i dont think ive ever heard anyone say they hate Oblivion. they complain about bugs, but i dont think they write off the entire game as a steaming pile of horse shit's crap.
Hi! Have you met me?

While I can see why people would like Oblivion I thought it was the most tragically dull and uninteresting game I have had the misfortune to play. That's without getting into all the technical problems.

Daggerfall - Good
Morrowind - Awesome
Oblivion - er wtf happened?

Completely unbalanced levelling system.
No method of integrating RPG tactics into a single player (as opposed to party-based) combat.
Open environments make story unfocussed and anti-climactic.
Dialogue system looks horrible.
Character customisation too time consuming for too little pay-off (never saw my face in Fallout 3 after I finished making it).
Bethesda think they're an autocracy.
Fallout 3 rewarded inventory hoarding.
Oblivion was repetitive.
Can use strategic approaches in Fire Emblem, Icewind Dale, Divinity games, and don't have to mod' the bugger out of them to make them usable (as with Oblivion and its horrible map).

Fallout 3:
Obviously the bland environments are intentional because of the setting, but that doesn't make the game fun to play through. To me it's and example of why you shouldn't apply to much reality to the look of a video game.

The combat system would be great if it played like an FPS but with added optional vats system. But the focus on vats and clunky shooter controls both take me out of the games immersion and are unsatisfying.

Fallout 3 at least has some interesting stories to tell from within it's vaults...but this does not make it a good game...merely a boring game with some interesting elements.

Oblivion:
I loved oblivion on release and spent roughly 300 hours on the game. Oblivion was a great title for the time but holds no lasting appeal to me. I consider the game unplayable by today's gaming standards. It can be hard to put into words why this is...but to summarize the game is just broken.

You can easily build your character 'wrong' and be punished for enjoying it the way you wanted to. You can also build your character 'optimally' and completely break the game...essentially activating a god mode code. The difficulty curve and scaling just isn't there.

The combat system is awful due to exhaustive repetition. The whole skills leveling up system is great in theory but a complete grind in reality. You shouldn't have to cast restore and damage spells on yourself in order for you to reach high level casting by the time you need it for tough enemies. Progression should feel natural, not forced.

I'm actually a fan of Bethesda games, but I fully understand why tons of people might hate them. These are extremely flawed games with some poor execution that happen to grip many players and keep them invested for hundreds of hours. I don't expect Skyrim to change anything but I will hope for the best.

I wasn't a fan of Oblivion because it felt like Bethesda set out to make a "FUCKIN HUGE!!!!!11" game and put everything else on the backburner. So what you end up with is this massive land where everything looks the same, there are no memorable characters or locations, there's no plot so nothing has any context, and nothing you do has any effect on the world. It probably sounds like I hate it, but I really don't. It's a good game. I absolutely loved Fallout 3, though, and that game got me looking forward to Skyrim more than any Elder Scrolls title.

People don't have the same opinions as everyone else, and those games aren't utterly perfect. Quite flawed in fact.

Oblivion has a lack of voice actors, repetitive environments, boring combat, bows being absurdly underpowered, the grinding element, levelling up feeling more like a punishment than something good, how easy it is to make your character broken, et cetera.

Fallout 3 is bland, intentionally or no it's still bland. The FPS part of it is incredibly weak, compared to any other FPS fallout just can't compare. Without the RPG parts it would be an atrocious game.

And of course: Their games are absurdly buggy, to some to the point of being unplayable. For games built around immersion, that's a serious hindrance.

This coming from someone who has easily plugged in at least 100 hours to oblivion, and really enjoyed FO3. But at least in my opinion they were much better than Morrowind. I've tried 5 times to play that, and the game always laughs at my efforts.

I don't play many of their games right now, but I own Fallout 3 on Xbox 360 and PC. I don't know why but I literally can't get enough of it. I lent the 360 version to my friend, because he kept bitching about it without having played it.

He played it through, and admitted it was actually a pretty good game, then got up to Broken Steel content and had a game-breaking bug. Now every time I mention Bethesda he goes into a huge rant about how shitty, samey and badly made every single one of their games are (that he has played one of). I think it's mainly the cases like this, with the odd game-breaking bug, that seems to send people into a wild rage about Bethesda games.

I really dont like bethesda games, Fallout and Oblivion especially.

I have numerous reasons but chief amongst them is they always seem like they've been released as a buggy mess and they always just feel so shallow- the combat in every Bethesda games is dire and the conversation system barely warrants the name.

Why do people interpret a lack of enthusiastic ball sucking as hate?
I'm not exactly in love with RPGs and you may whine as much as you like, that won't change. And when I call you out for being as annoying as social networks, you whine because of my 'hate'

Christ, enjoy your damn game and shut up about it. Why do you need the world's approval for that? (unless of course you aren't enjoying the game as much as you think you are and it's just your fanboy instincts that keep on playing)

OT: Umm... I havent played Fallout 3, but for Oblivion:

-enemies level up with you
-glitchy as hell (never attempt vampirism on the ps3 version)
-kinda boring
-character build unbalances
-telepathic guards

fallout was enjoyable.

oblivion was infuriatingly bland after the crazy awesomeness of morrowind. but shivering isles made up for that for the most part.

Nothing against Bethesda but I hate Fallout 3 and New Vegas, they're just so boring and clunky.

Fallout: New Vegas was fantastic, but that wasn't even made by Bethesda.
Apart from being made on Bethesda's engine with Bethesda's licensing and Bethesda's publishing? Na, they weren't involved at all. New Vegas looked dated, had a storyline that was about as immersive as a goldfish and had none of the post-apocalyptic feel that made me enjoy Fallout 3. It was dreadful.

Oblivion I liked. Not as much as Morrowind, but I liked it. Yeah, it wasn't as immersive as Morrowind, nor did it have as good a storyline or as quirky a feel to it, but it still had most of The Elder Scrolls' defining elements.

I've met one person in my entire life who has ever claimed to 'hate' Bethesda games, and that's because he's so far up Bioware's figurative arse he's popping out of their mouth.

I don't hate them, they're just not my thing. Different strokes, different folks etc.

a) The open world setup inherently leads to bad pacing, at least in every example I've seen thus far.
b) The utter lack of focus is crippling. Lots of content, but it's all paper-thin.
c) The dialogue is poorly written and the voice acting varies from mediocre to terrible.
d) The combat is utter pants, and there's always a lot of it.
e) The characters are uncanny-tastic and poorly animated.

Yeah... that'll do for starters.

That said, I'm not quite sure about what hate you are referring to. Bethesda games seem extremely popular, especially around here. You can't read five posts without stumbling across someone pre-emtively creaming their jeans over Skyrim.

Title explains it I want to know why I personally like them very much so why the hate? can you please tell me.
It is a matter of preference and opinion. Just because you like something doesn't mean other people do, too. Personally, I loved Fallout 3, but Oblivion was boring as hell. New Vegas was horrid, but that wasn't made by Bethesda.

New vegas wasn't made by the Todd Howard crew.

WHAT.

OT: Well, they are horribly glitchy, and quite weak on storytelling, and this is coming from someone with ~200 hours on both Fallout 3 and Oblivion.
I love their games, but they can easily improve.

I just have to say, for point c), Old World Blues for New Vegas had some of the best dialogue ever. Of all time. Those scientists made up for every mudcrab-fearing peasant or repeated conversation ever.
