Because why not?

I like playing as female characters. Does this carry some deep complex social, political or psychological meaning? No. Go away.

The "if I'm going to be staring at an ass"-argument is such a cop-out. If you like playing as female characters, you like playing female characters. There's nothing wrong with that. You're not staring at your character's ass after an hour. If you are, then I fear and admire your tenacity.

[sub]it's also not funny the thirtieth time in the same goddamn thread[/sub]

I don't always play a female character, but when I do, I play one because the character/person I'm basing it off is a woman.

FLAWLESS.

I usually play as female sheperd, her voice has alot more feeling, I usually play as feeling as think they have better personalities rather than a male character just always saying "Im a man, i kill things. Grr" Notice my excellent portrayal of a male character. *Sarcasm*

As a male, I choose to play a female characters in third-person-games because I rather look at a female behind for long, long hours rather than a guys back-ending.

Sexist? Naw.

On a entirely different level, I always choose to play something I'm not already in real life, namely; Human, male.

Yeah, so there's my answer.

I play female characters because sometimes I just like playing female characters. The few games I ever haven't would include: Ragnarok Online.

Depends on the genre and the game, I guess.
You cannot expect a player of "Tomb Raider" to give the answer "Because I chose to." Unless with "I chose to." means "I chose to buy the game and also intend to play it".
Concerning RPGs most men I've met say either:

a) Because they look nice.
And clearly that is a valid point. Who wants to play a male avatar simply because they are male when, especially in WoW, most male avatars look... uhm... >.> like THAT?
b) It's interesting to roleplay.
Not only interesting, also quite challenging I might say. Kudos to all men who do that!

On a sidenote: Why do women play as males? :)

If I can create the character, than I will choose female on the first playthrough... No idea why, but I usually make the character my image of the perfect girl...

I will create a male character for the game...

... eventually...

As countless men have said before me and countless will say after me:

"If I'm going to be staring at an ass all day, it might as well be attractive."
^Ooh-Rah?

Also, dialogue changes w/gender and exploiting my own gender of items and In Game wealth. Good times.

I already play a dude in real life so in games I like to change it up, plus I like looking at the view.

The eye-candy factor certainly plays a role in this, much of the time. That aside, in a single-player game a strongly-written female character is as enjoyable as an equally well-written male character.

As for RPGs that give the male/female option, be it an MMO or otherwise, for those of us who have the little wannabe-writer imp somewhere in our brains we like to think we can also write female characters, instead of the typical male-relatable ones.

Or at least that's what I do.

1). it's interesting to do something slightly different.
2). it shows your comfortable with your sexuality.
3). given the chance, most guys (or at least all the ones I know) would take the oppurtunity to be a girl for a day, either for innappropriate and perverted reasons or just to see the different ways their treated.

as I do commonly that is not 100% serious so in all seriousness, because its easier to look at a smoking hot bombshell run around than some ripped dude that makes me feel bad about myself with his muscles the size of small children, and that is generally what the two genders look like.

If I'm a wizard, female.

I mean, usually games make male robes look like tight dresses.

Seriously, guy in dress, or girl in dress. Easy decision.

Primarily for variations sake. I'm forced to play as a dude in so many other titles, so it is nice to get away from the monotony. Another element is customization.

When I'm creating a female character, I have a very clear idea of what I want my character to look like and I know what I think looks good on a female. Whenever I'm creating a man, I usually just swap the hairstyle and then get on with it. With a female I can spend like 20 minutes tweaking. If find it both fun and rewarding.

In BioWare games, I do it to experience more, but in most other games, I prefer playing a male.

I've never played as a female character simply cause they had a nice ass.

Probably cause they're not really that spectacular.

Well seeing as I'm a pervert and prospective sexual offender I must be honest about this:

I do it [usually] because I've played through the game as a male already
- don't judge me, I'm only human.

I'm impressed, this has never been discussed before. Ever. Definitely not like last week. Or the week before that. Or the week before that.

That said, there are a ton of reasons. Maybe the female character has a better voice actor. Maybe you want to stare at a character model of the opposite gender. Maybe some gamers are just tired of playing the same gender in 90% of games and want some versimilitude. Another big one that I hear more often than one might imagine is to open up romance options for queer gamers. I have a lot of queer friends who played the opposite gender in Mass Effect for instance in order to pursue the relationships they actually wanted. I've never really felt the need myself, even when games do have a romance subplot with no gay option, but I can definitely understand why people do that.

I imagine there are also others who just like it for the roleplaying value. If a nice guy can roleplay an evil bastard in so many games and a screen-tan nerd can roleplay Rex SuperMcMuscleson, why wouldn't you expect a guy to roleplay a girl? I think it comes down to people who approach roleplaying from more of an "I wonder what it would be like if I were..." angle than the seemingly more common "it would be cool if I were..." angle.
