and that makes it seem like a slice of life show with things that, in the context of say sheldon not understanding social cues or howard being a twat, can be funny.
and of the three massively nerdy guys at my school (me, one of my friends and basically a more social sheldon) we all like it.

Nerds are just not funny in real life. Depicting them as funny using nerdisms isn't funny. The best jokes in the show is when they interact with normal people. Stick to that and without using "nerd" references, it's comedy gold.

Oddly I find that some drama shows have better humor than today's sitcoms.

I find "dramedy" shows are more watchable. They don't the pressure of having to cram in the funny like comedies do, the jokes are funnier. When I watch a sitcom, it just feels like that awkward person who is trying desperately to be funny.

Oh god, it's so not that funny >> To be honest, I love the concept of the show; a bunch of nerds brought to life in a way that non-nerds can relate to their characters. But in terms of how it's actually been made, I think they've just missed the mark a little in terms of execution of that concept.

Problem with this show is the same problem most American TV shows have and have had for a while. American TV is 100% about advertising dollars based on viewer numbers. So shows are developed strictly on the basis of how many viewers they are expected to get. Subject and quality and smaller then worth it fan base are irrelevant.

So every show ends up being an obnoxious full of itself steaming pile of pretentious that is insulting to ones intelligence. Don't even get me started on reality tv garbage.

Thank god for channels like Science, Learning, Discovery, History, Current, Bio, BBC, NHK.

Honestly? It sets back the image of the "stereotypical nerd" by about twenty years. It makes me sick. Especially when it doesn't even show them properly playing games. It makes no fucking sense!

That only works in memes and sometimes Family Guy or American Dad. Sometimes.

I think you hit it right on the head there.
Honestly, the show is written for and by people who have zero knowledge of whatever geek/science topics they happen to touch on. The writers don't know what they're talking about, and are basically just banking on the fact that the average layman will be wowed by whatever geek jargon they can pack into the dialogue. It's really the exact opposite of a show for nerds.

It's poor script-writing; they don't bother to research any of the nerd-content that they drop in for cheap laughs.

Huh. If that was re-shot to flow better without the laugh track I'd much rather watch it than the 'proper' version. I find BBT to be humorous enough without feeling forced to laugh.

Hey, we do come out with damn good shows on occasion. House started amazing and is still decent, Psych is pretty good and funny, and Avatar: The Last Airbender may be the best cartoon I've ever seen (and The Legend of Korra is looking to be just as good).

For the most part, though, as much as I hate the whole "it's America" statement... you are dead on with that.

The quality of our average TV show leaves much to be desired.

Simply put. I've seen about 20 minutes total of it due to hanging around in Gamestop where they constantly show it and it was cringe worthy, it was so bad.
I don't get why people like it.
To me, it was just an annoying sitcom playing on stereotypes of nerds.

I can't hate what I've never watched... but odds are, going by the clips seen in this thread, I wouldn't like it. I just don't like sit-coms in general. Also, those nerds are stereotypes. While there are "nerdy" intellectuals, there are plenty of other intellectuals who are perfectly normal people.

Also, the "nerds" on that show seem to be the worst kind: Sneering, over-confident in their intellectual abilities and utterly immersed in hobbies.

Don't get me wrong - I'm big fan of science. I love science. But I wouldn't like to be around the people shown in that show. Most scientists are perfectly normal people.

A laugh track is the simplest way of saying your audience is full of idiots. Why? Because the show needs to remind you the jokes are "funny". That may be why a lot of "nerds" dislike this show. Also the characters are pretty over-the-top and not very flattering to certain "nerd" or "geek" styles. It essentially is corporate TV attempting to capitalize on a subculture by popularizing it through a sitcom proxy, and horribly mangling the culture itself with canned laughs and bad jokes.
I just don't like it because the laugh-track sitcom days should be over by now. Why? Take out the laugh tracks and see how much dialogue the show really has, then tell me those writers deserve money for that.

I personally love the show Big Bang Theory, but some nerds I have spoken to, when I mention the show, show utter contempt for it. Why is it? I think it's a very funny show that depicts nerds in a fairly positive light, despite all the jokes. Is it because it's a popular show that give sit a sour taste?

Nerds? I think that most people believe in it, spite not being into science themselves. I don't really believe in it, because I am Christian.. yet I wouldn't hate it nor rage against people who do. It's their beliefs and I respect that overall.

In fact, it makes me ponder about the World.. leading to new questions thus making me appreciate life and free will you know? But yeah, because some people are very closed minded and anything you say that they disagree with- they'll go crazy over the issue. Not really cool to do, but they can't handle how others feel toward a subject.

This is about the TV show not The Big Bang Theory....Read the post not just the title. Honest mistake!

I've got mixed feelings about it, honestly. I'm neither a great fan nor a great hater of the show.
It doesn't offend me that it's a comedy about nerds, I freely admit, heck one of my favorite things about nerd culture is that nerds are hilarious (and not always intentionally). Some of the jokes the show has are great, and as has been said, the show does fairly well at casting nerds in a positive light.
However, the more irksome aspect of the show is when it does get somewhat lazy about its jokes (like most comedy shows do, occasionally) and then it does seem just like laughing at nerds. For example, in the link that was posted above from the laugh track removed (for the record, I don't think it really counts against the show that it's awkward without a laugh track) the first line of the video is "My mom just sent me my old N64. *laughtrack*", which is really not a joke on any level deeper than "I'm a nerd, haha"

In short:
Jokes about nerds being funny - great.
Jokes that run as "haha, he's a nerd" - not so great.

I agree with you that referencing as the only way to get a laugh is usually annoying but I think Scott Pilgrim did it pretty well...Maybe less so in the movie but in the comics i thought it was tasteful.
