Hi! Have you met me?

While I can see why people would like Oblivion I thought it was the most tragically dull and uninteresting game I have had the misfortune to play. That's without getting into all the technical problems.

Daggerfall - Good
Morrowind - Awesome
Oblivion - er wtf happened?
no, this is actually our first time meeting. hi. i found Oblivion to be a fairly good game, but i haven't played any other Elder Scrolls games, so i didnt compare it to them.

STOP WITH USELESS THREADS LIKE THIS.

HATERS WILL BE HATERS.

In a world with 7billion people, there are ALWAYS a lot of people who hate EVERYTHING, no matter how awesome it is.

Thing is I couldn't tell you exactly what was wrong with it compared to the older ones. Just felt off and clunky. The world just seemed far too barren and samey and I didn't enjoy the lore very much either. I never finished it, one of the few games I have ever abandoned completely.

Are you my clone? Because you seem to share my thoughts and beat me to post them far too often for any other explanation. And I can't be the clone, I have a belly button.

OT - I think maybe it's the bugs although I've never really had any issues with them. I can't say I've noticed more bugs in a Bethesda game than I have in say, a Total War game. Also some people still have a bee in their bonnet other that business with that Notch guy.

They don't.

You don't have to make stuff up just for discussion.

Personally I loved Oblivion. But yeah, the game did have:

A small amount of voice actors

Quite a few noticeable glitches.

A rather bland main story.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas were good games. But I always preferred the fantasy setting to the post apocalyptic setting in games. Not to mention Fallout 3's main story made it so you couldn't continue playing. (And yes I am aware of the DLC that allowed you to keep playing. But I returned the game long before that.)

The reason why people like them so much:

They are deeply flawed games that have mediocre main quests but, are filled with with ambition and extreme amounts of side exploration to do.

But I have a belly button too...

It appears we have a conundrum.

There's only one way to settle this...

I don't hate Bethesda games, but I am one of their biggest critics. I think that the games are truly great, but I've never been able to "get into" either Fallout 3 or Oblivion. My main problem is that the games tend to be ridiculously ambitious without the technology to back it up. Having a huge game world is great, but when that world is totally filled with bland environments, stiff, lifeless characters, and a selection of assorted oddities that break immersion, I often wish that they put more time into refining the game's various systems. Gameplay in particular is a huge problem for me, as it's stiff and unsatisfying in both games. Having said that, Skyrim will probably change my mind considering how mind-blowingly awesome it looks.

That was a differnt studio for NV. Bethdasoft had very little to do with the making of that game.

I didn't like Oblivoin much it was a watered down Morrowind with extra blandness, now FO3 is a complete joke the skill/level system and equipment are geared for a small 10 hour game, even with all the expansions there's just not enough customization/new equipment to keep the game going for 50 hours.

Bethesda games aren't so much hated as they're known for their fairly steep requirements in terms of patience and involvement. It doesn't matter how much critical acclaim a game receives, if it releases as a bug-riddled mess, the fans have a right to be concerned.

OP, if you're writing this after seeing someone in some other thread or forum write off Bethesda as shit developers, then you're just witnessing two facts:

1. people have varying tastes
2. people are comfortable with reductionist logic

Which is to say that I fully expect a BioWare fan to have gripes about Bethesda's system and vice-versa. It's fine, and it can be done in a respectful and civil manner. Of course, you also have your usual trove of asshats who enjoy trying to curb-stomp anyone who so much as disagrees with them.

My rule of thumb goes as follows. You, or someone else, claims Game X to be shit? Fine, that's your opinion. Can that claim be substantiated by anything other than variations on "I personally don't like Game X"? If not, there's no argument to be had and the naysayer has lost all credibility.

Follow that rule, and you won't care about whether or not Bethsoft is the object of hatred from other gamers. If Hines and Howard make up stuff that floats your boat, it's the only thing that matters.

The best thing you can say about Bethesda it that they seem to be improving.

Oblivion sets the baseline for the worst high-profile RPG ever made. Worst dialogues, voice acting and animation in a cookie cutter fantasy game that is broken on multiple levels: tedious combat, repetition everywhere and the worst leveling system ever devised.

Fallout 3 isn't so bad. It's better than Oblivion in every area, but still much worse than Bioware and Obsidian in the story department. Visuals looked dated before it came out. Taken as a shooter FO3's again worse than an RPS like ME2 (which still isn't good).

Skyrim appears to have nice graphics for a change and the dev quotes suggest they won't make the same mistakes from Oblivion.

I like Fallout, but I dislike both Oblivion and Morrowind for 5 reasons:

1. The feel of the game seems off to me, and it isn't very well balanced as far as classes go, it always seemed to me that it favors melee and magic much more than bow and arrow, which is my favorite weapon, so I feel cheated most of the time, since I don't feel I can play the game in the way I wanted to, and that seems wrong with an RPG.

2. This is an issue with almost all bethesda games: HORRIBLE VOICE ACTORS and If not that, the sentences seem fragmented, broken, and odd. And that's not accounting for some of the NPC's suddenly shifting their tone or even gets voiced by a completly diffrent person, it breaks all immersion.

3. This is not the biggest of my complaints, but it is mostly aimed at Oblivion, the interface seems so sticky.

4. Lack of options, yeah, I'm not going to win any favor with this one, I know, you can do a hell of alot of stuff in their games, I'm not trying to refuse that, but the things I want to do, I can't, theres so much potential some places and it just seems wasted alot of times.

5. This goes for all of their games based off of their gamebryo engien, the copy and pasting of enviroments is rediculous, I don't expect every single house to be made from the ground up, but atleast add a little more to each houses than a bit of diffrent loot. This goes for Fallout 3's metro mania as well.

Harsh. I actually really loved Oblivion. The story wasn't the most deep, complex, and original piece of work out there, but it was interesting enough for me to play through it several times. Sure, it was pretty buggy, and the npc characters didn't vary too awfully much from each other, but the sheer size and detail of Oblivion was enough to steal away days upon days of my life. I was totally fine with the leveling system other than the fact that Mehrunes Dagon's personal army of super powerful and overwhelmingly frustrating Daedra never stopped stomping my face in because I was above level 25 when I really got into the main quest.
