I go female because I am a male. Why restrict myself to playing my own role? Games force you to play as male characters way too often, and so when I have the chance I like to branch out a bit.

i think it is to answer the question that all guys want to answer but are fearful to cause they might lose their "dear friend" which is What would i look like if i was a girl? so the Programmers put the gender choice in so men could answer this question without consequence.....and also so the guy can get a quick wank after they make the girl put on a bikini and swim into a pool of jello for the 9000th time.

I don't, unless there's a difference in the game, like in Mass Effect 2, or Sword of Mana.
Otherwise, it doesn't really matter to me. I don't like to project through a different gender, because let's be honest, the two are very different.

I play as casters most commonly, tend to find that robes and the like look utterly ridiculous on men, it's just aesthetics mainly and I'm not gonna bullshit with any other excuse, I prefer playing as a female caster or a female character in general because they look better.

Just...Please don't give me armour that covers 10% of my character's body, it pisses me off that anyone would wear armour so impractical.
I don't do it personally but a lot of male WoW players role female characters for casters because of how ridiculous robes look on some of the male characters. O gawd, human males in the game wearing robes look insanely creepy.

I don't. Never have done so in a 3rd person game or an MMO, and I rarely even do it in fighting games, aside from Dead or Alive. I'm not exactly sure why, but I guess i just think that Ryu and Akuma's moves are really cool, and Chun Li and C. Viper's are not...I dunno. In all honesty, it's probably because I can more easily picture myself as the character if I choose a guy.

Well, as a chick, I always play as one, I always behave as one. Unfortunately, this gets one of two responses...

A) People assume I am a man and keep calling me "dude"... -.-

or, even more annoyingly,

B) People assume I am a girl, and ask me dumb questions like, "How big are your bewbs, and can I see them?"

The lines do blur a little... sometime group A joins group B once set straight about my gender... and sometimes group B assumes I am taking the piss when I refuse, and joins group A.

As countless men have said before me and countless will say after me:

"If I'm going to be staring at an ass all day, it might as well be attractive."
That is the best point I come up with.

Holy ten ton sacks of spittle.
You sir, win all the cookies you can carry in your pockets, and then some.

OT: I don't play females in games, really.
I only rolled a female on DA:O so I could romance Alistair.

I never have really when given the choice. I can more easily relate to people of my same gender. I may understand this guy and some of his emotions/motives

a bit better than this chick's reactions to things.

Although, I don't really mind depending on the character. I liked Heather from SH3 and Chell from Portal. I can respect a well designed character like Heather.

Because I would much prefer watching a female's rear end for hours than a male's.

Don't judge me. *Shifty eyes*

Males like playing as female characters in video games for the same reasons men (and all who play video games) play video games in the first place: because video games are fun, new, and exciting.

When a male gamer elects to manipulate a female commander Shephard in Mass Effect 2, he did so because playing as a female character is a new and exciting experience.

A female commander Shephard will look, feel, think, react, and altogether experience a different world differently than he would if he were put in the female's place.

I dislike muscled up slabs of meat as my character. Seriously it's like they stuck two cow carcasses together and then gave it a spray on tan(I'm looking at you Epic). I prefer lithe characters, and since that usually means a female character, woohoo there you go.

I just prefer it.
I dunno why, depends on the game/genre
For instance in fighting games, the female characters are usually the faster ones, and I prefer those types of characters

Different reasons for different games.

I've always wondered why it matters so much to people. Yeah, I'm not a girl in real life, I also can't shoot fireballs from my palms... scandalous!

Cause when I'm playing a western RPG where I get to dress my character, a woman character usual has more/better options and over all just looks more visually appealing.

Plus I like playing as a cold hearted *****.

I know a man who chose female Shepard for the sole purpose of hearing Jennifer Hale's voice....actually, that's a bit naive...he probably also did so for the view, as many have already stated.

I, as a woman, try to play a game through a game with both male and female avatars. If the game is simply not worth playing twice...I'll be honest, I'm usually a guy. This is due to the fact that they are often the first section a dev team works on, and the female equivalent is often done second, and if not, as an afterthought. If there are two genders to play, I'll usually pick male and then female. I'm not claiming sexism here, it's just often the progression of development. You'll notice that, in these cases, a lot of games use the same dialogue/script for both scenarios...The only difference being that they make less sense due to the protagonist's gender.

These instances have the potential to be nothing short of hilarious; see "female Shepard sitting with skirt." The first word that comes to mind is "inviting."

Also, I am aware of the fact that the number of exceptions grows with rapid succession.
