Hello fellow gamers,

I've traditionally been a (quite happy) PC gamer but I've been thinking about buying a console as well. I realize that this is quite an inflammatory thing to ask, so I apologize, but I'm wondering if the Xbox 360 or the PS3 is the way to go for me. My brother already has a Wii that I can play so I won't get one myself.

I'm not much for Final Fanatasy or MGS games as I'm (naturally as a PC gamer) more of an FPS guy. But I won't buy a console for PC-centric games like Valve games and such. I am a big fan of the Silent Hill games though.

Some thoughts on Xbox 360:

- I really like the 360 controller.
- I've heard that cross platform titles usually play better on the 360. True?
- XBLA seems to have a lot of cool games.
- Xbox Live seems nice but I won't play a lot of games online since the only online game I play is TF2 which I play on the PC anyway.
- Some people believe the 360 is starting to show its age and that it is at the end of its lifecycle. True?
- The infamous RROD. If I get myself a brand new Xbox 360 tomorrow, will it be RROD-failsafe?
- Any exclusives on the Xbox 360 that I should miss out on?

Some thoughts on the PS3:

- I really don't like the PS3 controller as I think the triggers are awkward and I prefer the analog placement of the 360 controller. Any 3rd party controllers? Maybe I'll get used to it if I get one.
- The new PS3 slim seems small and quiet.
- The PS3 has Blu-ray which is cool but no deal breaker for me.
- Little Big Planet seems cool.
- I'm not that much into FF or MGS.
- Flower looks awesome.
- The PS3 is more futureproof... true?
- More powerful hardware? I've heard information contradicting this which is saying the 360 has better graphics capacity.

I would love if we could keep this flame free and avoid any "360 roolz, ps3 suxx!" comments and keep it constructive. Both systems have their merits and I would be asking if it wasn't such a hard decision :)

I have both systems and i would go with ps3. If you get Ps3 then make sure you get some of the better games like Resistance 2, LBP, Ratchet and Clank, and definitely download Fat Princess on PSN. Fat Princess is only 14 dollars and it's completely worth. And on a nice TV blu-ray is great.

The 360 currently has a bigger game library than the PS3, but the PS3 is slowly catching up. I wouldn't say that the new 360s are RROD-safe, but I'm sure the chances are greatly decreased. Many people who bought the 360 weren't highly active console multiplayers until they were introduced to Live. And the arcade games are pretty decent.

The PS3 has "better" hardware, but developers are having trouble making games for it. However, as time goes on, devs will have a easier time making games due to expierence. Home (the PS3 online system) is free, but does not include as many features as Live.

When it comes down to it, it comes down to the console's game library. Just look at some exclusives for both consoles and decide which games you would like to play.

Quite a tough question, If I were you, the 360 would be my choice, Gabe Newell explained quite well once, that the PS3 is a huge pain to cater for, true, there are some very good exclusive games on the PS3, but that's all they are exclusive, let's use Metal Gear Solid 4 as an example. I have played it, and all I can say is that it is strictly average, and quite patronising to play, yet it has great appeal, I've played Haze, Killzone 2, Uncharted, and they all feel the same. The 360 will be replaced around 2011, and although it's lifecycle will be short, I believe that things like OnLive will probably remove the need to fork out so much money anymore, Halo 3, GoW 2, Mass Effect(The definitave version is the 360 one), and the many upcoming awsome titles seem pretty, erm, freakin' awsome! The countless Arcade titles are pretty cool. Concerning RROD, I think all 36's come with a 1 year warranty, and most retailers can offer you a 3+ year insurance plan, that covers RROD. And trust me, XBL is not just for gaming, its a great social experience! Honestly, the 360 is cheaper, broader, and, if your smart, RROD-Un-Likely-to-happen-able.

I love my ps3, but i gotta suggest the 360 (i have both). I just like the exclusive games on the 360 better, as well as the controller. If you don't care about the ps3's free online or blu ray, then i gotta think the 360 is a better choice for you.

Halo 3 is something I'd like to play but I tried GoW, the first one on PC and I wasn't too fond of it. Having already played through Mass Effect on the PC, I'll probably not play it again. I'm still leaning towards the 360 though.

