I started out as a Drizzt fan, but over the years, I came to realize that being the biggest, most unstoppable badass on the block is kinda cheesy. He doesn't ever really lose, and that kinda loses its charm after a couple story arcs. It's like Salvatore is too in love with his own creation to let anything truly bad happen to him.
Having said that, I'm gonna go with Roland from Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series. That dude has got some problems, and King isn't afraid to jack him up. Hell, he loses use of his shooting hand partway through the series. Let's see Drizzt get anything more than a temporary flesh wound.
Also, as far as dark elves go, I'm kinda partial to Phaeraun Mizzrym from the "War of the Spider Queen" series. A brilliant, ambitious mage who managed to survive until faced with a friggin' god. In a battle between him and Drizzt, I'd put my money on Phaeraun any day.
