Who do we blame for this?

50 shades whatnow? I hadn't heard of this. Seeing it mentioned next to twilight means I'm not sure whether I want to know.

Some are saying we should blame teens, but shouldn't be angry. I...disagree. A lot. Teens aren't young children, most of them should be aware when what they're reading is, well, crap. Worse than that, it's not just teens who read and support it. We live in an idiotic culture, where somebody looking good is a substitute for them having a personality, that's what's went wrong here.

Who should we blame for that? I don't know, but I have an awful feeling the answer's everyone.

Still, I guess I shouldn't be complaining too much. It's not as if this crowd interfere with my enjoyme-

Oh wait. They do. They crowd around book stores, giving me wierd looks, and laughing at me for looking at "old books" and "nerdy stuff". Their crap has infested my beloved gorram fantasy/sci fi/horror sections, to the point where I'm afraid of trying new authors in case I've stumbled upon a twi-like in disguise. More of this sh** is getting funding, where funding could be given for better things. Hell, how am I gonna feel in the future if I make it as a film-maker, only to discover people only want to fund more teen-vamp-romance crap!? Sure, maybe there's jack all I can do about it, maybe they have the right to like crap, but it sure as hell doesn't mean I lack the right to be angry.

Also, I'd like to know how many people ranting and raving about it have actually read 50 Shades of Grey or the Twilight Saga.
I've read the first 3 Twilight books. My brain started rejecting itself before I could get to the final one.

Not going near 50 Shades with a ten foot barge pole though, so I'm not going to rant about it. It's not my thing, so I avoid it wherever possible. I really don't get what the big deal is about films that target women or teenage girls or whatever becoming movies is. It's not like they're forcing people to watch them.

I hate the fact that the fucking Bourne films exist, but I don't rant about it. I just stay the fuck away from them.

Probably the same group of people responsible for making money off those shitty star wars novels. Who cares about this really? Let people enjoy their thing. Eveyone likes something that can be argued as shit.

I think part of it is just not getting that it's meant to be erotic and refinement isn't needed. I've already made plans to see Magic Mike, and the last thing I'm thinking when looking at the trailer is "Gee, the cinematography is really nice". Magic Mike is sort of obviously meant to be brainless sexploitation with a romance injected to make it seem like the movie has some sort of reason for existing.

The Amazon Kindle is to be blamed. I read somewhere that sales for erotic novels have increased significantly since the release of the Kindle.

You think that's because you can read an erotic novel without anyone actually knowing?

It must be but even if you were reading an erotic novel in hard copy form who would know that it was an erotic novel. The only way people could tell is if it had a really obvious name like Naked Bitches From Venus. Apparently erotic novels are popular with housewives, another advantage of using the Kindle for them is that they can avoid an awkward moment in Waterstone's when they have to ask if they have Naked Bitches From Venus in stock.

Erotic novels do usually have really obvious names and covers though. You can spot them a mile off.

I've never seen erotic novel so I wouldn't know. The title 50 Shades of Grey doesn't sound like an erotic novel, maybe it does and I'm missing something.

50 what? hype? what did I miss here?

*googles*

Do we really have to find a scapegoat for an erotic twilight fanfic becoming popular?
Just humanity being humanity, I guess.

I blame you, however for me now knowing what '50 shades of grey' is. I think my life was slightly better without that knowledge :p

My grandma has about 30 variations of this kind of cover. Always the same thing, but with a different setting.

A friend of mine has read 50 Shades of Grey and has said that the writing isn't very well. For what started off as a Twilight fanfic, I wasn't surprised. I point the finger at the fans, they made those titles successful, no offence. Just vote with your wallet folks. Also, it just that sex sells, unfortunately, even badly written sex.

Oh right. That's a hilarious cover, I always thought the covers would be a little more subtle.

Thank you for showing me that, just thank you. There is no possible way I can have a bad day today now that I've seen that.

Also how are they going to turn that into a movie that isn't either incredibly creepy or a porno? Seriously has Hollywood truly run out of new ideas now?

I think Twilight single-handedly proved that doesn't actually work.

OT: If I needed to blame some one, it would be marketing for the movies. Someone said that those books needed to be movies, and a hefty amount of blame lies with them, but movies can go unnoticed. I was unaware of these books until the first movie was on its way out. It was the movie's marketing that brought the stories into full mainstream view, so I'm going to blame them.

I mean, no matter what the sales figures on the books were before the movies, it had nothing of the following it has now. So many people are too stupid or just plain busy to bother reading novels these days. So even in some super-chick book club, it might be hard to get some one to read a book, even after a glowing recommendation. A movie can spread like wildfire though.

No one... These books are aimed at teenagers. They're allowed read shit. Giving out about teen fiction is like giving out about the lack of depth in The Hungriest Caterpillar.
I was reading Tolstoy and co. when I was 15.
Just because you're young doesn't mean you should read shit.

It's also one of the only genres where female authors won't initial their first name to hide their gender, because female authorship is something of a selling point. For women, by women.

People tend to like bad things :)
Well of course there are loads of stuff that get published that very few people notice but some just have that stroke of luck / marketing experience that they can pull of big sales. And when a book brings in good cash they make a movie out of it etc.
Of course the author is to blame for creating it but also the public whom read/watch it are to blame for keeping it in life.
