I have a 360 because it's easier to keep in contact with my friends in cyprus, but the PS3 is good for other reasons. one is not better than the other.

Most people can only really afford one, so they decide which one they prefer and stick with it. Then we get pissed when something comes out for the other we want, but then we get something they wanted, and flame wars ensue.

Two reasons. People like to argue for why they made the better choice, and the argument creates distance between the two audiences which gives a bigger feeling of unity, as the people in one group share a mutual dislike for the other group.

I'm not quite sure why XBOX360 captured the hearts and minds of most serious gamers, but it did, so I'm fine with that. I feel like if most people would have bought PS3 it might have worked out better, but I'm not TOO bitter about it

I'm going to continue to support playstation because Halo, Gears, etc have no appeal to me. Plus if I ever wanted to play one of the "great" Xbox games, chances are it will eventually come to PC.

When people have different opinions, they tend to argue. This is natural. It is the reason people fight, go to war, and kill one another. Your question is basically "Why do people who disagree argue?" Did you really think this topic through?

I own both a PS3 and a 360 and let me tell you right now. Neither one of them is a winner or a loser. If you have either console you should be wearing a huge grin and not care about what fanboys are raving about.

There are many reasons.

Debate bait, I have a friend who loves to flaunt their X-Box 360 knowledge to me so we can discuss which console is more powerful (PS3 FTW!!)

Troll bait, solely for the purpose of getting people angry.

I prefer this, the final one I can think of, it's simply someone asking people that know more about a subject, who better to tell you the best bits of a PS3 with the worse bit's of a 360 than a Sony fanatic and vice versa? With all the information given to you by the two sets of fanatics, you can research more thoroughly before selecting which console is better for you. this option also (mentally) removes responsibility for a person buying a console, if they don't like it, they have a selection of people to blame.
