Who do we blame for this?

From what I've seen there are two types of sucessful writers, the ones that are really good at writing and the ones that are really good at understanding their audience. Stephanie Meyer gave half of teens girls their fantasy with Twilight, it didn't matter what the rest of the plot was it was going to be popular. I haven't read much about 50 shades but what I hear it's every submissive girls dream. There's not really anyone to blame, it's just the way people are. There are probably some people who can't understand why the Avengers is so popular, it's just different tastes.

Interesting fact: According to the guy who works at the comic book store I frequent, it's the same demographic that buys up all the Yaoi manga. As he put it, "they crawl out of the woodwork for the stuff."

Enjoy that image.
That didn't surprise me as much as how bold they are about it. Back when Borders was still around I used to go there with one of my friends to hang out and read manga, and you would always see at least one lady reading hardcore yaoi.

Oh come now, there is no reason to become upset over a piece of erotica aimed towards middle aged women.

It would be the equivalent of getting angry over the sub-par plot of a pornographic film.
Hey! I hold my porn up to very high standards thank you very much! :p

OT: No one really. This kind of stuff has always been around and always will be. Soon it will be forgotten just like many other shitty books before it.

No one forces people to buy these books, but I would also add blame to the internet and news media. They hype the books up (purposfully I am sure) so taht everyone is talking about them and then everyone has to see what all the hype is about.

I must be very out of touch as I didn't even know about Twilight or hunger games until the movies came out. I did hear of the 50 shades of grey, but I have no idea what it is about.

I would have found that hilarious if it wasn't a real book.... but as it is.... wow, just wow.

I blame the motherfucking printing press! Bringing literature to the unwashed masses of semi-sapient philistines may have been the biggest mistake in history as far as I'm concerned

I think we should blame John Barrowman!

Barrowmaaaaaan!

Also, on a related note:

Anyway, Jesus, just because these books get written doesn't mean you have to read them. And it certainly doesn't decrease the quality of any other good literature that gets released at the same time. If you don't like them, don't read them. Don't piss on other people's parades just because you happen to prefer carnivals.

I've heard there was a rape, but then she asked for it?
So... not rape then?
"Anime/hentai logic":
-Girls getting raped.
-Starts to enjoy it.
-No longer getting raped, just having rough sex.

Or at least that's what I've been told/read.
I have no interest in actually reading the thing.

It's whom do we blame for this.

I say we blame the low standards of the current population as marketed by our fast-food culture of instant gratification.
*ahem*
So yeah, the media. And the people who let themselves become too heavily influenced by the media.

No one... These books are aimed at teenagers. They're allowed read shit. Giving out about teen fiction is like giving out about the lack of depth in The Hungriest Caterpillar.
Do not. Insult. The Hungriest. Caterpillar.

...Monster.

Anywhos, I still blame the authors, it's the fault the books read like crap, and they are the ones who accept the deals, so yeah.. still on the authors. Sure like most teenagers I wrote a few fanfics BACK IN THE DAY, but I didn't go and try and get them published, because I knew they were crap, I can judge the quality of my own work, these people obviously can't.

But who do you point the finger at for all this?
i heard twilight is written very good.
only the story doesnt make any fucking sense and bella is a self depiction of the author.

who do we blame? i do not know.
are we the ones to blame someone? hardly.
there are people who enjoy this guilty pleasure. and seriously, i think everyone has one.

so i just tell myself its just not my cup of tea and move along.

even if i sometimes is hard to do:

After a zombie becomes involved with the girlfriend of one of his victims, their romance sets in motion a sequence of events that might transform the entire lifeless world.
twilight with zombies instead of vampires. blame greed.
1. *well
2. Twilight with zombies? o_O Is this seriously a thing!? -_- Oh my *facepalm* I don't even...

I haven't read it or ever plan to. I never read or even watched Twilight either.

I feel safe in my little bubble.

Yeah, what is this 50 Shades of Grey thing? I worked in a book shop for one day yesterday and about ten middle aged ladies ask about it, but we had already sold out. I didn't think anything of it until a middle aged man asked for it. My boss then exclaimed "What does he want with that book?" prompting me to ask what on earth all the fuss was about and thus learning it was creepy erotica. I'm kind of curious about it. I kind of want to read it just to find out how bad it really is, but at the same time I don't want to because it seems disturbing as hell.
