Superman is because when he got killed by Doomsday he came back stronger, and it has been proven that each time he goes into healing hibernation he gets only stronger. So yeah after Doomsday he is hands down the most powerful superhero. However Batman is the "best", but "power" wise superman is the best the guy can literally whup Goku's ass.

The scouters Vegeta and his minions wear when they came to earth were actually dubbed 'Geiger counters' in our version. So Goku is actually radiation in human form and will give cancer to us all.

how about.....The Spectre? He God's vengeance personified

"The Spirit of Vengeance, Spirit of Redemption, Avenging Wrath of God, The Man of Darkness, Raguel"

and his powers:

"Divine mystical enhancements granting virtual omnipotence, although the true scope ranges from the dictates of the Presence.
Knowledge of events before the Crisis on Infinite Earths"

he, in the DC universe, was responsible for "the Spectre was the Angel of Death who slew the firstborn Egyptian children."

and he razed and killed the population of an entire country he deemed guilty of murder, has power over matter, time, life and death...and he was part of the Justice Society of America.

other powerful superheroes would be the Phantom Stranger (unkillable), Resurrection man, Booster Gold (time travel, can change the time line if he really wanted to), wave rider, Sandman (the god of dreams from Neil Gaimans Endless), Captain Atom (the DC universe counter part of Charleston Comic's Dr. Manhattan), Captain Marvel (or Shazam! ), the Flash, Ion (Kyle Rayner before he restarted the main power battery, he had near omnipotent powers, control over space time and can resurrect the dead)

The thing is, ironically enough, the Spectre gets his ass handed to himself all the time.
Secondly, hes pretty much just Deus Ex Machina, even when the heroes get the good idea to 'Hey lets just call The Spectre to smite this guy' He tends to go something along the lines of 'No. I'm nobody's death-stick' and walks away.

I'm going to ignore the obviously omnipotent/truly overpowered characters and say the Flash. He hits harder than Superman, runs so fast you'll never land a blow, oh and has been known to make things explode by vibrating his body through matter. I don't even know if that last bit makes sense, but basically, you die if wants to and there's nothing you can really do against it. Oh, and he once ran so fast that he outran Death by running through time to the end of the universe where death can't exist and is destroyed.

Come on guys much we argue this any longer, lets face the "first" and "best" super hero ever is no other than Canadian creation,

"Super Man".

He can fly, leap tall buildings in a single jump, out run a bullet, and is stronger than anything on our world. He is literally the stuff religions are based around.

He is the most powerful superhero ever, he even survived his own death without continuity.

How many superheroes can claim that?

Matte-Eater Lad. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matter_Eater_Lad]

I think it's fair to say that that is a /thread. Maybe your guys can manipulate reality, control the universe, fly, make things explode by just looking at them and such, but can beat this guy in a hotdog eating competition?

I thought not.

Dr Doom; now I know he isn't a hero normaly (though in marvel 2099 he is) but he is a time traveling warlock scientist, who has beaten the Marvel version of the devil in a team up with Dr Strange. He lets heroes leave with their lives as it would be to easy to kill them. He kills a man by playing a piano.

The Flash? How can he even be a "super" hero, he can't even fly. Even Batman's powerless ass can fly with a vehicle, come on running super fast doesn't constitute power. He even got his ass dealt with by his combined rouge gallery. And as I remember Superman best his collected rogue gallery like ten times already but the Flash couldn't handle it.

Superman > All other heroes inlcuding the Flash.

A few people have said it already but Dr. Manhattan has complete control over all molecules and time and space and all that. Also he walked around as just a digestive system for about a week, you can't kill this guy.

The Silver Surfer is the most powerful superhero. Why? Because he is a force of nature. The guy restored life to his home planet after Galactus destroyed it. Let's see your precious Batman or Wolverine do something that badass.

Even if you can't kill him that doesn't necessary equal to "power". I mean when we think power we think Superman. When we think action we think Superman, when we think Super heroes period we think Superman. The man of steel is a legend and he is so because he is the best and the most powerful of the bunch. I mean he has the full package, invulnerbility to almost everything, he can fly, he has ice breath, laser eyes, x-ray vision, good morales, he can even die and go into hibernation and come back stronger. His movie theme even kicks ass, come on guys quit going for those second rate heroes and go for the winning team, team "Superman"!

Superboy prime he not only punched a hole in reality, he then broke through a 300 mile thick wall of pure willpower.

the hulk is the strongest. at least stronger than superman and thor. he lost to superman in the comics only because it was decided on a popularity contest, and he's beaten thor legit in the comics at least once while thor has never beat him.

The Hulk is like Doomsday both only get stronger and quicker indefintively however we have proven that one body slam out of Earths orbit and back down can finish off Doomsday so logically it can do so with the Hulk. Only think, the Hulk cannot come back from death like Doomsday and Superman can, therefore Superman "wins"!

Thor is stupidly overpowered, due to the fact that he's an actual god. I'd throw the Green Lantern into the mix as well (or anyone competent with a ring), since his superpower is limited only by his imagination.

On another note, this:

I can only think of Dr Manhattan, he would win in any situation against any superhero I know. That was until I read...

Darwin, he automatically adapts to any situation. He is perfectly suited with infinite potential, he could be faster, stronger, or smarter than anyone.
Now Darwin wins... teehee
