Why do "realistic" games all feel the need to include the Desert Eagle as a weapon?

Games feature the Deagle for the same reason that films do, its incredibly cool and sexy, after all hand guns do have a pretty significant Freudian undertone. In reality of course its not a very practical hand gun for combat, I'd take a Five-seveN or one of the H&K USP's over it any day if my life depended on it.

Personally I'll stick with revolvers. Way~ more classy.
Again, another kindof unrealistic thing - revolvers aren't that great in real life... though I agree. Really classy, and awesome. And stuff like that.
Why aren't revolvers great in real life?
Small ammo capacity, long reload times, and awkward ammo storage. It's why you'll never see a revolver used by front-line troops.
But the dependability and ease of use makes it great for self defense.
Self defense? Yes. Front line use? I highly doubt it. Magazines are easier to carry, faster to reload, and they have a higher capacity. I imagine in a warzone, a few seconds reload time, or a few extra rounds could be the difference between life and death.
Well this part of the thread was initially about revolvers effectiveness overall. I'm also going to argue that if a firefight goes on for long enough, the revolver would be useful again. It would have to be a ridiculously long fight though. The kind of fights that I don't think ever happen. But if you run out of loaded clips for a pistol, the revolver would become quicker to load.

Again, this is a very unrealistic situation, but it exists.

Ever since Call of Duty 4 I have seen the Desert Eagle as a "bling" weapon. Even to this day I'm hoping for someone to make a model replacement for the Desert Eagle in L4D2. Goddamn it I want a revolver in that game.

Yes plenty of times, primariy rifles and shotguns though.

Theres no cross hair in real life.
No shit.

Trained policemen still miss 80% of their shots in a shootout.
They also don't use their sights 70% of the time they shoot. This is because they're police, they're not supposed to kill they're job is to arrest people. That's what they're trained to do. While being trained to shoot is almost undoubtably part of that, I question whether they're extensively trained for actual shootouts.

I don't find them cool looking, maybe it's the whole triangle aspect, but not for me.

Also, they're horribly inaccurate. And add SOCOM: Confrontation to the list.

Yeah, I've realized this quite a while ago, being a gun enthusiast. A Desert Eagle is not only low on capacity, excessive on power, way to heavy (even more than most heavy revolvers, which do not make great carry weapons) and they are way to spendy and unreliable. The .357 version (which is the only reasonable version of it) can only fire certain .357 ammunition, because it jams with bad ammo and cannot fire .38's, too.

It's a terrible gun. A Smith and Wesson 686 would be a much better substitute. I have a 686P (which holds 7 rounds, thats what the P means) and has enough power to satisfy all the idiots who know nothing about firearms.

I have fired one - it is very heavy for a handgun, has considerable recoil, a small magazine, and is very uncomfortable and bulky. The Desert Eagle was never designed to be used as combat pistol, it was more of an engineering challenge to see if a pistol could be designed that would actually fire a .50 cal round without breaking. Not a single police or military force issues it that I am aware of, and it is mostly used IRL for shooting competitions or hunting big game.

And yet here is a short list of recent games that include it:

Modern Warfare 1 and 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Grand Theft Auto IV
Counterstrike Source
Far Cry 2
Splinter Cell Conviction
Metal Gear Solid 4

Yes, I mad. I would much rather see other more common handguns, or a nice revolver
You consider those to be filed under "realistic games" huh?
IE: Games that claim to have a sense of realism to their combat... He could consider Peggle to be the most realistic shooter out there, but it's not claiming to be like these most of these are.

To me, the desert eagle just seems like lazy game design... "Let's have a badass pistol that does a lot of damage.

"How about the Desert Eagle!"

"Okay!!!!"

I couldn't agree more.

Because gamers like the idea of it.

In reality the Desert Eagle is produced by IWI and was designed here in the states. It gained huge popularity due to its large size, body cut, and varying finishes offered by the manufacturer. It's iconic looks and its reputation as a "hand cannon" are what makes it famous in popular media. This is why it is used in film and video game so frequently. In the real world however Desert Eagles are notoriously inefficient and strangely overpriced. There are numerous dangers and documented accidents that are considered standard malfunctions (which they shouldn't be).

