Why do people like dubstep?

If you're having a hard time dealing with the fact that the music scene changes, and that your precious, narrow view of music is no longer "in",

This would be an okay answer to me if it wasn't for the fact that dubstep just seems to be a backing track of noise on a loop. My friend is a dubstep DJ and he keeps linking a song to me and saying listen to this its awesome. I try to listen to it and I can't because its just random noise.

I can listen easily to every other form of music from mozart to death metal but I have no understanding of how people can think dubstep is music. To me its about the same music level as a toddler hitting a pan with a spoon...

It totally confuses me. I wonder if I'm hearing the same thing that they are at times creepypasta style. :|

Go listen to Pachelbel's Canon in D. Then listen to any dubstep track. You KNOW which is superior. You know which required more talent to make. You know which would be put on a gold record and sealed in a vault to protect it from a nuclear apocalypse, and which.... would not be protected.

There is 10000x times more talent, heart, passion and beauty in Pachelbel's Canon than in any Dubstep track.

i also had similar thoughts when some people from my class were all over dubstep, and when i listened to it i simply asked "and the difference between this and the other techno music is?" then everyone went all douche on me saying that i suck, have no taste... blah blah... so on.
i mean sure i'm open to ELECTRIC MUSIC but techno is the other end of the galaxy (at least those songs they listen to) and one guy was even all over techno saying that "techno musicians" will be more remembered then other music style, well that won't work for one reason, bands and authors from the 20th century actually put something on the table, not just mash the bass button and here and there play with the volume, i mean hell i could probably put together some random techno junk it's not that difficult. besides what's fun in listening to over powered bass, lame lyrics sang by a half computerized woman's voice, anyway?
i'm not doing a hatespeech here don't get me wrong, i'm into the rock genre more i admit but that doesn't mean i can't listen to other things as well.
but i'll be honest i never noticed the slightest difference between techno tracks, at least what the class usually keeps repeating on a daily basis.

I've been spinning in clubs and producing music for 6 years and have been following Dubstep as a genre since it's inception.

When Dubstep was first introduced as a genre, no one would give it the time of day. It was simply a darker, slower version of Drum and Bass for the underground club scene.

As better and better artists took a stab at the genre, more people paid attention. The biggest break for Dubstep: Skrillex. He was one of the few artists that took the dark and moody nature of Dubstep and put a more mainstream accessible Punk-Agressive/Party flavour to it. When Skrillex exploded on the scene with a little help from Deadmau5's record label (which already had a stupidly popular following), suddenly Dubstep became common knowledge.

So in answer to your question, why do people like Dubstep? In my experiences spinning it at clubs, the vast majority do not like Dubstep as a whole. Only certain tracks that sound like Skrillex. Purists can argue with me all you want, but I've seen reactions on the dance floor. Public opinion is that the majority of Dubstep is crap, while the few that ARE good are amazing.

This isn't the first time that an electronic genre got over exposure. From 2007-2008, Club kids were all about French Electro House like Justice and the Ed Banger Crew. From 2008-2009, Club kids still had the taste of Electro in their mouths and branched out to acts like Deadmau5, Bloody Beatroots, Boys Noize etc. Then in 2009-2011, it was all about Afrojacks obnoxious Dutch Flavoured Electro House paraded by acts like Laidback Luke and Steve Aoki.

While I'm sure some people still talk about those genres, they don't talk about it like they used to. The same thing will happen with Dubstep. Once a genre becomes overplayed, some other gimmicky offshoot of a genre takes its place. It's just the way club tastes evolve.

Club music isn't about purity of an artform, it's about getting kids to let go on the dance floor. Whatever keeps the kids moving is the only thing a DJ or Producer needs to worry about. Purity is best kept away from the popular scene.

TLDR; Dubstep will come and go like many other popular genres that came before it. It's popular now, but it won't have the same impact in one or two years time.

I will admit it myself, most Dubstep is garbage and lazy, I have however went looking in the genre itself and found some really good songs. Dubstep is at it's best when it isn't about the WUB(removes 90% of dub) and isn't lazy, just sampling one noise and repeat.

Those songs are far in between but they are good, almost enough to dismiss the rest of the shit from the genre, almost.

i like electronic music which includes dubstep and i like alternative rock and i like pop to some extend oh and also jpop
i don't like country, jazz and most of metal

music should either evoke emotion (see anger,happiness,sadness, melancholy, peace) or be in conjunction with an activity (see swing music, most videogame songs, and the massively wide genre known as "dance")

step achieves none of these criteria, whilst also ruining the various songs it comes across (im talking to you whoever posted that butchered version of still alive.

It'l go away in due time, its gained very little traction, and whilst some elements may survive by being integrated into other genres such as house and techno(which has already happened to a certain extent), the movement itself will die down.

please leave it to the listeners if and which emotions are evoked by music
there are a number of dubstep tracks that give me goosebumps all over
same with a lot of other songs you probably wouldn't consider "music"

First, I want to introduce to you the fact that people exaggerate for effect. I don't literally think that just because a otherwise pleasant individual as yourself can enjoy dubstep, doesn't mean you are dumb.
Second, my point was also that I don't want to hear it everywhere, it's become so popular that they cram it into where it don't belong, like AC and Uncharted trailers.
Third, I still want it to disappear.

And finally, I didn't mean to insult anyone, well, execpt those who worship dubstep I suppose, although this thread fueled old hate for dubstep that came into play here. So I was myself kinda pissed off when I wrote that, which appearently pissed you off a bit, so I suppose it's my duty as a good citizen to apologize if you were offended.

Good things do happen with dubstep's sound, when you take it and try to grow it beyond a bass-line and a massive drop-- Very good things.

I'm all for doing away with trash that amateurs throw together in Ableton in 15 minutes and call music, but anyone who vehemently states dubstep can't make music at all is in denial or just plain ignorant.

I know a few of these tracks push genre lines pretty hard, perhaps even break them, but dubstep's influence on the above ranges from outright explicit to hovering around just in the background. And, personally, as a lover of a wide range of music, I think this is good shit. But maybe that's just me.

...I thought that was electronica...Did they change the name? Damn these kids now-a-days, changing the name of music genres just because they can use computers to make it sound slightly different. Back in my day we knew what musical genres we had and we considered ourselves damn lucky to have those. And that was when a parent could justify taking music away! We treasured our music, we did! We didn't go around re-naming our musical genres, no sir. We knew what metal was metal (at least until someone with brain damage decided to call his metal new) and we new what rap was rap (at least until the gangsters went and gangstered it up).

Right, not that old but dubstep just sounds, to me, like really slowed down electronica. Take some Electronica and put it on ridlyn and there's you sum dub-step.

OP: It's very easy to dance to, for one. Another reason is that it can help some people study. I'll usualy put on some Deadmau5 but turn it down whenever I'm coming up on exam weeks, and it helps me focus. As to number 2, see Deadmau5, especially when he has SOFI singing. How it became popular? Again, easy to dance to and if you find the right stuff it has moments of unpredictability, making your brain wonder "WTF did I just hear? I think I liked it."
