Why do people STILL bash FFX-2?

As a previous poster noted, it's also nothing but fanservice, pure and simple.
I'm not getting that at all, seeing as its the only FF game I ever played cause my brother got it for me, and I found it very enjoyable.

Well from my own personal experience, I got Final Fantasy X-2, played it, and fell in love with it.

About a year or so later, I finally got hold of Final Fantasy X, and... I just couldn't get into it. After Final Fantasy X-2, FFX was, to be honest, a bit of a let-down. The thing I loved most about FFX was the sphere grid, but the game itself just didn't appeal to me. I've never bothered completing it so I've not felt the story unfold first-hand, but it's never held my attention long enough to make me want to.

FFX-2 on the other hand, is one of my all-time favourite games.

Because it sucked perhaps? My dad who's a big FF fan never even bothered trying to finish this game.

I can see why people didn't like it after X, and I agree it wasn't as good as X, but I still enjoyed it.
The combat system was great and, really, combat is what you spend most of your time on in these games.
I enjoyed the sphere break mini game too, although I was upset they ruined Blitzball.
After the seriousness of X, I don't think X-2 was trying to take itself as seriously. With that mindset, I was able to have fun with it.

There are far worse games out there.

I can understand in a strict comparison to Final Fantasy X, X-2 is a completely different game, but why do people seem to use that as their sole base of opinion and justification for deriding FFX-2?

FFX-2 "haters" never seem to try and acknowledge X-2's merits as if it were a stand-alone game, it would be like people criticising Sonic the Hedgehog for no reason other than "it's not Mario".

Imagine if you'd NEVER played Final Fantasy X, and X-2 was your first introduction to the world of Spira. Is it really such a bad game, on it's own merits?

If people's opinion of a game is based on something that isn't THAT game (regardless of whether it's supposed to be a prequel, sequel, or remake) then I consider their opinion invalid.

If you're going to criticise a game, then criticise THAT GAME, don't criticise it with the mindset of "the sequel/prequel/remake of _____".
I have to admit the first 3-4 hours or so made me cringe (and I'm a girly girl), but then after that the dressphere job system was so awesome and the sphere tablets allowed for "mucho el customizo".
the plot wasn't completely awful and I liked the whole reintroduction of the aeons as well as their dark counterparts.
it was awesome seeing what happened to all the characters after X and Wakka naming his son after his dead brother... well I almost cried.
I loved FFX-2.
definately not the best one in the series but it had it's merits.
that and the whole big secret for acquiring 100% completion<3

Because you needed to be either hetero male or Lesbian to like it in certain obvious ways.

I am neither and the gameplay/story was extremely lackluster and just seemed like an excuse to get Yuna into skimpier clothing.

good for him...
All final fantasies try to do something different.
they can't appease everyone, nor do i want them to. I love that square and now squenix doesn't give in to what people want, otherwise they would churn out boring repetitive identical rpg one after the other.
FFXIII tried something different, people didn't like it.
I don't care I quite like XIII. X-2 is no different.
Some people will like it, some won't.
i personally don't like the new one XIV, but alot of people do, so that's their opinion.
just because your dad's a hardcore ff fan doesn't mean he's right.
I've played the FF series since I was 6 years of age, my first game being VIII (which i still love despite all the bitching people do about it), it doesn't mean I'm right either.
X-2 doesn't "suck". you want a game that "sucks"? Play mystic quest or Children of Mana *shudder*, then maybe you'll appreciate X-2.

I had to sign in just for this. So to start, I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan. I have at least one copy of every Final Fantasy from the original to 13, counting the Tactics games and Disidia.

So I have X-2, and I will admit there parts to it I like. The job system was pretty cool, and gave a nice break from sphere hunting (F'ing Sphere Grid), some of the music I liked. One of my favorite characters returned, Rikku (Since Auron was gone after Sin was no more). I even liked Paine. Now those things don't make up for the rest of the game. Story was carp, script was carp, the first half the game is boring mission based 'Collect that Dress Sphere!'. Why? Cause the game said so was really the only reason I got out of it.

While we are speaking on weather a game should on the merits of its prequel or what not...It should. The game is X-2 (hopes this is BB Code), and as such it should stem off the original story in some way, no? If they could have done that, then I have a feeling it would be a better game. Instead they finished X with the defeat of Sin and at the same time got rid rid of the role of summoners. The only real thing X-2 is playing off is the return to a world setting that raked in cash, with a sprinkling of familiar faces.

