Why are most Anime nowadays absolutely stupid.

I never saw Cowboy Bebop, but I hear it is legendary. Toonami introduced me to anime. Code Geass made me a political speculator. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni made me somewhat paranoid.

I honestly hate harem shows, and the whole "perverted old man" thing.
How about Tenchi? It was technically a harem, but it was so epic.
Master Roshi from DBZ and DB was their way of adopting a common icon of anime.

I do enjoy mindless stupidity from time to time.
That is the good life, my friend.

Personally, I am an oldie fan. I grew up on DBZ, Yu-Yu and Toonami. When I moved back to America from China (spent 5 and a half years there, from age 2 to 8) I quickly discovered Toonami. My first impression of Sailor Moon was "Why the heck are there so many scantily clad lesbians trying to save the world with love and peace?"
When Toonami had it's Month of Miyazaki, I practically fell in love with Princess Mononoke. Yu-Yu was awesome, and I love all forms of tournaments because of it. I am a loyal fan of DBZ, and have strong conflicting feelings about the LAM coming up.

There are some Anime that are awesome in of themselves. Examples would be Code Geass, Toradora and To Aru Majutsu No Index. I only recently started checking out some anime, mainly just watching episodes that I missed from Tenchi, DBZ and the first episodes of Sailor Moon, because I just needed to understand the background story behind all the lesbians.

Some anime make you think. I love psychological thrillers. The anime that I watched and loved due to its complexity, and downright similarity to the way I think, was Code Geass. I predicted every political, military move Lelouch made, and every fiasco that Lelouch underwent, and I noticed its extreme similarity to the DUNE series of books, of which I believe in, both as a social experiment resource, and political speculation source. The elimination of hate and war, through the self sacrifice of a single worldly despised and all powerful man, peace is achieved.

I cried at the end. I swear, I cried tears of both joy and sadness.

Which is why a good rule of thumb is, stop watching past episode 50. Any good, self respecting anime will have run its course by then. The only exception I'm willing to make to that rule is Kenshin. Though even kenshin got pretty lame after the Kyoto arc.
Rurouni Kenshin was Epicness reincarnate, but then it gave way to filler. I remember the first time it was put on Toonami, it was forced off the air due to too much violence. The second time it was put on, they finished the first story arc, and even got up into the second arc. Reminds me of how Samurai Jack was kept on the air, because they used oil and slime instead of blood for the fights. Way to fight the censors Jack.

I know many fanboys will get mad at me for this, but I hate Naruto. I will explain, it has all the icons of Anime, nude chicks, love triangles, perverted masters and action. However, I estimate that a good 25% or more is filler. During the first boss fight, with the Water Jutsu guy, I skipped watching Naruto for 5 episodes. When I tuned in again, I was seeing them in the same exact situation, giving long narrations, recapping EVERY SINGLE FRIGGIN EVENT that took place over the past episodes. The second reason I despise Naruto, is because of its fanbase. I can understand how it can compete with DBZ with its legacy, but the products they produce, and the fanatics they garter... I saw a commercial for a Jutsu battle game, where they had a 5 year old kid pressing buttons on a glove, cosplaying as a ninja. No. Just no. After Cartoon Network started filling Toonami with other crap shows, replacing the promising shows like IGPX, and then reducing Toonami to 2 hours. I stopped watching. Toonami was drifting away, as Cartoon Network replaced the fun daytime shows like Tom & Jerry (ITS A FRIGGIN CLASSIC) with the crap Chowder and filth Flapjack. I no longer watch TV, except for a few occasions, because Sci-Fi had eliminated Stargate, the Epicness of interstellar travel, that sparked the basis of my religious/psychological beliefs.

Basically, the New Anime creators are hoping to score big. The styles of Anime vary, from beautiful scope, imagination and graphics, to fanservice and simple Porn. I was not around for the days of Ranma or Speed Racer, but those were the founding anime, on which the pillar of Anime Entertainment stands.

Kudos to whoever read my response, and if you quote me, please only quote the segment you are commenting upon.

My #1 rule: "If you can skip 5 episodes and it still be in the same frickin place, same frickin time and same fricken event, drop it. Also, if you can miss 1 episode, and it practically has an entirely new plot, decide if you like it, or if it is geting too far out there.

