Who do you think is the greatest rock band and why?

For my money, AC/DC and it's not even close.
Why? Because even after 40 years, there's still not a band in the world that can upstage them. Pretty much all of their songs are classics, they're still cool and they're still relevant. When they used AC/DC songs in Iron Man 2, they weren't used as some retro-throwback - they were used because they still kick arse to this day.
People have tried and failed to emulate them for years (IMO the only band that's gotten even close is another Aussie act, Airbourne, though AC/DC are still the kings).
So yeah, AC/DC is still top of the heap in my book.

Personally, I favor the Ramones. Their impact on music in general is massive, and I think their music is some of the most enjoyable I've ever listened to. I love their style, too- they took rock back to the bare essentials and worked from there. The Stooges and the White Stripes are favorites of mine, as well.
The Beatles are probably one of the closest things to a truly "greatest" band, though. They cover so many genres and have accomplished so much that even if they're not THE best, they're way up there.

That was not my intention, and if I came across that way, I apologize. I've known some people who like the Syd-era, yet hate the guts out of everything that came after. If you hate their entire output, that's fine. The whole "I don't like prog" thing gives me a knee-jerk reaction every time I hear it and it's something that I really, really need to get over.MelasZepheos said:

I agree they're overrated, but, honestly, they're not that limited. Does "Highway To Hell" sound anything like "Big Balls"?Xartyve2 said:

Going into this thread I was thinking no one was going to mention Coheed, but lo and behold it's right there.Mr Fixit said:

I heard In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 when I was in like fourth grade and it absolutely blew my mind. C & C are absolutely my favorite band of all time and will always hold a special place in my heart. No matter what mood I'm in I'll put Coheed on and sing along to every word of just about every song. They're music has touched me in a way no other band has and I will always appreciate them for it.
OT: I say Rush. I love almost everything they've ever put out and they have such an eclectic range. From they're early days as a power trio, to the glorious 2112 to they're 80s synth based material (my favorite era of Rush).
All masters of their domain, Rush will always be the greatest band in my opinion.

Antic Cafe, though I doubt anyone here knows who they are. I love their music because it simple. Their songs tend to be about everyday life and aren't like a lot of the music that says life sucks. The music is bright and bouncy and I can honestly say every time I hear one one their songs my mood is relaxed.
I always loved The Who above all else. Obviously they weren't the only one of those sixties bands whose name still lives on, nor were they the only one to stick around, but what puts them ahead of all of those others in my book is that they were able to, throughout their career, blend their punk rock sensibilities (this is before punk rock was even a thing), and clever songwriting, crafting still some of the best-known examples of the rock opera (e.g. Tommy, Quadrophenia). Oh, and Entwistle was a beast on the bass, I mean Geddy Lee looks up to HIM.
