Why do some people correct others?

I agree with SecretTacoNinja, I actually feel discomfort when I see things that could be corrected (although mine spreads to attitudes, political opinions, musical taste and most of everything else). Of course this means I'm rather irritating to be around but I swear I don't correct people to feel superior or to wind them up. It's more to do with the truth, if I see or hear something that simply isnt true (bush was great, hannah montana has talent etc) then I have an almost irresistable compulsion to correct it.

I inflict the same measure of correction on myself (I've re-written this post about 6 times) and happily accept other peoples corrections/comments, mainly because any corrections or new information improve my knowledge as a whole. Hopefully if people accept corrections in that spirit then its all OK.

If people don't take enough pride in what they post to run it through a spell checker before they make it public, they deserve everything they get.

Unfortunately, you can't learn where to put the ' mark in casual conversation unless you are actually capable of seeing letters.
Which would be awesome. I learned how to type on WoW.
Sad but true.

Now I have to go spray blood out of my ears in rage.
I learned partly from runescape, lol

Then I took a computer class in my freshman year at high school and now I type anywhere from 40-90 wpm.

YOU ARE WRONG MY FRIEND. WRONG.
Capitalizing every letter of a word is barbaric and "WRONG" is not a sentence. You hypocritical churl!
I AMZ TEH BARBARIC!!!!!1!111!!! AWWWARRRAWR!!!!!! :translate: I find your previous statement to be a gross, misjudged, and highly uncalled for analysis of my syntax whilst I was attempting to make a point. Good day, sir.
Good day to you as well, sir.

If people correct me a lot I just answer back in some bizzare mix of txt 1337 and kitteh english.

I honestly hate when people use correcting someones spelling as some sort of "argument" in a discussion. dunno if they think like this

I spell better than you = I am smarter than you = I am right you're wrong.

I would be suprised if the majority of people here didn't spell better than me, after all the majority of people here are from english-speaking countries, and in not. I dare them to write in their second language as flawlessly as they do in english.

I only see correcting fit in extreme cases where the corrected text is almost unreadable. or if the misspell/typo change the meaning of the sentence.

People correct other people because some (read: most) people are very, very stupid. If left unchecked, their rampant stupidity will overwhelm any and all rational thought and eventually leave us all as nothing more than gibbering idiots.

I correct people when they're wrong, so they won't be wrong next time, thus rendering the world a marginally better place for all mankind.

As long as you're not a dick about it. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Insecurity at the end of the day. Just like every other internet community, you can guarentee that the majority of its members are people with little or crap social lives, and don't feel comfortable with themselves to socialise in the real world, or haven't developed decent social skills. This is a gaming website for god sake, doesn't that say enough?!

People only do it on this site so they can pretend they are better than the rest of the internet.

Because allowing imperfection is just as bad as being imperfect yourself. If you see someone being murdered, and you don't stop to save them, then you're (probably not as bad but) evil.

If you've been on this site for more than five seconds you may have noticed people correct each other's spelling and grammar whenever they see fit.

I'm not one to do it myself, but apparently everyone else on here is. Now, I'm not saying it's a bad thing. It's a good thing infact, as long as your not a dick about it, though I'm sure that rule applies to most things.

The question I ask is this: Why do people correct others? It's not like they have to, they're doing it voluntarily, so there must be a reason behind it.

[Note: Yes, search bar nazi's. I did search, but the threads I found seemed to outline the fact that it was a bad thing. They didn't specifically ask why people do it.]
I enjoy finding errors, and saying how to correct them (in fact).

EDIT : Ninja'd. And I missed a few. Now I feel dumb.
