You younguns, I started my anime fandom on Macross, the 1979 Gundam, The Slayers and a whole bunch of other stuff I bet most of you have never even heard of (Space Runaway Ideon anyone?) so don't go talking to me about all new anime being crap, as far as I'm concerned FLCL is still pretty "new".
Ah let em go Pedro, they don't actually know what old means. Let them ***** it out of their system while we watch Shin Mazinger Z this April. (And Tetsujin 28 movie)
I actually have a sneaking suspicion that you're far more old school than I am Omni, I have trouble watching anything that was done before 1980 and I think the most retro anime I own is the original Mobile Suit Gundam. Though I am working my way through my "Good 80's Anime" suggestions slowly but surely.

But do you come from the "fan generation" that had all night Taping Parties? Did you ever cross the entire city to go to that ONE hobby shop that actually stocked anime? Have you ever waited all year to go to the one convention held in your city in the desperate hope that MAYBE they'd have the next volume in the series you could only find a few tapes of?

I dunno exactly how this relates to "new anime being crap" but I can note one thing. A famous Science Fiction Author once commented that "90% of everything is crap," and both the 10% of good and the 90% of crap in relation to Anime have drastically increased in the last 10 years. When I first got into anime you had Dragon Ball, Slayers, Bubblegum Crisis, Robotech, Macross Plus, Sailormoon and Pokemon. This was pretty much all you could ever find, since most of it wasn't being translated. Look at the goddamn selection nowadays! I could go down to the HMV on the corner and buy all of Desert Punk, Speed Grapher, Gundam SEED, Gundam Zeta, Final Fantasy Unlimited, Basalisk and Full Metal Alchemist. In Junior High if I had found a store that had ONE entire series I would have had a goddamn heart attack.

Basically, be thankful you young uns! I wish I had the anime choice you do when I was first getting into it.

I haven't been around long enough for any of that stuff, and I'm pretty damn thankful I can just go to Amazon or walk into my local Best Buy and pick out a ton of good stuff.

And yes, Sturgeon's Law holds true to anime as it does everything else

The lesson here: I'll stay off your lawn old man Steckecilo

It's a little embarassing to say, but the only anime I have really enjoyed for the past several years is Kamichu. No "Lecherous comment leads to violent response from woman" jokes... and no stupid jokes that I can remember. It tackles a very complex subject (Shinto) in an approachable way that non-Japs can actually understand, the mandatory anime love story isn't based on lust, but on feelings (and a little bit of looks). Oh, and the animation is EXCELLENT.

I think one of the main reasons modern anime sucks is because the general audience of modern anime is as stupid as the shows themselves.

Anime stopped being really fun when sending blank VHS tapes via mail to fansubbers was no longer an option. Sending off tapes and then getting them back in the mail filled with fansub anime was such a joyous experience. Even if the quality was cruddy, it felt like a precious treasure from another world.

I still watch a few on occasion, when it's something highly, HIGHLY recommended. And never kiddie TV show crap that shows up on Cartoon Network and the like.

Anything that makes an episode run over more than a couple seasons is usually mass-market poo.

Anime is now and always has been absolutely stupid, you're just old/smart/wise enough now to realize it.

Any specific example to the contrary is just fond memories of childhood.

Not to say that it's all bad, just all stupid.
I note that you don't actually provide any alternatives... that is, if not anime, what?

I happen to have extremely snobby taste when it comes to film (anyone familiar with Parajanov?) and literature (Kafka on the Shore anyone?)... I also like certain anime. I see no reason to deprive myself of interesting ideas simply because the idea happens to be presented in the form of animation and that that animation comes from Japan. And considering that animation does things that film can't (and cheaper), it's extremely weak-minded to discriminate against it... especially since the reason you provided was because it reminds you of the cartoons you watched when you were a kid.

Take, for example, Persepolis. It's not anime (in that it doesn't come from Japan), but it's an animated film. Does that make the film any less important or the message any less meaningful? Or perhaps it means more simply because it isn't Japanese?

So what is it? Are you prejudiced against a legitimate art form, an entire culture, or both?

Some of my friends are pretty big on anime, but I have just never seemed to enjoy it, I guess it just isn't my thing, I tried getting into it a couple years ago, but it never really worked out.

*Returning from his voyage to slay Dragons and Orcs in the highlands*
As I said before, there are a lot of new anime names recently, and most of them are just hoping to score big. Money is everywhere, which is one of the main reasons that fansubbers are being forced to stop a lot of their work.

Most anime that was started this year is just cute or funny. Not trying to be epic. Fitting in some chibi animation here and there for comic relief. Using age old traditions.

