XBOX 360
- I've heard that cross platform titles usually play better on the 360. True?

True yes, but the difference is barely noticable, plus it's not true for every game. For example, Crysis 2 looks much better on the PS3, and GTA4 doesn't suffer from dissapeaing scenery on the PS3 as it does on the 360
- Some people believe the 360 is starting to show its age and that it is at the end of its lifecycle. True?

It is true. The 360 made no technological jumps when it was released, and it's tech specs therefore are pretty bad - a tricore processor, and DVD player. Because of this, games are limited in size (more discs = higher production cost which publishers dislike), and also don't look anything special. Most of the games that look good use the UT engine, which, depending on how good you are at noticing detail, is just over-bloomed textures.
not true, look at things like project natal and the likes coming out, read my other comment for the full details.
- The infamous RROD. If I get myself a brand new Xbox 360 tomorrow, will it be RROD-failsafe?
Nope, all 360's suffer from the RROD. The problem was that the 360 was released a year before the technicians were happy with it, so an actual RROD proof 360 would probably look different and cost much more.
Also bullshit, and elite has the superior hardware that means it is rrod proof, especially if you play it on its side. it was brought out six months after the originals becuase they suffered the most and the elite system was microsoft's reply to the RROD.
- Any exclusives on the Xbox 360 that I should miss out on?
The 360 lacks quality exclusives. At the moment all it has is Gears of War 2 and Fable 2, which are good games, but short. Halo 3 is coming to PC (Check the Windows 7 trailers). A lot of the 360's exclusives are just timed, whereas the PS3 exclusives are encoded specifically for the Cell CPU, have better graphics than the 360, and are too large to fit on DVD. Whether they are better games is subjective, but from a tech point of view, they are.
And what does the ps3 have? not much seeing as you're not a metal gear of ff fan. resistance and killzone are the best you can hope or, and gears of war 2 and fable 2 arent short, theyre extremely long! and if you like fps check out left 4 dead and left 4 dead 2.

PS3
- The new PS3 slim seems small and quiet.
It is, but apparently the HDD is more noisy, but overall the console is quieter. Either way, the PS3 is a very quiet console, makes less noise than the PS2 in my experience.
- I'm not that much into FF or MGS.
As you said you like FPS' you'd probably love Killzone 2, depending on your level of skill. It looks great, has the best map design I've ever seen and plays better than most FPS'. If realism isn't your style, then Resistance 2 is a hell of a good laugh online. 30 vs 30 with no spawn points and large, well thought out maps is great pick-up-and-play fun.
- Flower looks awesome.
It is, but it's short, only 6 levels (I think a 7th secret level). But it is nice and relaxing, and looks stunning on a good HDTV as it's in full 1080p, giving the viewer and orgy of colour to look at.
- The PS3 is more futureproof... true?
I guess so. The components can't be changed, but as far as graphics go, Crytek said that no game has fully used the power of the PS3, and yet MGS4 and Killzone 2 have some of the best, if not best (Yep, better the Crysis) graphics I have ever seen. Plus, as the console has a bluray player, it means as games get bigger, and data transfer speeds need to be higher, the console can handle it. Plus the OS is great. Can stream almost any media to it from your PC, or just put media on to a data stick and plug it into the PS3. there is no way o say the ps is futureproof. you cannot say that based on facts, nothing is futureproof.
- More powerful hardware? I've heard information contradicting this which is saying the 360 has better graphics capacity.
The PS3 is better in everyway than the 360. Yes, the 360 has a slightly better GPU than the PS3 BUT the PS3's CPU can also render very effectively, meaning the PS3 is a hell of a lot faster than the 360, and has much better graphics capabilities. Plus you can change the HDD to a faster SATA one, or even a top of the range SDD if you want. Having seen 2 demos of SDD in the PS3, one from over a year ago had the SDD performing more slowly then the standard HDD, and the one from the beginning of this month had an SDD performing the same as the standard HDD. Therefore, it'd seem that when SDD's are cheaper and better, they should perform much better than a regular physical HDD.
If the 360 has a better GPU then the ps3 obiviously isn't better than the 360 in every way is it?? plus the fact that almost every ps3 game comes out for he 360 as well, so what does hardware matter, unless you're really into that graphics thing.

