Why all the halo haters?

Halo was the first xbox game ever.

If halo didn't exist, then the xbox would not exist which means we would probably not have most of the 360 exclusives we know today. ex: gears of war,crackdown,and a bunch of other games I forget.

We might not even have 1st person shooters on a console since halo was the first console shooter that worked right.

Halo is a good all round shooter with an interesting background story.

But some players who expect a story, they see a sci-fi action movie that they can play.

I didn't like the Halo franchise just because of Halo 2. Yes, Multiplayer improved quite a bit with decals and Elite, adding Dualwielding was a big plus. But they ruined the feel of the Covenant weapons. They made an Alien sniper, Alien shotgun and just an altered version of the Plasma Rifle. The feel of Halo was gone, instead you got 'High jumping soldier and The Little Shop of Horrors.'

And last: the infamous cliffhanger. Forcing players to buy an Xbox360 just to see the ending of something that didn't have the special feeling of the first game.

I don't know where Halo is going now, but it's not what the first players wanted it to be.

As soon as Halo became such a huge franchise then all the nonconformists had to dislike it on the principle that because everyone likes it so it must be hated. I actually was the other way around, I got it for PC and simply didn't like it at all, it wasn't anything in particular, it was just that I never found it fun. However my opinion has changed somewhat due to playing it a lot on the xbox 360 in New Zealand with my friends who love it. One of the big arguments against Halo is that it's cliched and does nothing new but why would it want to? For me its simplicity and (already) tried and tested formula is what makes it such a good game. Even someone new to consoles (or PC gaming for that matter) can just pick it up and learn the basics of the game in very little time. And whether you play for the story or just for the gameplay it's a game you can very quickly get in to - the story is unoriginal at best but at the same time it is well written and due to the cliches it is pretty easy to follow, though if the story is not your thing then you can completely ignore it still enjoy the game without feeling like you've missed a fundamental part of the game. The thing that draws so many into the game - whether you just play games now and again or you're a hardcore gamer who plays day in day out - is also possibly the biggest drawback of the game to probably an equally large portion of "gamers" is that throughout the whole series Halo does absolutely nothing new.

As you can probably tell I like Halo quite a bit - though I have still never found a game the I genuinely cannot put down - but at the same time I can see it's flaws. I think a lot of the time Halo is hated on because it's not breaking any molds, and it arguably pretty repetitive and also there is a massive fan-base which of course means that people have to hate it purely for being popular. To me it's a good game that I can enjoy with friends, one that doesn't require much thought and one that although doing nothing new, does what it does well.

i love it how most if not all the arguments being made for halo in the OP were saying its great because its the most popular game on XBOX LIVE. yes it might be great for the xbox people (i own an xbox 360 btw but i only play multiplayer on the pc) but i prefer more refined shooters that require a bit more skill then circle strafing and doesnt have an autoaim assist or what is commonly known on the pc as an aimbot.

as you can tell im a "halo hater" who has actually infact played halo both online and offline for a period of time.

p.s. whoever said that halo defined the fps i and cod i lol'd at because cod originally came out on pc and so has different feel to it completely because of that. also some of the features that halo has taken and has grown i personally think is crap (regenerating health really?)anyway can't wait to see if the battlefield series is going to be going back to its roots in its next game in terms of health bars medics and no redicuously overpowered weapons (im looking at the unpatched versions of the M60 in BFBC2)

Its a fine series of games Iam sure its just that its a cool game to hate right now, along with MW2. Its usauly pointed out to be terrible by sony/nintendo fans, and pc gamers like me just dont get what the big deal is about.

I am asking why are there suddenly halo haters coming out of no where? When halo 3 was the most played game on xbox live, there was barely any haters in my opinion(at least they were not very obvious). Everybody used to praise halo for it's awesome multiplayer,single player, and awesome main character in the form of Master chief. Then suddenly after modern warfare 2 comes out, the forums are filled with people hating on halo. Come on people! Just because halo 3 is not the most played game on xbox live anymore doesn't mean that we are supposed to hate on it. Halo 3 is still the 2nd most played game on xbox live anyway.Halo 2 was the most played game on original xbox until it got shutdown. Modern warfare 2 might not exist without halo! Hopefully when halo reach comes out,this hate will come to an end. This is just my opinion though.

