It's part of the console wars. People wish to justify their choice of Console as the right one over the other guy and they will argue their consoles supeiority over the other. It's just blantly fanboyism.

Because if you want to play a game without waggling something, you have to choose one of the two.

People insecure about their choice, and want validation from other people?
If I could afford it I'd have both :p I think some people wanted but can't admit they can't afford both, and so need to give reasons why they didn't do so to remove suspicion of not being able to afford it, as if it's some kind of crime not to be able to afford more than one console.
It's like on Top Gear when they said "The first thing you ever hear a Porsche Boxster owner say is why they didn't buy a 911. There's only one." I think Richard Hammond said that.

I love the xbox 360, but I've never played the PS3, so I can't say which is better.
For games available compared to what I like playing, I'd say that the xbox 360 is better, but there are games on the PS3 that I would like to play.

As the argument in general, I find the idea to be childish.
Most of the people in the argument only take sides on the one that they have, or they have very little experience with the one that they hate.

i ask because on Like Totaly Awesome (a youtube video by sxephil) they had people arguing 360 vs PS3, and asked people what they think. this is THE most stupid question ever, because whenever it is asked people will just moan, troll, flame ect...

I have a 360 because it's easier to keep in contact with my friends in cyprus, but the PS3 is good for other reasons. one is not better than the other.

/rant

why do you think people keep asking this question, and do you think they should be punished?
When people have different opinions, they tend to argue. This is natural. It is the reason people fight, go to war, and kill one another. Your question is basically "Why do people who disagree argue?" Did you really think this topic through?
that's not the point, but easily misunderstood.

the point is not "why do people keep arguing about 360 vs PS3" but why people keep bringing it up. you cannot change a 360/PS3s mind by arguing. they'll just argue back.

The whole point of any argument is to change the mind of the person you are arguing with or at least have them acknowledge your opinion as equal to their own. Which goes back to exactly what I was saying before. People will always argue about the PS3 and Xbox 360 because neither side is willing to give the other side any ground on the matter. IF(and this is a big IF) people did come to some sort agreement on the matter, there will always be someone out there who would reject the agreement and therefore restart the war. It would be like both sides agreeing to ceasefire. Some idiot would fire his gun and the war would start up all over again.

Long story, short. It only takes one flamebait to light a stick of dynamite.