My favorite Post-Toonami, Post-Code Geass, anime is the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Kai) series. Those episodes will make you think. Make you fear. Make you hope and dream. Then turn around and stab those dreams into a bloody pulp. It pulls of horror perfectly and then switches faces entirely in the second season. Amazing that a Murder Mystery Game became such an awesome horror.

I hope I am not breaking any rules with a post this long (I cant think of any I might be breaking), and once again, kudos to whoever read this entire post.
I pretty much agree with everything you said. Something I'd like to note however, each season the anime community kinda latches onto just a few main shows, which is fine when it's something great like geass, but if you're only watching to see what gets a buzz before you watch it, alot of truly great shows like kino, or dennou coil will pass you by.

That's a good list to go by.

It's ticks me off when a thread about anime degenerates into naruto discussion when we could be talking about Higurashi or noein ect.

Yeah, it's really quite amazing. Some people don't like it of course. But the idea of comparing it to a shonen like bleach is laughable.

I'm watching Higurashi no Naku Koro through for the first time right now. It's very interesti-OH SHIT SHE'S GOT A MEAT CLEAVER!-ng. if you know what I mean.

Anime is now and always has been absolutely stupid, you're just old/smart/wise enough now to realize it.

Any specific example to the contrary is just fond memories of childhood.

Not to say that it's all bad, just all stupid.

Oh, yes. I think my favorite part was
{when Rena and Keiichi were fighting on the roof}
and the scariest part was when
{Mion traps Keiichi in the torture chamber, and you find a hysterical Shion in the jail cell. It was just so awesome.}

Nice list, I have seen about 1/4 of the things there. Haruhi is just impossible to hate. Samurai Champloo didn't interest me that much, as the only Samurai anime I have liked so far was Rurouni Kenshin.
Thanks again for the pic, although I am keeping my distance from 4Chan.

Oh thank you o glorious sage, for coming down from your throne and enlightening us. Natch, only I distinctly recall watching one or two animes of recent note, none of which were either fond memories or stupid...although, compared to you oh venerable sage, mine and several established reviewer's, site's & magazine's opinions are but dust in the wind against your unshakable thought processes.

But then, who always agrees with the critics? Ahahahah, how delightfully riotous, well, to each his own as they say. In the end. Of course.

Maybe you're not watching the right ones. I like alot of animes, and yes, some of them can be quite silly. Its good to stike a balance though. I enjoy all different types of animes from the horror to the harem and every step in between (cant say I watched much of lucky star before giving up on it though). If you want action, I can recommend Samurai Champloo and Blade of the Immortal. Those are both pretty good.
What was it about Bleach that you didnt like? What episode did you see?
I think the Blade of the Immortal manga beats out the anime in so many ways.

And while I love Naruto and Bleach, two of my favourite long runners, I realise they aren't the best anime in the world.

What does annoy me however, is when people see an episode of Bleach, despise it, and say that the entire anime industry has gone to hell. There is a plethora of great anime out there.

For example (anime this decade):

Death Note
Fullmetal Alchemist
Mushi-Shi
Beck
Noir
Wolf's Rain

And so on and so forth. The stuff that you consider to be 'crap' has always been around. Always. It's just either you're old enough now to notice it, or you just haven't been looking far enough beyond the Cowboy Bebops and the FLCLs.

I understand you don't like some of the popular shows nowadays, but for Thor's sake don't vilify an entire genre/industry, it fucks me off.

I disagree with this statement, but would point out that such a view is much preferable to the opposite one: That all anime are good, and far superior to western media. For down the path of the Weaboo lies damnation, and there is no return.

I've been very, very careful with my anime watching, as I dont want to end up Wapanese like two of my friends have. So, I'm careful to only bother with stuff of decent quality, mostly in the Sci-Fi area

Fullmetal Alchemist- first one I saw, apart from Pokemon (which doesnt count in this discussion). In retrospect, not the best thing since sliced bread, but good, solid series. Didnt have any problem with the movie

Cowboy Bebop- some of the episodes were hit-and-miss, but 80% were good. A real masterpeice, as everybody seems to agree

Samurai Champloo- Cowboy bebop in Edo period japan, with hip-hop music. Good.