Just a couple of things I find horribly wrong with your argument.
Gears of War is not made by nor as far as I know is Crackdown thus if Halo or the Xbox were never there they would still exist on the PlayStation or another console or PC which the first Gears does by the way.

Halo was not the first FPS on consoles that worked right. We had perfectly good working ones on the PS2 and N64 like Golden Eye, Perfect Dark and Time splitters. All highly praised brilliant FPS games on consoles and all credited with bringing FPS to consoles and all released before Halo.

MW2 would also exist without Halo seeing as how the series started on the PC I don't see how the xbox contributed to solidifying its existance as game.

As before to point out here Call of Duty is a PC shooter and not a console shooter. The only title that can claim to be a console shooter is MW2 the rest were made for the PC and ported to the consoles.

To your comments on Golden Eye not making the Wii famous of course it did not make the Wii famous it came out 2 generations ago in console terms. It made the N64 famous. Well not just taht but it was one of the amazing games on the N64.

Where are you getting this idea of Halo haters of late. I personally have not seen a single one in ages. Even if there was this is not a valid thing to complain about since it just fuels the fires.

Also since you are new. It is kinda against the rules to make threads like this which have been made before unless up to 6 months old or something. So read the posting guidelines before you post again and use the search to avoid rage and possible banning or probation or suspension.

If cod is a pc shooter then why is it more popular on 360 and ps3? Also goldeneye did not help create a fictional nintendo 128 but halo helped make the xbox 360. Crackdown and gears of war are xbox exclusives so if the xbox did not exist, then those games would probably not exist(since epic games and ruffian studios would not find a publisher for crackdown or gears). Halo actually did help make the xbox what it is today, since at the time, halo was the "only" xbox game out.

This is where the hate comes from. No I don't think Halo paved the way for anything. All of them was a generic FPS that barely had any features to set them apart from other shooters. Its like saying there would be no Uncharted 2 if Mario hadn't come out. There were other FPS games before Halo lke Goldeneye and Halo is definately the best. Master Chief doesn't speak and really doesn't do anything to get myself attached to him. He's just like any other Marine grunt except hes in a power suit. Overall the games aren't bad but the hate comes from when people act like its the best FPS series ever.

X-Box is hardware that was put together by Microsoft, Halo is software that was programmed by Bungie (Bungie was purchased by Microsoft once Microsoft saw it's potential).

Nobody is arguing that Halo wasn't good, but it's sequels were 'meh' and the original just wasn't the game changing phenomenon that fanboys credit it with. And yes, I will give it credit for the best story in a FPS up to that point in time.

Master chief does talk actually and golden eye did not help make something like a nintendo 128 but halo helped make the xbox 360. Also Halo helped make the xbox what it is today. If halo did not exist, then the xbox would become unpopular and they would get rid of the idea of the xbox.

I think Halo should have been solely a multiplayer game. That's where all the fun lies. Give people interesting guns and toys to play with and the game can be taken to new and interesting heights.

The Singleplayer, on the other hand, isn't inspiring. It's the same old slog down linear corridors with progressively difficult enemies and Progressively deadlier guns, which wasn't a mind-blower when Doom did it. But now we have a large selection of games following this pattern.

I don't hate it, I just recognize that Halo's a direct ripoff of the Unreal series, which, at the time were far far superior to Halo in every conceivable fashion, and allowed modding. That's not necessarily anyone's 'fault' per-se, simply, there was better when Halo launched, so I never really bothered with the series other than a cursory glance with the original.

How is halo anything like unreal? Halo did not even have online multiplayer at the time. If anything unreal has started to ripoff halo.

I have the Halo trilogy, bought them all, played them all. Even still, I think Halo one was the best of the trilogy (excluding graphics of course) and since then it has been focused even more on multiplayer than on the already short single player campaign (except for Bungie wanting to have you play it a lot just to get the skulls - not only for the hardest difficulty now, mind you).

What makes a game good is if you enjoy it or not, and some people just enjoy other games than others. So every game is likely to have haters and lovers.

I hated Halo before it was cool to hate it. I recognised it for the average, lack-luster, same-old, been-there-done-that FPS that it is, only seeming to be good due to the painfully lacking selection of X-Box games at the time. It didn't do anything new. Halo was just lucky to be released when it was.

If it had been released say...6-months later than it was, then it probably would have passed through relatively unnoticed.

Besides, everybody knows that PC > consoles and RTS > FPS. Get it right.
