Since I won't read every post in this discussion, I'll answer directly; Two factors are to blame. Communism, and the Cold War. Our history with Russia and the nuclear stand-off makes them 2nd only to Hitler and his 3rd Reich. Communists are Americas' old nemesis. They were like our current day Terrorists. Well, the concept of villianry, that is.