Ex. Warrior gets threatened. Warrior challenges other person to a duel. just before they fight, Warrior's name is called out by some emo/fanservice chick he has a crush on. Warrior collapses with comedically distorted facial features, apparently in ecstasy from having his name called aloud by emo/fanservice chick. Other dude who was supposed to be in a duel somehow becomes nonexistent.
Lather rinse repeat to get a cute and funny, but not memorable amine.

The recent EPICNESS awards are split. There are some epic anime, with great story, no fanservice and great graphics, but they piss everybody off because they are different than the previews said. Others are great in all ways, even though they have the stereotypical
emo/goth/unemotional girl who cannot share her true feelings, has a crush on protagonist and usually has very few friends

Kōkaku no Regiosu (Chrome Shelled Regios) is looking promising in my opinion. It has a variety of combat forms. A Sci-Fi theme future world. An all-powerful bad-ass protagonist who doesn't regret his dark past, has a few chicks in love with him
while being completely oblivious to it
, who makes you keep wondering when he is going to Kill All Humans.
Although I do admit that the combat can get a little sloppy
A distant cute girl who has ties to some secret past.
And a Perverted Queen (always a plus).

I think a big problem is that many of the Light Novels from Japan never make there ways into the casual anime viewer's hands. Many of these awesome stories are left in the dark until they take shape as Anime. I don't read Light Novels or Manga, I just watch anime and decide if like it.

the biggest problem with anime is the writing, bottom line. It's starts off simple enough (for most series anyway) protaganist's against antaganist's same old same old right? then about after the first season, it goes to hell with the main story taking so many side stories it leaves you confused on what the original conflict was.

Maybe it's just me, but I think western culture will never understand why animes are written the way they are. Maybe we lack the intellect to understand the writers motives or moral opinions their trying to make through their shows or maybe they all have A.D.D. and feel they have to explain every aspect of every character in the show which is pretty fucking annoying at best.

What I wanna see is an anime written by western writers. Your gonna probably scold me for this but one time flipping through channels I came across a show that was just that. And it got me interested enough to watch to the end I'm talking about "Avatar: The last Airbender". Now I know, it's not a traditional anime, but it's pretty close. Even the writers who were american mind you, dubbed it an "american anime". And it was alright, story was easy to follow, characters were likable, no real in-depth side stories to them, the comedy was enjoyable (even though it was a show for kids, but fuck animes are cartoons too so who cares), and it didn't outstay it's welcome and last about five seasons with closure (another thing most animes do leaving so many open loose ends to the story). They did it before with shows like Cowboy Bebob, Trigun, and I would go as far as to say Ghost in the shell stand alone complex but that might be pushing it.

I would just like to see more animes like that, that's all.

its FAR beyond comprehension. and American fans try hard to express thier love for a culture they're not. pitiful.
You're absolutely right, people should only appreciate art and culture which originates from their own country and no other, otherwise they're just a bunch of posers. Let's just forget the fact that America is a nation of immigrants who's cultural identity is defined by the product of their cultures combined.

That's some solid logic you've got there.

Answer #1: Sturgeon's Law

Most anime has always been stupid. Just like most live action television has always been stupid, most of those books taking up space at the bookstore are horrendous, and not every movie that comes out of Hollywood is cream of the crop.

Anime is a medium, not a genre. Disavowing an entire medium based solely on a few examples of mediocrity is, to put it bluntly, eminently stupid. That'd be like me essentially writing off the entirety of American live-action TV because I can't stand Everybody Loves Raymond, King of Queens, and Power Rangers. Disavowal based on the dislike of certain common elements of animation, art style, and storytelling would be understandable, but any medium that can produce Crayon Shin-chan, Fruits Basket, RahXephon, Cowbow Bebop, and Deathnote makes that really frackin' unlikely.

It sounds like most of the hate is aimed towards shonen anime, but since the genre includes both Bleach, Naruto, Azumanga Daioh (seriously), The Slayers, and (manga form) Negima, that's really not much better.

Answer #2: Target Demographic

You're not in it. Overlaps with the above reason, in some cases.

Answer #3: Horrible Adaptation

Ask any fan of Tsukihime, things get lost in adpation. Since quite a lot of anime is adapted from manga, certain things need to be changed for the result to be bearable. For one thing, in manga form, Bleach has much better pacing, Naruto lacks filler, and One Piece doesn't make me want to stab out my own ears. Short answer: if it started as a manga, read the manga. Well, aside from Excel Saga (which is entirely different in both forms) and Yu Yu Hakusho (the anime is much better).
