For my money, AC/DC and it's not even close.

Why? Because even after 40 years, there's still not a band in the world that can upstage them. Pretty much all of their songs are classics, they're still cool and they're still relevant. When they used AC/DC songs in Iron Man 2, they weren't used as some retro-throwback - they were used because they still kick arse to this day.

People have tried and failed to emulate them for years (IMO the only band that's gotten even close is another Aussie act, Airbourne, though AC/DC are still the kings).

So yeah, AC/DC is still top of the heap in my book.

Personally, I favor the Ramones. Their impact on music in general is massive, and I think their music is some of the most enjoyable I've ever listened to. I love their style, too- they took rock back to the bare essentials and worked from there. The Stooges and the White Stripes are favorites of mine, as well.

The Beatles are probably one of the closest things to a truly "greatest" band, though. They cover so many genres and have accomplished so much that even if they're not THE best, they're way up there.

And then this happens.

Every single time I say I don't like Pink Floyd someone tries to prove me wrong.

'Hmm, he hasn't liked Pink Floyd since he was eleven, but I'm sure that this will be the track that changes his mind and gets rid of ten years of dislike.

...
That was not my intention, and if I came across that way, I apologize. I've known some people who like the Syd-era, yet hate the guts out of everything that came after. If you hate their entire output, that's fine. The whole "I don't like prog" thing gives me a knee-jerk reaction every time I hear it and it's something that I really, really need to get over.

Rock Band the game? Or just a rock band in general? Because I'm a Bon Jovi fan. But as far as I know, they don't have Rock Band: Bon Jovi (a terrible oversight imo).

Don't get me wrong, it's a really fucking awesome song, which is why they can get away with it. But one song does not the greatest rock band of all time make.
I think that said repackaging and relabeling is grievous enough an error for me to ignore how good that one song is.
I agree they're overrated, but, honestly, they're not that limited. Does "Highway To Hell" sound anything like "Big Balls"?

You know, rather than people who just copied black people's music...I think I'll go with the actual black people. I'll go with Chuck Berry and his Band, Little Richard and His Band, and Ike Turner's Rhythm Kings. And then, I'll add in those white people who were Pentecostal and grew up with the sounds that would be the basis of rock'n'roll: Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Bill Haley and His Comets. And I'll not forget those people who helped that Rock'n'Roll sound who were called Rhythm'n'Blues because of...marketing: Big Mama Thornton, Big Joe Turner, Wynonnie Harris, and Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five.

And then I will put on that list those Doo Woppers and Girl Groups--genres that were considered rock'n'roll at the time--without whom there woudn't be The Beatles: The Crystals, The Chiffons, The Orioles, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers.

and if we are going slip into the time of the British Invasion, I don't want to ignore some of the greats of that time: Ike & Tina Turner, The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Isley Brothers, The Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas, The Temptations, The Mar-Keys/Bay-Keys, Booker T and the MG's, Otis Redding and his band.

Yeah.

I'm gonna throw out an oddball and say Coheed & Cambria. I love Pink Floyd & Zeppelin & Black Sabbath & Maiden & all thosde other fucking awesome bands. In fact I always say Pink FLoyd is my favorite band ever, but when I listen to Coheed & Cambria I hear all those other bands rolled up into one & it works. I couldn't stand them the first time I heard one of their songs, but after I listened to a couple of albums because a friend was listening to them I heard all the stuff I loved from those other bands & they did it so well.
Going into this thread I was thinking no one was going to mention Coheed, but lo and behold it's right there.

While I don't think they're the greatest rock band of all time (that distinction goes to Rush, which I'll get to in a moment) Coheed and Cambria was the first band I ever got into. I heard In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 when I was in like fourth grade and it absolutely blew my mind. C & C are absolutely my favorite band of all time and will always hold a special place in my heart. No matter what mood I'm in I'll put Coheed on and sing along to every word of just about every song. They're music has touched me in a way no other band has and I will always appreciate them for it.

OT: I say Rush. I love almost everything they've ever put out and they have such an eclectic range. From they're early days as a power trio, to the glorious 2112 to they're 80s synth based material (my favorite era of Rush).

All masters of their domain, Rush will always be the greatest band in my opinion.

My all time favorite song by Rush and in general

Toooool!
Not many may agree with me because they're actually kinda boring on your first or even second listen through. But dear god, when you get into their stuff, it'll take you to space and back.
But hey, art rock isn't your thing?

Their catchier, more pop-ish songs kick ass:

Antic Cafe, though I doubt anyone here knows who they are. I love their music because it simple. Their songs tend to be about everyday life and aren't like a lot of the music that says life sucks. The music is bright and bouncy and I can honestly say every time I hear one one their songs my mood is relaxed.

I always loved The Who above all else. Obviously they weren't the only one of those sixties bands whose name still lives on, nor were they the only one to stick around, but what puts them ahead of all of those others in my book is that they were able to, throughout their career, blend their punk rock sensibilities (this is before punk rock was even a thing), and clever songwriting, crafting still some of the best-known examples of the rock opera (e.g. Tommy, Quadrophenia). Oh, and Entwistle was a beast on the bass, I mean Geddy Lee looks up to HIM.

I think an example is appropriate. This is a song off of their rock opera Quadrophenia, it shows off that sharp edge that they maintained even later in their career.
