Oh come now, there is no reason to become upset over a piece of erotica aimed towards middle aged women.

It would be the equivalent of getting angry over the sub-par plot of a pornographic film.

Now THAT's doing the source material justice!

On topic, it's a long established fact that there is a large volume of women who get their motor going by reading "romance" novels like that.

We obviously need to blame women, yes all women for smut like this polluting our beloved popular culture.

All that this pornography proves is that women only think with their vaginas! They don't care about the quality of what's on the screen just so long as it features a hot guy with his shirt off for them to get all squishy over.

This is crass exploitation and I for one will not stand for it any longer!

No one... These books are aimed at teenagers. They're allowed read shit. Giving out about teen fiction is like giving out about the lack of depth in The Hungriest Caterpillar.
How dare you sir. The Hungriest Caterpillar is a genre defining masterpiece and a classic in it's own right. And as such has no place being compared to such drivel as teen fiction :p

I blame the internet. Its nearly always the internet's fault somehow.

It can't be though, there are no women on the internet, and this type of fiction is aimed primarily at women. QED.

I blame fanfic writers.

Frankly, I think you can get angry at the fact that it sold so well, when there has been good books which haven't sold as well. Imagine if some of your favorite games felt the need to pander to the sweaty horny teenager demographic. Wouldn't you feel slightly peeved? Whenever I go into the book store and see an aisle for this I can't help but resent those who buy and propagate the trash. It doesn't that it's popular that I have to like it.

It might not have an effect on the long run, but I can't help but feel that it's not doing humanity any favors that this sold more copies than Harry Potter.

A piece of Twilight fanfiction turned standalone novel series, about a naive college girl who signs her life away to a rich older man, who proceeds to beat, humiliate, and borderline rape her. And people love it for some reason.

Would it be too optimistic to think that the reason people love it is because at the end, the now no-longer naive girl packs in the life of submission and cuts off the older dude's goolies, perhaps stealing his money in the process?

I blame stephanie meyer. after reading the whole twilight series i can conclusively say its a poorly written, shallow mary sue fantasy. (not that you need me to tell you that)

but when i looked up 50 shades of grey i was suprised to find it featured so much sex, considering the twilight trend of "blank personalityless female being pursued by a/many handsome men"

although one thing about 50 shade, the lead characters called "Anastasia steele". seriously? what kind of fucking name is that, thats a porn name, thats the name you expect a stripper to have. Apart from that 50 shades looks like its nothing too bad, just another author insert fantasy but with a better author then twilight.

From what I've seen there are two types of sucessful writers, the ones that are really good at writing and the ones that are really good at understanding their audience. Stephanie Meyer gave half of teens girls their fantasy with Twilight, it didn't matter what the rest of the plot was it was going to be popular. I haven't read much about 50 shades but what I hear it's every submissive girls dream. There's not really anyone to blame, it's just the way people are. There are probably some people who can't understand why the Avengers is so popular, it's just different tastes.

Interesting fact: According to the guy who works at the comic book store I frequent, it's the same demographic that buys up all the Yaoi manga. As he put it, "they crawl out of the woodwork for the stuff."

Enjoy that image.
That didn't surprise me as much as how bold they are about it. Back when Borders was still around I used to go there with one of my friends to hang out and read manga, and you would always see at least one lady reading hardcore yaoi.

Hey! I hold my porn up to very high standards thank you very much! :p

OT: No one really. This kind of stuff has always been around and always will be. Soon it will be forgotten just like many other shitty books before it.

No one forces people to buy these books, but I would also add blame to the internet and news media. They hype the books up (purposfully I am sure) so taht everyone is talking about them and then everyone has to see what all the hype is about.

I must be very out of touch as I didn't even know about Twilight or hunger games until the movies came out. I did hear of the 50 shades of grey, but I have no idea what it is about.

I blame the motherfucking printing press! Bringing literature to the unwashed masses of semi-sapient philistines may have been the biggest mistake in history as far as I'm concerned

Barrowmaaaaaan!

Also, on a related note:

Anyway, Jesus, just because these books get written doesn't mean you have to read them. And it certainly doesn't decrease the quality of any other good literature that gets released at the same time. If you don't like them, don't read them. Don't piss on other people's parades just because you happen to prefer carnivals.

So... not rape then?
"Anime/hentai logic":
-Girls getting raped.
-Starts to enjoy it.
-No longer getting raped, just having rough sex.

Or at least that's what I've been told/read.
I have no interest in actually reading the thing.

It's whom do we blame for this.

I say we blame the low standards of the current population as marketed by our fast-food culture of instant gratification.
*ahem*
So yeah, the media. And the people who let themselves become too heavily influenced by the media.
