Was it the Hugenots (sp?)? I know they lived in communes and flourished somewhat (I'm not sure to which extent), but I remember France felt threatened by an ever increasing amount of fortifed communes in the country side.
From everything I read, the smaller the population and the more low tech, the easier it is for it to work.
But in the modern world, I'm sure a brain surgeon feels entitled to more benefits than a farmer, just as someone would find a flaw in the system in rise to took over if it was too big.
-EDIT- But I'm not sure if that's the example you meant. The Hugenots existed before Karl Marx, but I think he got some influence off ot them.