And again, it's not so much about PS3 exclusives vs. 360 exclusives as it is about which console will play the games that I can't play on my PC the best. Things like Condemned 2 are both on the 360 and the PS3 but not on the PC.

From what you're saying, it sounds like the Xbox 360 is for you. And to answer the questions:
- Yes, cross-platform games are usually better on the 360, however the difference is usually only marginal.
- No, Microsoft has huge plans for the 360 (as evidenced as Xbox Live upgrades and Natal)
- RRoD happens, but you can get a good while out of it. Don't worry about it.
- No, the PS3 is not more futureproof. The future is impossible to see and then there's a lot less negativity in the press surrounding the Xbox.

My personal input would be get a PS3, as I have both consoles I much prefer my PS3. I've had THREE 360's and my PS3 hasn't let me down, plus when you look at the exclusives the PS3 has, 2010 is going to be its year. Plus with cross platform games, there really isn't any difference at all, take it from a guy who has both :)

And if blu-ray doesn't suit you know, you never know what will happen in the future!

And finally yes LBP is fucking awesome.

Ok well, while both systems are great, I would lean more towards the PS3.

Blue-ray is nice, there are a lot of great games for it now, and online if free (always a plus). The load times can sometimes get annoying, but I was a pc gamer before I went into consoles and am used to those kind of things. Other then that, it has all the typical dysfunctions that would come with any console system.

Hmmm, it really depends, you've got to check the exclusives which you want more.

And the 360 has got big plans, and the new 360's are a lot more RROD safe, I've heard, I still got 5 years out of my original 360 and it didn't even RR when it died.

I mean, controllers a lot bigger dea then you think, since you should feel comfortable when you play them.

It's really up to what you like more, since 360 still got a long way to go!

One thing that gives the 360 a major lead ( in my opinion ) is the party system
I have been told that you have to be in the exact same game as the person you want to talk to, but in the 360 you can talk amongst your friends freely

I wouldn't trust the whole 'futureproof' thing anymore - my PS3 just died and none of my friends with 360's have experienced RROD =\ still, the Slim might be different and more reliable... but I'd wait about a month after its been released to make sure if problems haven't been encountered by other players.

Personally, I'd go with the new PS3, despite my previous experiences, especially considering the new price point and stuff that comes with the console itself.

I say go w/ the 360, mainly because it tends to have better exclusives than the PS3 and multi-plat games usually run better on the 360 than the PS3.

Yes, the 360 can be plagued w/ the red ring of death and it can get noisy when playing a game or DVD, but Microsoft does fix or gives you a new system if they can't fix the red ring of death on your system for free. And I'm pretty sure that if you get a back fan for the system that quiets the system down when playing something.

I would go for the PS3. It is a high quality item and is worth your $299, it has a very nice lineup comming to it and already has some great titles like Resistance 2, LBP, and Uncharted.

It will last for a LONG time, and if you already have a PC you can get most of the 360 titles on that so you get everything, PS3 exclusives AND 360 exclusives.

SO bottomline I would go with the PS3

I'd get the PS3 if I were you, as there's more of a balance with the exclusives, all of the exclusives are quality and the PSN games are superior by a vast margin. The floaty backbuttons take some getting used to, but they're overall more versatile than the triggers, as is the d-pad, and the console itself is overall more versitile.

However, if you only want your console for social reasons, get the 360(unless you want to get immersed in a community, XBL is terrible for that), for its party system.

Oh, and a quick way to tell if a shooter is better on Ps3 or 360: if the fire button Ps3 is R1, then it's either better or equal to 360. If it's R2... steer the hell away.

With Sonys "new" slim announcement the PS3 is now the same price as a 360. Considering that many people thoguht it better when it was a lot more than the 360 what does that say?

as for exclusives yes the 360 has been a little better however whats to come on the PS3 is going to be golden (I talking uncharted 2, god of war 3 all that shizzle). Also I started out as a PC gamer and got a PS3 just because all of the good system exclusives on the 360 will inevitably come out on the PC and will be better.

In the end it is really, as people have said, up to what exclusives you like from the system roster.

good luck with the choice ^^
