Why all the Michael Cera hate?

I really like him, in interviews and stuff he seems like a great guy to be around. To be fair, I've never watched an entire film with him in it until Scott Pilgrim but...

Well with Pilgrim he's sort of broke type-cast. He's still a nerd but so is everyone else in the film but he isn't awkward just a little whiny maybe.

Ok, he may not have the greatest range of all time but I don't think thats something you can really hold against someone all things considered. What I think matters is that he plays "his" part very well.

I don't see a problem with him, as said many times already, hundreds of actors get typecast, althought after seeing that photoshop of the 'acting guide book' I'd suggest whatever movie he does next, he demands some kind of new haircut, if you don't want to be typecast, maybe don't look exactly the same every time. Seriously a simple thing like that could really help.

As for the 'damn that guy needs to work out', would looking like a 'Pumping Iron' era Arnie really help him get work as the misunderstood teen?

I think my only real problem with it is that he's obviously a good looking, smart, well off kinda kid, and as such, it's hard to relate to how terribly hard it is for him to find anyone to date him.

I was gonna comment that I didn't feel he played the same role in Zombieland as most of us would be completely out of our depth and half in awe, half terrified of someone like Woody's character, then I find out it wasn't Cera either. (Damn, gotta suck to be Cera lite, tons of people hate you for being Cera and you're not even getting his fame n fortune!)

I would however ask people here, when you're a teen actor, how many roles are there around for 'financial consultant' or 'grizzled space marine veteran' or 'mutilated serial killer'?

Yeah, I'm sure there's some examples, but generally teen actors end up in teen comedies and romances. The ones that don't tend to do one or two movies then fade into obscurity. I think you pretty much have to do what you're told until you're big enough to call a few of the shots yourself.

I totally agree instead of watching his lame regurgitation of every role he has ever done I'm going out to watch a movie that has actors with actual range and depth. That's why I'm seeing 'The Expendibles' with Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Terry Crews and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Yeah it was a joke, but my perhaps too subtle point was that if these guys can get away with the characters/performances over and over why can't Cera. People should judge movies their quality not for who is in them and their similarity to past roles.

Except for Tom cruise movies I can't stand that guy.

The people you mentioned can get away with it is because they are action stars. People watch their movies and go, "Wow, I wish I can be as badass as them." You don't hear people watching a Cera movie saying, "Wow, I wish I can be as whimpy and socially akward as him."

I like his movies, I can relate to pretty much all them (with varying amounts depending on the movie), being a very awkward teen.

What was the real kicker was the fact that Juno (as a character) was very similar to my girlfriend at the time and Michael Cera is like a white me, so the running joke was that the movie Juno was a prediction of our future. Fortunately is wasn't.

He plays characters that are pathetic socially awkward and limp wristed. His type cast roles and his carefully constructed/managed screen persona is that of a 'nerd's nerd'. Point is a lot of young guys in that target demographic resent the fact that Cera has been deleigated by a handful of studio execs somewhere in hollywood as their sole and constant REPRESENTATIVE.

For as long as Cera plays 'dial-a-nerd' in movies that simotaneously strive for the nerd market at the same time as talking down to it, the backlash from within against him will continue.

It's not his fault of course. He's just a schmuck trying to make a buck like the rest of us. But the dude and his 'people' need to wise up fast...at the moment he's clearly the fast fading flavour of the month... Shit and vanilla. And no one's buying it any more. LOL
