I find that a silly question.

A silent protagonist rarely shows their personality, so what's the difference between them besides situation?
They way the story revolves around their actions and interacts with their history. Or are you saying it that by your sophomoric logic that Half-Life would have made sense if you switched out Gordon for Link?
technically, yes, provided he had a p.h.d. and modern weaponry.
You see, I tend to find it difficult to tell someone's personality in a game when I just have their actions to go by, because I decide their actions it's less their personality, it's mine. Sure, they get a backstory, but it can't be too detailed, or it defeats the purpose of their muteness. At least with dialogue I get an indicator of how they are supposed to act.

Now, I'm not saying silent protagonists are bad, quite the contrary, they give the player more flexibility when they are deciding their actions, and allow them to make their own unique character in each play through, they are like a blank slate, if you will.

That's because you are Gordon Freeman, you are link. That's why a lot of people enjoy games like Half-Life. Because you are the person role-playing the protagonist.
I myself can never begin to imagine how half-life would work if Gordon would shout out cheesy one-liners half the time.
So Freeman lovers are a bunch of narcissistic geeks, I get it now. You guys should just join the armed services and learn self fellatio. Also, you aren't supposed to have cheesy one liners in a game. Thats a bi product of bad writers, the same people responsible for characters like GOrdan Freeman.
Jesus Christ, can you not have a normal conversation with someone without insulting them?
As for bad writers I'm not quite sure where you're going with this. What do you mean you are not suppose to have cheesy one liners in a game? Have you never heard of characters like Duke Nukem? Intentional or not one liners are part of the game that has them.

EDIT: Narcissistic geeks? So... if you enjoyed Bioshock, Half-life 1-2, any Mario game, any RPG and any novel that refers to the main character in the first person and many many more.
You are a Narcissist.

How much better the world would be if I could chose Sonic the Hedgehog...
If that series' abominable voice acting isn't proof that we aren't living in the best of all possible worlds, I don't know what is.

(Serious vote: Gordon Freeman)
