don't have the patience for that kind of thing anymore.

Less severe was Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume. Sort of like Fire Emblem except the default difficulty is Lunatic, there are no quicksaves allowed, and the number of characters you recruit is considerably lower. Oh, and you must overkill your enemies by a certain average amount in each stage, or face a nearly unbeatable wraith enemy in the next stage in addition to all the other dangerous enemies. After saving and trying repeatedly to bring down said wraith, I gave up. I love me some isometric turn-based strategy, but this is too much, especially taking into account its love for escort missions in the late game- the bad kind of escort missions where the escortee is both suicidal and fragile.

Stygian Mode in Darkest Dungeon.

It's simply no fun, and adding a time constraint makes it all the worse.

Still early in my Long War 2 playthrough, but I wouldn't be surprised if I eventually abandon it as well.

For being too dificult? Last I remember it was back in the PS2. Fucking Kratos`s Clones segment in God of War in the God Dificulty. I don`t care what anyone says, this fucking fight is not fair.
Hint1: Magic is broken. Hint2: You have unlimited mana in Rage of the Gods. There are a bunch of tough situations in that game that you can basically just skip using Poseidon's Wrath even on the hardest setting.
That was what I was doing, activating Rage of the Gods and spamming Poseidon`s Wrath every chance I got. Still couldn't past that part.
