Why do so many people on the internet like to characterize Japan as sex-crazy?

It bugs me a lot. I had a hard to trying to get this question out, but seeing jokes on this site and Cracked, as well as a few of my ignorant friends spouting has spurned me once more to try to ask the question, hopefully in a manner that is to be taken seriously, considering the subject matter that will be brought up. (I have my doubts about that, even on the Escapist...)

So... how about it. Why does everyone think they're all sex-crazy when that's definitely nowhere near the extent which everyone thinks? (Though this perception is NOT helped by the cultural-dissonance on how both the West and East view sexuality).
Speaking as someone that lives in Japanese society, it's a really hard issue to explain.

Sex is everywhere in this country. I mean, seriously, everywhere.

I can't tell you how shocked I was with the number of porn stores in this country, particularly in bigger cities like Akiba, Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo, etc.

To cut a long story short, I'd say it's what you coined at the last sentence - it's because their idea of sex, sexuality and sexy is completely different to the west. For instance, a great many Japanese women wear short skirts. They don't wear it so much because they think it's super sexy. The do it because it's the social norm. And yet, all of us western men go wild over it, because very few women in the West wear skirts the way they do. And yet, unlike the west, they don't often show their cleavage so much. It's just totally different.

I will say that Japan uses sex to sell products MUCH MORE than the west. I'm not saying the west is conservative, but seriously, just look up some of the adverts from the highly successful group AKB48.

I mean, seriously, this is just a candy advert!

In Akihabara, about 30% of stores are selling AKB48 gear. There are some stores, which used to be video game stores, which are now completely dedicated to selling DVDs and photos of AKB48 members. I mean, I know you have famous singers in the west like Beyounce, Justin Bieber, One Direction, etc, but do you see stores on the highstreet dedicated to photos of them in bikinis or shirtless outfits?

Perhaps its also the fact that Japan has the second biggest porn industry in the world.

It's ironic that Japan has been having a decreasing birthrate for around 3-4 decades now. From what I've heard, Japanese couples don't actually have that much sex.
This surprises me.

In my last year of university, we had a few girls from Japan in our class (Sweden here). From what they told me, the ideal woman is shy and cute, and that equality does not fucking exist.

One of these girls became my pseudo-girlfriend/FWB (because we knew she would go back to Japan in a year), and that ideal was definitely noticeable, she didn't dare to take what she wanted in bed like other partners I've had. It was not as bad as Hentai/Jap porn, with the "unwilling" whimpers.

But anyways. Yeah people characterize japan as sex crazy mostly because the western world is uptight about sex. It really is. What's the big issue over it? (Pre STD, or major STD time anyways). Especially with protection you're just having a good time.
I'm not sure I agree with this. Actually, I think the truth is that Japan is actually more uptight about sex in many ways. This might seem strange from what you can see in their media, but Japan is still a very conservative country.
As far as Women are concerned: Seems to me that everything showing legs is A-OK but exposing much of your upper body is not.
A friend of mine studied in Japan for a year. She was walking around with a few Japanese friends, wearing a top with spaghetti straps. Many people in the street were staring at her like she was a god damn alien. Turns out her friends were even embarrassed because she was walking around like that, showing so much of her skin. This was not Tokyo however. She was studying in Hikone, a moderatly sized city. Its different in Tokyo but on the whole, the Japanese are much MUCH more conservative with "real" sex or attraction than any western country. Looks like they try to just ingore sex and hope that it works itself out.

***I LIVE IN JAPAN RIGHT NOW***

I think it's partially because things that seem extremely and blatantly sexual to us aren't, and things that seem inappropriate to us aren't to them. Extremely short skirts, even to the point where you can see a girl's panties when she sits down? That's just fashion. If there is a sexual aspect to it, you're supposed to pretend that there's not. Which is why you end up with huge girl groups all dancing around in insanely skimpy outfits in a way that's "not sexual" but clearly is, and that sort of gives the Japanese a rep for being sexual.