Death Note- Saw the first 10 or so episodes with friends. Liked the concept, but it didnt grab me enough to follow the series. From what I understand, it gets kind of crazy-complicated and jumps the shark fairly quickly. Apparently, L dies. That makes me sad. L was cool.

Code Geas- Saw one or two episodes. Read the TVtropes page. Sounds generally good, if a bit stupid in places, (probably intentionally so).

Evangelion- Full of flaws, but worth the watch. Shinji's a whiner. Found the angels particularly creepy, since several of them looked like burgess shale creatures. made the whole "alternate paths of life" thing very freaky. cant stand any other super-robot shows.

Melancholy of Haruhi...- worth it for Kyon's snarking and Haruhi's sociopathy, and the Dynamic Entry scene. I have formulated a theory, called the Kyon Insertion Theorem, that proposes that any anime that contains a Everyman/Ordinary High School Student/Whiny Spineless Git character (Shinji, for example) would be massively improved by replacing said character with Kyon. Imagine Kyon piloting an EVA or dealing with Auska, and you will see what I mean.

Harem/magical girlfriend anime in general- ragehate. saw one or two episodes of this kind of crap. Now causes me Rage whenever I encounter it.

Trigun- Good, saw first few episodes, never got around to finishing it. Probably should, at some point

Fate Stay Night- Saw a few episodes with friends. Hated it. Seemed like a MTG ripoff with harem/magical girlfriend aspects, which caused even more ragehate. Kyon insertion Theorem Applies.

Ghost in the shell- has many of the same problems as the Matrix, but still cool for the tech, the Tachikomas, and Batou. Decent, but not a patch on champloo and bebop

Elfen Lied- Borderline. Serious flaws, plus the nudity and violence (and the monsterousness of the human characters) was so over-the-top it became funny, then disgusting, then funny again. Lucy was an interesting character, and some of it got me genuinely bummed out. But, mainly I liked it because it was making fun of the magical girlfriend/harem crap that I hate so much. Its like robot chicken's carebear genocide style skits, only this one added a psychotic, damaged, hot, telekinetic mutant to chobits. Once more, the Kyon Insertion Theorem applies.

I think what ruined anime for me at a young age was all the giant robots.

Story Board 1: Oh, we can only do it with the help of this giant fighting robot.

Story Board 2: We can only have fights between giant robots, but they have surfboards.

Story Board 3: We can only have robots fighting, but they use swords instead of guns you see all the other giant robots on the field with, but they always end up losing to a sword.

Story Board 4: Giant Robots... and they... hold on a moment... they go through high school?

And in all animes there's usually one episode where the person will have to hop inside a giant robot.

Seriously, I clicked over and caught an episode of bleach and felt like blowing my brains all over my fucking wall, my.. my beautiful wall. I remember when I would stay up all night to catch an episode of Cowboy Bebop or FLCL but now, like the music business Anime's been filled with mindless shit.

Why do things like this have to happen?
And what Anime cliche drives you up the wall to the point of blowing YOUR brains out, all over your beautiful walls.
Most Anime has aways sucked, at least over here in America, because the idiots who like shitty, cliche, pieces-of-shit shows, like harlem shows, have outnumbered the consumers who like good stuff, and thus, we get sent only the steryotipical shit that sells.

I just can't stand the cliches in anime. It's all become such generic predictable crap. I especially hate the ones where one guy is being stalked by like ten girls that each fill in a specific "anime girl personality". And to make things worse, the guy is always the same. Generic nice guy, nothing stands out about him... they even LOOK the same.

I think they just go too long now too. There used to be those magic numbers that most series abided by. Either 13 eps or 26 eps. Some would go as far as 50. Okay, fine. If the story is decent enough, then yeah, 50's fine. Any further than that is pushing it (with a few exceptions), even if the manga is still going strong. Not that THAT matters anyways, cause half of anime won't even follow the source material anyhow, not to mention the filler eps that run rampant and are just the biggest garbage you can ever slap in the fans faces.

Take Samurai Deeper Kyo for example. Awesome manga, seriously. But the anime was.... just the most off mark piece of garbage I'd ever seen. Really just an insult to everyone who's worked on the manga. Same with Rurouni Kenshin. Well, actually, not as bad. It was actually doing okay though until the third arc, and then it caught up to the manga and instead of waiting for the Jinchu arc to finish, they made up a whole shitload of uninspired stores which weren't worth watching. At least they tried to make up for it with the OVA's though, so they get points for that.

