Because (and that applies to all american sitcoms):
If you need a laugh track running in the background to get a joke across/make the audience laugh, your jokes are JUST. NOT. FUNNY.
Also you probably think your audience is retarded, so you need to point at the "funny" part in the most obvious way.

...god I hate sitcoms. *cpt. Obvious*

I personally like Big Bang Theory but the humour is predictable. That said, it is less contrived and patronising than most sitcoms.
And to the poster who said 'being British make you a fan of Doctor Who', I think disliking Doctor Who should be punishable. Not by death er se...(unless someone activly HATES it)...but at least they should have the same limb broken by the BBC once a year.
Let them pick the limb though, we're not savages...

It's cheesy b.s that's no more technologically themed than the next shitty big network sitcom.

Meh. I love the show. Big Bang Theory and HIMYM are the only sitcoms I would watch. I think there are lot of people getting a little over sensitive in regards to the 'nerd' portrayal in the show. I know people who are similar to the characters, including myself. I don't find it condescending at all.

Cause it's an (by and large) unfunny show. If I'd laughed, I'd enjoy it, but just spouting geek references isn't my idea of humor. I don't loathe it, but I was unimpressed when I got season 1. Didn't live up to all the hype.

I like it, but the laugh tracks are just plain annoying (in any show that uses them), my only real annoyance is the fact i watch it to the american timetable with all the big gaps inbetween episodes (especially after xmas! like a month or 2 before tv goes back to normal), it sort of makes me wish i had stuck to the british timetable, we don't have the gaps inbetween we just have it once a week, but the again you guys are a series ahead usuaully.

I stopped liking it halfway through season 2 when leanords doctor girlfriend disappeared with no explanation. I didnt stop watching until the last episode of season 2 when i realized every character was an unlikable jerk.
That's why everyone said It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia was funny, though.
I never saw that show though it sounds like i wouldnt have liked it anyway. The thing about me is i over analyze every show i watch and pick apart what i hate about every character until its nagging me every scene they're in. With Big Bang they were all such blatant pricks i was turned off the series.

It seems like something written about nerds, rather than by nerds. And it's a little bit patronising.
And I just don't think the show's that funny.
This. Plus, if you are an actual theoretical physicist (like I am), some of the mistakes are quite jarring, since the lead is portrayed as a bit of a wonder boy. I only watched the first episode, but in the first 5 minutes they made a mistake so big they really already lost me as an audience...
Also, as always, smart people need to be stereotyped as asocial losers apparently, otherwise people might get intimidated or something. It comes across as 'too easy'.

If then you try and watch it, the unfunny jokes get really under your skin and no one good line can save the show. Friends was not that funny most of the time, but it didn't bother me that much, which is why I'd still watch it for the few funny episodes.

It's a sitcom. I fucking hate all sitcoms. Which is why I like How I Met Your Mother. It's a sitcom made for people that hate sitcoms.....somehow.

There's a lot of little things. The reliance on stereotypes that attempt to paint nerds in a very, very broad stroke, or the general idea that we're some how socially inept.

More than anything else though, its the laugh track. I don't need to be told what's funny. If your work can't stand on it's own two legs, it can't stand, period.

A lot of the time, you'll see a load of math on their whiteboards, none of it makes any sense.

That I understand, but I'm just talking about simply not liking it. I'm talking about specifically nerds who have a loathing hatred for it, as though it is one of the worst things to blight television.
I think everyone hates stereotypes of themselves, the characters of BBT feel like they go beyond that at points, to the point of caricature. It's not 'hey, this is life like really smart aloof people live it' it's more along the line of 'this is how an amplification of most people stereotype scientists and geniuses and it's all condensed down into a few people'. It's more insulting than funny, there's a very small number of people who could sit down and say 'hey, that's just like my life' and laugh for that reason. But with BBT it's 'here are smart people, laugh at how different they live their life from us!'
i agree with FFHAuthor, to me it feels like they are laughing AT us who are nerds or geek instead of WITH us who are nerds or geeks. and im not even HALF as nerdy as they guys on BBT.

I where negative against Big Bang theory at first, the litte i had seen of the show seemed to be just making fun of Geeks/Nerds/fanboys/etc, and the show seemed straight-faced about it (meaning it seemed like you where supossed to look down on these guys).
But as I watched the show I found that the show makes fun of us geeks but equally to the attraktive, "normal" folk. I fell in love with the show after the first 5 episodes and I have watched every episode many times.

First, it hits a bit too close to home. My best mates are in order: An experimental physicist, an electrical engineer and a programmer.

Second, it just feels patronizing.

Because it is in the same time slot as Community, which is the much better show.

Yeah, I even make TV watching competitive. God help me.
Competitive? it can't be that, there's no competition: Community is better than Big Bang Theory. period.

OT: I watch BBT but it's been getting worse every season. I don't know how much longer i'll keep watching it. There are way better shows out there now.

because their audience laughs at every sentence and half the jokes are just technobabble the average person wouldn't understand.

also stereotyyyypes
Pretty much this, my friend got me to watch the first episode yesterday. It was OK but definitely not as amazing as he made it out to be. Apparently it gets better as it goes on and judging by the first episode I'm inclined to agree, but that's setting the bar quite low.