In short the Desert Eagle is popular for its looks not its capabilities.

Bullet Tooth Tony: So, you are obviously the big dick. The men on the side of ya are your balls. Now there are two types of balls. There are big brave balls, and there are little mincey ****** balls.
Vinny: These are your last words, so make them a prayer.
Bullet Tooth Tony: Now, dicks have drive and clarity of vision, but they are not clever. They smell pussy and they want a piece of the action. And you thought you smelled some good old pussy, and have brought your two little mincey ****** balls along for a good old time. But you've got your parties muddled up. There's no pussy here, just a dose that'll make you wish you were born a woman. Like a prick, you are having second thoughts. You are shrinking, and your two little balls are shrinking with you. And the fact that you've got "Replica" written down the side of your guns...
[Zoom in on the side of Sol's gun, which indeed has "REPLICA" etched on the side; zoom out, as they sneak peeks at the sides of their guns]
Bullet Tooth Tony: And the fact that I've got "Desert Eagle point five O"...
[Withdraws his gun and puts it on the table]
Bullet Tooth Tony: Written down the side of mine...
[They look, zoom in on the side of his gun, which indeed has "DESERT EAGLE .50" etched on the side]
Bullet Tooth Tony: Should precipitate your balls into shrinking, along with your presence. Now... Fuck off!

Mmm, because it's cool is my best guess. It's used in a lot of video games as that ''bigger, stronger pistol'' or ''magnum''. :p
There are so many other alternatives for a powerful handgun: .357 revolvers, .44 revolvers, Colt .45s, etc, all of which are more common IRL than Desert Eagles
Yes, but Desert Eagles are a lot easier to use in terms of combat.

Try reloading a revolver quickly.

1. Yes. And I can say the last thing i was thinking was "get into a proper firing stance!"

2. You seem to still think so.

3. Let's start shooting at eachother. You are going to take cover first, and fire second. No one is going to take a proper firing stance, bring the gun up, and stand out in the open. People miss. A lot. I would rather have a larger magazine and the ability to reload than not. Again, this is why no one uses revolvers anymore.

Okay, for one, CSS isn't new. The first version of CS was released around 2000, and CSS was released in 2004 I think.

zombies, near anarchy, a world where everyone is either a terrorist or counterterrorist, a world where you are invisible if you hide in a shadow in the middle of a hallway, and giant robot stealth action game are realistic? :p

that leaves you this:
Modern Warfare 1 and 2
Far Cry 2

And that's only because i never played Far Cry 2.
Modern Warfare 1&2 (Especially 2) can't be called realistic. How did America's defence systems that should be even more advanced seeing has they're in the future, get easily taken out by an EMP? How did America get invaded by Russia due to one American going on a rampage, without any negotiations whatsoever? I won't bother getting into how unrealistic #1 is.

Oh yea, and Far Cry 2, that's one of the least unrealistic in the list, but that isn't saying much. You can buy guns in the middle of the jungle, in a random house, with a 1990's computer! Not to mention their idea of malaria is to have a strange design over the screen at random intervals, or to be used has a time skip for big plot events.

So yea, not a single game on the list is realistic. But putting that aside for now, I don't see why you find it so annoying. The gun exists doesn't it? So why can't they find it? In only three of those games are you given it that I know of. You can buy it in Far Cry and CS, and you get given it at one very, very small point in Modern Warfare. It's a suitable replacement until they can programme a Raging Bull into their future games.

As far as I know Counter Strike did it first and then everyone jumped on the desert eagle wagon. I guess it's because of diversity. You need some strong pistols with less ammo and weaker pistols with more ammo, then pistols with high rate of fire etc.

its included because the idea of a hand-cannon is cool. Plenty of pistols fire small bullets (9mm's, .38's) but putting a gun with fires bloody huge bullets mixes things up a bit, and while it may be impractical in real life, in a videogame it's pretty badass

Yea, the Raging Bull in Rainbow 6: Vegas was way cooler than the DE.
Ya god damn right!