HOWEVER that Japanese are into monsters raping school girls and crap is ridiculous. Most Japanese people don't watch hentai, nor do they read sexual manga, and if you talked about it they'd look at you like you were a pervert (unless you were with the right group of guy friends). They don't talk about sex, although affairs aren't as big of a deal in Japan. That being said, they DO have a penis festival where they carry around huge cock'n balls statues and have penis Popsicles that you can buy. So I don't think the perverted side to the Japanese is entirely made up. I also don't think they're any more obsessed with sex than we are. But MAN they love penises. Seriously, young boys (elementary school) want to touch my crouch, talk about my penis, and even just yell penis for no reason.

In my opinion, the things they are conservative with are just different than the things we are conservatives with. And it depends on where you live, that's true. I think part of it is that they don't feel the need to show off their breasts because frankly, they don't have them. They just approach sex differently than we do. The, "don't talk about that" mentality isn't so much the Japanese view on sex at it is the Japanese view on everything.

Yes, this is very true. It's all about the legs in Japan. The funny thing is, they don't think short skirts are that sexy. Like the west, where women show a bit of cleavage so often it's considered a very normal thing; in Japan, it's totally normal for women to show lots of leg. It had my and my foreign friends excited every time we walked down the goddamn roads of Kyoto, but Japanese men didn't see anything remotely racy about it.

It's a shame. My Japanese girlfriend is an amazing woman, but she doesn't wear skirts like most women in her countryland :(

I don't know if they're more conservative in that respects; just more that things are 'different'.

Indeed, women are supposed to be more desirable if they're shy and cute. Whilst I don't mind 'cute', 'shy' just pisses me off.

I've dated a few Japanese women, and the shy ones are a nightmare. You literally have to do ALL the talking on a date. It's like talking to a brick wall. But it's hard because you feel like they aren't interested in you (because they won't engage in conversation to any major degree), and you're the one constantly expected to make conversation.

Contrary to what you said about your friend though, I've heard from many other foreigners that most Japanese women are secretly absolutely crazy in bed! 'Sex mad' even. I've only slept with one so far, my current GF, and she supports this. She's not extravert or anything, but man, when she wants it, she isn't subtle about it, put it that way.

Because they all come from cultures where human sexuality is incredibly repressed and demonized as being morally wrong?

Sexuality has always been a positive and even celebrated thing in Japan, less so though after the American occupation after WWII.

Google the Ososo Matsuri (Vagina Festival) if you think I'm not serious.

Well, she did open up more later (heh, opened up) and became more active in the sex.

It's not just guys either. Lots of women here are preferring to stay single as long as possible. Or an increasing number are looking for foreign boyfriends.
That's got to be the biggest "Fuck you, dad!" they can do. XD

If Japanese women even thought like that. I dunno. ._.

Because a lot of people on the internet get their knowledge of Japan from video games and anime?

It would be like learning of Australia by watching Crocodile Dundee.
Or America from Grand Theft Auto. Seriously though I get a bit tired personally of the 'everything in Australia is going to kill you' meme coming from American's (the land of bears, racoons, cougars and Texans).

Americans. Classy? Classy is word I'd ascribe to brits, I associate America more with the stumming of banjo strings... and gunfire, lots and lots of gunfire.
You think us drunken Brits are classy? LOL!!!!!!!

That's really fascinating because it adds further evidence to the idea that people enjoy doing things that are "off limits." E.g. In the UK alcohol is popular among teens because its taboo for teens to be drinking. Same thing with sex. Perhaps in Japan, if sexuality really is that common place then it doesn't seem taboo and so people don't get the same rule breaking buzz from it.

It's plain, old fashioned, racism. That's all.
Come on now. Drawing conclusions on a group based on what you see and hear about them is not racism. Its not very smart to base you entire thinking of people based on just what you see even more so when you don't live there but ignorance and racism are two different things. When I hear people from other countries talk about americans in a bad light I don't think racism (not that american is a race but you get the picture) I just realize most of them are just basing that conclusion off what they have seen and heard about americans. It's human nature to do things like this. A survival instinct.

Honey Boo Boo is a reality t.v. show about overweight rednecks who make their youngest daughter enter beauty pageants. It's supposed to be funny, I guess, but the few times I've watched it I felt like one of those ass holes who point and laugh at animals at the zoo. I don't really get the appeal, but apparently someone watches it. It's one of those "look how horrible these people are" shows. I do feel bad for the daughter though, she's basically been made into a laughingstock.
