Why Bronies (and Pretty Much Everyone) Should Hate the Brony Documentary

I haven't seen the documentary, but why is the fact that they left out the the rule 34 stuff such a bad thing? Rule 34 states that there is porn of everything. A documentary about comic books wouldn't talk about the comic porn generated by the internent, and a documentary about Harry Potter fans wouldn't discuss the bajillion harry/draco smutfics. What makes the Pony's "clopping" so significant to the fandom?
And point two, if this documentary is to educate people about bronies, why would you want a portion of the documentary to focus on the fact that people make porn based on a little girl's show? It seems counterproductive to want people to understand and accept bronies, but want to also tell them about every dark secret done by a relatively small proportion of the community.

Actually there is already an at least unspoken set of rules for making proper documentaries. There needs to be since many documentaries of the past were bad, like racist bad. That should probably be your yardstick for documentary evaluation. I'm not interested in this movie because I don't considered a fanbase to be worthy of a documentary. I really don't think being a fan makes you special.

Okay so you want a documentary about gays to say how gays molest kids, worship Satan, and have violent psychotic tendencies? Because "we have to show both sides of the story?"
So your game is false equivalence? Because they want things that are real addressed, and you're comparing it to a false appeal to equality.

Huh.

Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

I've already stated things that are not positive you could talk about in my op. People who are fanatical about their hobbies exist everywhere. I don't know what controversy you're talking about, but...how is that relevant? What negative things are you talked about? Be more specific. I'm not dismissing anything that's negative by saying they happen everywhere. I offered a few of my own.
Just re-read it and your right. How'd I miss that? Welp, glad to see we're on the same page than!

As for my example, it would show that the brony community is willing to ostracize someone simply because of their fan-made artwork, lucid though it may be. I can't seem to find the thread on it, so I guess it's a moot point.

Does that mean I came to consider myself as the definitive authority on all things Sky Dancers? Of course not. I knew it was a shameless attempt at getting girls to buy fancy doll-shaped string-pulled propellers that were rumoured to have sliced open a few pre-teen eyes and faces. I knew it was utterly vapid and without any ounce of intellectual value.

You'd think people would still be able to do that with MLP. Because it parrots the word "friendship" a couple times, though, wouldn't ya know, it's all swell and dandy. Grade-A worthwhile entertainment, even for guys who aren't only of the wrong gender, but out of the target demographic by more than two decades, in some cases!

Like I said - it's more than a little bit strange, when you think about it. My guess is if "adult" cartoons weren't so exclusively gore-filled or focused on furthering a comically cynical view of the world, we wouldn't be forced to fall back onto MLP, Foster's or Adventure Time. If anything, this proves some persons are still looking for some nicely humble and cheery cartoons, well into their thirties.
It's not impossible for a kids show to have good writing, even if it is intended for little girls. Just because you personally find it bad doesn't mean everyone else does, and have some secret reason as to WHY they like it. In fact, here's an Escapist thread on that very subject! I believe I've been misunderstood.

I'm indifferent about MLP, to be perfectly honest. I don't hate it. I don't praise the ground Twilight Sparkle walks on or think Lauren Faust and M.A. Larson are our new Scriptwriting and Conceptual Goddesses. Nor do I think it's a wretched pile of saccharine dung that's turning guys into weird bearded creatures obsessed with horses endowed with improbably coloured manes.

I did mention enjoying the cameos, if you'll go back to my post. I like the referential humour - but that's where it begins and ends for me. People can like whatever they like however they damn well please - it's just admittedly odd to find grown men focusing so single-handedly on the idea of "love and tolerance" or twisting fairly flat characters into oddly multifaceted constructs based on their own perception of these same characters.

I'm not critiquing, I'm assessing. Fandoms in general are just plain weird.

i dont quite get why people, especially bronies should hate the documentary. i havent seen it and i dont know if i ever will be i just kind of assumed it was basically just a celebration of mlp fans. i didnt really expect to see the sinister side of the fandom. and i mean yeah the rule 34 shit does exist but i dont think its a significant enough portion of the fanbase to warrant talking about it and i certainly dont think just not mentioning it means theyre trying to hide it or whatever

I think what he's talking about is Tiarawhy, who makes porn and other animations. There was apparently some big brouhaha over whether her non-pornographic stuff should be on Equestria Daily, or something.

Since her stuff does get put on Equestria Daily, it's really not a big deal anymore.

A documentary about... bronies?
There are, like, guys and they, like, watch that show my little pony and like it even though they are outside its target audoence. The end.
That should be all there is to it, shouldn't it?
Seriously, what is there to be talked about?

Are we gonna get a "documentary" about adults playing pokemon games next or something?
How do you fill more than 1 minute anyway?

Guess I'll take a loo...

oh well, I'll never find out then.

It's from a Brian Firenzi video called "Phone Book". I would link to it, but I'm on my phone right now.

I've just spent a good hour and a half reading and re-reading this entire thread, and I feel very enlightened. I'm a Brony, and I was foolish enough to pay $12 for this doc. I wanted to see what we as a community look like from the view of a totally neutral party. Not some Westboro hate monger but someone open minded enough to be willing to see all sides of the fandom. What I got was a John De'Lancie pony singing about how great Bronys are and I must admit I enjoyed it first time. Then I looked around on the various mass of pony sites to figure out the general reaction and found quite alot of unhappy people. I didn't understand so I watched it again and I was left with this feeling of incompletion.
The whole thing with the Doc and the season 3 finale left me kinda shaken and its only now I find myself thinking, "Do we really take ourselves too seriously? I mean did we really need a Documentary about how not-in-the-least-bit-odd we are?"
It didn't challenge anything about the community that interested me, like how the input of us as a group impacts the show, the "Derpygate" nonsense and what I most want to know, Hasbro's actual opinion of bronys as a demographic.

I love MLP. Total Brony. couldn't be less interested in a "documentary" about us, by us. No thanks. I'll just watch the show and mourn the death of Fighting is Magic, thanks.

Fucking Hasbro. :(

To be fair, Hasbro had no part in this other than their characters being in it. This was all funded by an independent Kickstarter, and sold by the filmmakers.

If bronies can discuss MLP on The Escapist then i don't see why i can't discuss about air.
Our beautiful Earth is a wonder of science. Air is one of it's many great features, and I see no reason NOT to discuss it.

How does it make you feel to realize they raised over $330,000 for said documentary. I mean, after all is said and done, no matter how you try to justify, it stills comes down to "dudes like colorful ponies" and I'd be fine with that.
