I plan on picking the game this afternoon. I have heard some interesting things about soul calibur V like the online modes and the fighting mechanics work well but the story mode is very insubstantial, 2 hours long. What are your guys' thoughts?

Are the story modes ever important in games like this? From the fighting games I've played, they're just a string of progressively harder battles with a cool cutscene at the end.

I found SC4 was kind of shit, so I'm not really interested in 5.

Two was probably my favorite in the series.

I suck at fighting games. ALL OF THEM. I will never be good at them. I played the one before this for a year and still sucked online AND offline. So its just a waste of time for me.

However I like the idea of creating my own character. Very few games these days allow me to use hand to hand, its mostly swords and katanas. Because people think thats "cool"

I just suck at fighting games so.

I should add that they barely have any items for your character in this game, and most of it is unlocked by beating enemies that are set to the hardest difficulty.

I'll probably end up picking it up. I'm a freak when it comes to fighting games, so it seems like a shoe-in for my burgeoning collection.

As far as creating your own character goes, one of the older MK games tried that out and it ended up being pretty goofy, so I'm skeptical.

My interest in SC dropped after link appeared on SC4, which I thought was cool. Since then, haven't really been interested in it at all

Sort of.

I've never played a Soul Calibur game but I've recently become a Tekken fan so I might give it a go.

I'm not "full price" interested though, so I'm happy to wait.

Character creation has been in since like the third game and in fairness it's actually pretty good. Sure you can make some complete clusterfucks of neon and transvestism (is that even a word?) but if you do it well you can make some cool looking characters.

That said I haven't played SC5 and they could have completely fucked it.

While I agree that story modes in fighting games aren't exactly important, I do feel that enough fighters have included solid single player modes to make it little more than an excuse if you don't at least make some effort. To not recognize that at least some people interested in buying your game are looking for something they can spend time with on their own is just shooting yourself in the foot.

In this case particularly, the previous Soul games, starting with Edge/Blade, on the PS1 were reknowned for their single player story modes and other single player content. Soul Calibur 4 actually had not only a full story mode but also a couple of special single player only challenge modes that would have taken a good bit of time, effort and stat min/maxing to complete. To hear that SC5 actually has cut it's single player content down to a shoddy, character locked 2 hour story mode is a big deal.

Hearing that they still have gimped single player options is frustrating. I miss the other single player modes that they had in SCII and SCIII like edge master or that turn based strategy mode from SCIII.

These latest games still feel like a downgrade from SCIII other than character options and some online play. Some extra clothes options and online modes took out solid single player content, the bunch of create a character exclusive weapons. RIP wave blades :(

Ditto. Normally, I'd say that my love for SCII would be nostalgia glasses, but having recently gone back and played it, I can say that SCII is just as good as I remember it being.

I loved the previous Soul Caliburs, so sooner or later I'll end up getting it. It's kind or like Tekken (my favorite fighting game), only you're whacking people with swords, sticks, clubs, or weird creepy claw things (VOLDO FTW!)

For the topic...NO!

I am not interested in this series anymore due to the bad everything in this game.

Played it, didn't like it.
Gonna play the better Soul Caliber 4.

Okay, Okay, some of it wasn't bade, just the same.
