Why do some people correct others?

If you've been on this site for more than five seconds you may have noticed people correct each other's spelling and grammar whenever they see fit.

I'm not one to do it myself, but apparently everyone else on here is. Now, I'm not saying it's a bad thing. It's a good thing infact, as long as your not a dick about it, though I'm sure that rule applies to most things.

The question I ask is this: Why do people correct others? It's not like they have to, they're doing it voluntarily, so there must be a reason behind it.

[Note: Yes, search bar nazi's. I did search, but the threads I found seemed to outline the fact that it was a bad thing. They didn't specifically ask why people do it.]
OCD.

11+23 = 36

I hate it when people don't finish their senten

Only one 's' in yours, you stupid, stupid twat.

I like it when people correct spelling and grammar in something small and twatty. The fact they feel the need to nitpick something rather than come up with a retort to the thread at hand generally makes me feel all nice and superior, 'cos I know they've lost.
A: Fuck you.
B: Read the original post, where that flaw does not exist.
C: After doing so, realize that Snuggles is actually a friend playing a silly prank.
D: Don't be such a dick in the future. Or, at the very least, check your facts first.
E: Because I absolutely cannot stress this enough: fuck you.
See Max, thats why I freaking love you.

Yes. I did leave a few in there for people to correct.

I wasn't aware we still spell Nazi with a capital N though.
Technically, it isn't a word but an acronym. Seeing how it developed an infamous meaning in this noun form, I'd say you can capitalize it. At least, I do.

I can think of three reasons:
1. Pepole are really anal about proper spelling, grammer, etc.
2. They want to bring the other person down
3. the errors interfere with being able to understand

I will do it, for a few reasons, the most notable being if its appalling to read (instead of just a few mistakes). Or if I am arguing with someone, then I do it, I highlight I did it, and point out they can't win because I had to make their post make sense.

I try not to... but it's a compulsion! It's hard to look at bad punctuation and grammar.

... but correcting others is definitely a quick way to make yourself come across as a d-bag. There's really no nice way to do it.

Analyzing. You know, thinking about it, I realize WHY it is so offensive to see misspelled words. THERE ARE DOZENS OF ADD-ONS FOR EVERY WEB BROWSER THAT IT MAKES NO SENSE TO SEE THEM. Even IE has one! There is no excuse, unless the INTERNET doesn't recognize the word...
You can get ADD-ONS for INTERNET EXPLORER?!

Truly, my lack of knowledge in regards to the interwebs knows no bounds.

Becaue, as far as I'm concerned, people can spell correctly or go home.

It's called OCD.

The other day I couldn't watch a guy do a blind run of Silent Hill because wasn't doing it perfectly. Same thing with spelling. Bad grammar and spelling almost physically hurt me.

Putting that aside, bad grammar doesn't belong here. Is it really hard to capitalise your 'i's and say 'you're' instead of 'your'?
In my case, very much this. I'm a horrible grammar Nazi in real life as well, so it's bound to carry over to here.

or your just an asshole if you tell them it all not politely

Frankly I dont care about peoples grammatical errors unless its so bad I cant even read. When thats that case at least 4 other people most likely already commented on it so I wont bother. I cant say my grammar is perfect but if people start correcting me on minor typos they can just go fuck themselves.

I sometimes correct people, even though my own spelling is not at all perfect at times. I am thoroughly annoyed when I see a new topic coming up, where the author seemingly had an idea and wanted to scribble it down before he loses his thought.
If you are interested in people's opinion, at least show some respect and put some effort into your post. If it is illegible, which fortunately does not happen often here, I try to make a humorously disguised sarcastic comment about it.

If it's just a small error in the OP or title, sometimes I point it out in a nice, caring way, or PM about it and gently ask it to be corrected.

Also, defiantly is not the same as definitely. Their and they're, and your and you're, have different meanings. Even though I do not usually point out these mistakes, I do get slightly agitated by them. Never much to the point of showing though.

All in the quest for common knowledge and civility.

Well I'm often wrong about a lot of things, but if I correct someone else t will only be about something that they will likley repeat.

My thoery is it is all about the post counts. Some people lack the basic intelligence to make a relevant post to a thread so they have to copy and paste "learn how to spell noob" as often as they can. Since we all know your post count is in direct relation to the size of your penis. Just like they have to post they reported a post or thread or telling people to use the search button. It is too bad the forums don't have a code that would subtract 1 post count instead of adding one for everytime posted something like that without adding somethng else to the thread.

I correct people whenever I can because I hate people being wrong. But I do let some things off. Like Tales of Golden Sun's post. I think he meant dyslexic instead of dyslectic.

If someone gets something wrong, they learn it very quickly. And very loudly.

I think I might eventually shout an American to death about spelling colour wrong. I do worry about these things you know.

OK... Just to minimise [note the English spelling] threads like this in the future, I shall now give a very short lesson in English (Primarily apostrophe usage).

You're = You are.
'Your' is possessive and refers to something that belongs to the person you're (<--- take note) talking to.

They're = They are.
'Their' is possessive and refers to something that belongs to the people you're also referring to.
'There' is a noun, meaning the place that you're referring to.

It's = It is
'Its' is possessive and refers to something that belongs to the thing you're also referring to.

For all names it is slightly different and the apostrophe comes before the 's' when its possessive (e.g. Bob's fridge).

And on a slightly more light-hearted note, DYSLEXICS UNTIE!!!!