And now that the 360 Elite and PS3 are the same price, I'd go for the PS3 as it has better exclusives and is future proof. Plus, Sony Motion could be great for hardcore games, with the EyeToy doing everything that Natal is planned to do. Sadly, Sony do shoot themselves in the foot by not pushing this kind of information.
just had to correct this guy a few times. the ps3 isnt futureproof, microsoft has NO plans to end the 360 lifecycle, games for the 360 arent short and if you get an elite, it is almost guaranteed you will never experience an RROD.

I own a 360 and PS3, I'd recomend the 360, not because i think it, leaps and bounds ahead of the PS3, but from the information you've placed before us, it seems to be more your bang baby. =]

360 showing it's age?: I've never thought so.

PS3 has better grphics: yes, but it depends on the game. Gears 2 on 360 looked better than MGS4. I thought so.though it's not future proof. Eventualy it will be replaced, it's slow, but it is quiet .

Oh and the 360 you can get cheap too.

I'd go ps3, If only because at this point you might get a few more years out of it. I personally like the exclusives for it better, but ive never been a halo fan. also if you dont like the Daulshock 3, try this

Personally I think the PS3 is the better bet the 360 doesn't seem to get that many decent games that don't just appear on the PC anyway.
Even from seeing the latest Cryengine 3 footage the PS3 seems to lack a lot of shadow quality over the 360 I have yet to see the working examples of the PS3's Ultimate power! sure it has nice looking games but its hardly like comparing farcry to crysis in 360 to PS3 terms.

This is biased. Just a forewarning.

I spend every moment of my spare time on the internet. That's not an exaggeration. When not on the laptop as I am now, I'm undoubtedly on the 360. You can talk about the great online service; the plethora of great (and often exclusive) titles, and describe 1080p HD till the cows come home, but where the fun really lies is in the friendship.
Yeah, I know I sound like a Disney character but I'm right: the best moments of my 360 gameplay have all been with my best friends. Whether it was making maps in Forge, squadding online in CoD4, guiding each other through the Capital Wasteland or ganging up on the nastier achievements of Left 4 Dead, friends gave back my money's worth for the 360 and so much more.

I think I've said enough :)

2-360 the end of it's life is not true, ever heard of Natal?
Natal = EyeToy.
I should by a PS3 just to drop rocks on it. Cause we were all thinking it, really.

I love that you can change your... thing and it just goes from demented monkey to demented monkey at a Cosplay festival.

Hello, thanks for the informative answers. Although some people seem a bit biased. I will kindly disregard anyone who cannot point out anything which is better on the "other" console :)

Regarding exclusives... Left 4 Dead is hardly a 360 exclusive since I have here on my Steam account. Splinter Cell: Conviction seems to be coming to be coming to the PC as well. Though I must say I'm extremely interested in Alan Wake as it seems kind of Silent Hill-ish and the PC version has apparently been cancelled.

What are the exclusives for the PS3 right now and what exclusives are in the making?
The PS3 exclusives that seem suited for your game style are Uncharted 1 and 2, Resistance 1 and 2, Killzone 2, and maybe even Fat Princess. Also, Heavy Rain looks amazing. I also forgot about Modnation Racers and MAG.

[ Bluray player (better for gaming), better graphics capabilites.

Ok Bluray is not better for gaming due to the fact of the run speed of the disk. A Bluray disk only runs at 8mb a sec as a standard disk runs at 16mb a sec. What people don't understand yet is when the ps3 starts to use the graphics to the full then the lag effect of the bluray disk will show the ps3 hardware may be able to far but they will have to have a lot of the game on the HDD to play it.

360 Has far better shadows
As for Bluray it doesn't effect game quality at all because the textures will get installed on the hardrive which are far faster than optical media plus every PS3 has one.

Hello fellow gamers,

I'm not much for Final Fanatasy or MGS games as I'm (naturally as a PC gamer) more of an FPS guy.
This sentence spelled out the answer perfectly. Go with the 360. You're just like me, and the 360's games are much more suited to your interests. Its fragility and breakdowns are a pain in the ass, but you say you play PC too so you should be able to deal with the small time your 360 is busted, if that happens at all. I'm sure the newer 360s are much more RROD-safe. It's a small price to pay for the great games and great Xbox Live service. Well, you've gotta pay for that too, but it's still worth it.

If you were a PC gamer, then the 360 would be a pretty easy transition.
But when you think about it.Going from PC to Xbox 360 would be such a little move on from the PC world.