I thought I'd expound a bit more on my hatred for the FFX-2 Storyline while I'm waiting for the next episode of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt to buffer.

Final Fantasy X told a few stories, but to me there were three main themes running through it: Tidus' Daddy Issues, Auron's quest for redemption and (in my eyes actual main story) Yuna's quest to grow up and save the world. She was still a teenager in FFX and had lived in Besaid almost all her life. FFX told of her quest to save a people she didn't really know and the inevitable sacrifice that would come with it.

It ended with Yuna losing both her one remaining Father Figure (in Auron) and her lover (in Tidus), as well as numerous friends in her Aeons who sacrificed themselves to bring an end to it all. Sacrifice is perhaps the driving idea behind Yuna's quest in FFX. At first she is resolved that she will die in summoning the Final Aeon to bring the Calm, an act which she finds out would also turn one of her guardians into the new Sin. An alternative appears, and instead she gets to keep her life but loses a bunch of other stuff instead. It's sacrifice of a different kind.

Final Fantasy X-2, in my eyes, should have been Yuna coming to terms that Tidus is gone and there isn't always a 'Happily Ever After' ending, that sometimes people die and they don't come back - even in Spira. It should have shown her continuous growth as an independent character. In Final Fantasy X we saw her as an emotionally strong willed character. A bit ditsy at times, a tad naive and in need of help getting along, but strong regardless. FFX-2 switches that around - she turns into Action Chick physically but the entire game is spent pining after Her Man, catching onto anything - even incredibly flimsy things - which might indicate she can get him back.

FFX-2 represents nothing less than the systematic character destruction of Yuna, and the complete invalidation of FFX's ending. How can anyone call that a satisfying sequel?

It is a sequal though, FF and FF2 aren't sequals, FFX-2 is a sequal to FFX.

From what I remember of my short play through of this game it was just awful. I have to change my dresses to unlock the best dress, every fight?

The game also had no real connection to FFX, it wasn't like you had the same gang all running round looking to bring Tidus back. Where did Wakka, Kimahri and Lulu go? And where did this Payne (I think that was her name) come from? Why does she give a massive shit about Tidus?

I just thought they took one of my fav games ever, released some crap with "-2" after it, took out some people we knew and liked and stuck some random girl in.

I thought "I don't know what this is but it's not FFX-2", I know deny this games exsistance, so it doesn't tarnish my beloved FFX.

One, because it was the first actual sequel to a Final Fantasy game, and it wasn't good.

Two, they turned Final Fantasy into a 40+ hr long dress-up adventure.

Right,
I HATE the Story
HATE the Characters
HATE the Premise
HATE the LACK OF SUMMONS!!
HATE the sexist and Insensitive character design

However, despite this I Believe X-2 has the BEST ability system in an RPG.

Let me Explain:
--> You have total control on who learns what abilities
--> The Ability list isn't restricted by the Level Cap (Stares at KOTOR)
--> All characters can be specced to learn any ability combo
--> The Abilities were the most diverse I've ever used.

This gives TOTAL FREEDOM over how you want the characters to develop,
want to use guns? you can.
Want to use Blue Magic? Yep.
Want a healer? Of course.

Also the combat was an improvement on the series (pity that 12 fucked it up) and the sidequests added depth to the game.

So to summarize: Story was Shite, Gameplay was surprising.

You're referring to Yahtzee's comparison to AC:B I presume?
Actually no, I wasn't. I was unaware of any such comparison. Although now that you mention it, where would I find this?

I was reading some posts in the Thread about Square Enix sacking people responsible for FFXIV, and someone made a comment which inspired this little rantette.
:D It was my comment!!

I played it and it sucks, plain and simple.
The plot is weak (trying to find you-know-who only to be let down...), the characters are ridiculous (Sailor Moon transformations?wtf?) and the music nearly made my ears bleed. I have to admit that the combat system is fun, but that´s about it.

If I try to comparee it to its predecessor(s), X-2 looks even worse.

To this day, I have never played Final Fantasy X. However, I have played its sequel...and yes, it really is that bad.It just felt like a chick flick. And I hate those.