That's just my opinion though. I really prefer just reading the manga, since 99% of the time it's better than the anime. The only times I've ever enjoyed an anime more than a manga is when I've seen it before reading the manga, or when there's not even a manga, like Gundam Wing for example. That's just my personal taste though.

Still, I agree with the OP. Bleach has gone down hill. I stopped watching it when the fillers started up, but even the manga has just gone on too long, and doesn't seem to know where it's going half the time. But that's what I meant earlier in my post though. These stories not only go on for too long sometimes, but they also have too many characters to boot. They just gotta let it end already.

I generally prefer the manga ( as it's normally the original form of the story anyway) and being a mangaka myself know that there is a stress about the issue over going to an anime format.

Biggest problem is that an anime following your series almost to the T will catch up with your current point FAST, so to buy time alot of studios add in alot of random scenes, and worse yet even entire seasons that are filler...not written by the real writer, not always approved by the writer, ( the bount arch, and several of the episodes over the last few months of bleach were fillers, and not considered cannon at all)

Now I get both manga, and anime straight from japan no subs, just as it is.. then see it later on " months or years later" in the West completely taken out of context and the language changed...

Now fair to say thats not always a bad thing, as some phrases, or context is something anyone in the west, even the most die hard otaku will have problems understanding, so they paraphrase it alot, though some series do this more than others.

when something goes anime it already faces a change while in studio...in the east, just like in the West...things aired on TV have to meet certain criteria, so to assure this the studio directors have to edit it down in content quite often.. then should it reach, lets say the states.. it has to usually be edited down further to be more people friendly by U.S standards.

Sometimes it's completely bastardized. Lets take Desert punk. In the manga it's a long on-going series that has a dark and very brutal overtone, it's quite violent, and forces one to really confront the darkest aspects of human nature...
however the anime version of it, though touching the main plot was converted to an over the top comedy rife with big boob jokes, and the " anime's" main character on an eternal quest to get layed, and get payed. then the anime abruptly ends after the first story arch, just as the serious nature starts to come into play. this was done to make it more " people friendly"

and lastly sometimes anime can just blow * even more when you have read a good series before it's made into a cartoon* is because often times the writer /creator of the manga series has not obtained the full rights to make the jump from one medium to another. that is to say a down and out studio has a intern obsessed with your manga...he shows the studio head, they decide " hey we can make this into a cartoon!" well guess what.. they can do so without ever going to you to get permission, and if they put out a half assed show of your popular title, your manga can suffer if its bad.. if it booms you don't see a dime, and it " ws" rare for court battles to go in favor of the manga creator. so for a time it was rare for a origional creator to have full rights over film, print, and marketing..one of the rare ones was Takahashi Romiko ( romiko takahashi) when she began work on Inuyasha she made sure to have her rights fully covered. Though there has been a move to change the japanese copyright system to match more of that of the U.S.

wow this is going on longer than I expected

but in closing I basically wanted to bring up SOME reasons an anime can be...less than great... when looking at it from a transition from paper to film.

and sometimes... a studio can produce crap, just like they can anywhere else in the world.
A very informative wall 'o text.

Didn't know that about Desert Punk. I'd really like to read the manga if i could, but I don't know if anyone has it licensed to be done in english, nor can I find scanlations of it anywhere. It's a really good series but, honestly, it's kinda hard to like Kanta when he's the biggest pervert in anime that I've ever seen. At least Kasuna is a likeable character
Scans and such I think have never been done of it for the manga...What we see on the anime is a....altered version of the first volume where as in the second volume Kasuna becomes " as close" to the main character as the series gets, and the machine gun brothers get much larger parts.

though I do like the anime as well I just try not to connect the two directly ( though anyone who has not seen the series.. if you have netflix, they have it in their streaming section)

another manga I would LOVE to see go to anime if done right is Saint young men...a satirical comedy where Jesus, and Buddha come to earth as mortals and are room mates in the modern age.. funny as hell.. more so with JC blowing all the rent money on samurai armour.
THAT MANGA FUCKING RULES!!!!

Sorry, I just have found it bloody funny. Kind of ironic, considering that I'm atheist.
