Link. He goes through all that abuse in the entire series and doesn't say a single word. Now THAT'S manliness.

what about Jak from the first Jak and Daxter.
This. I didn't like when he started talking all that much, I thought it was cool when Daxter spoke for both of them. Also, Doom guy from the first Doom. He didn't have to say anything, he let his awesome do the talking.

Link and Freeman are both cool, but completely silent can get annoying. They never give advice or orders to other characters. The writers have to keep away from direct questions the entire time. It just feels strange.

Master Chief is as close to silent as protagonist needs to be. Says what he needs to and keeps the bullshit to a minimum.

Here's some spectacular originality for you: Gordon Freeman! Even when he gets shot in the face and dies he doesn't make a sound; and things don't get much quieter than that...

People who have played HL will say Gordon Freeman, people who haven't are wrong. Just remember, 'no pit is complete without a Freeman in it'!
I have played Half-Life.

My vote goes to Link.
Then you are just a different kind of wrong, anyway Link grunts so he dosn't count.
Is it even worse that I hated Half-Life?

I generally don't like silent protagonists in a story driven games because I want to know the personality and story of the guy I'm playing.

That said I'm jumping on the Bandwagon of Freemen, because through the interactions of everyone else I ended up caring about him.
