Dunno. I'm sure Freud would have a lot to say about it if he were here. But really, why do we like anything we like? Who says this has to be psychological? Maybe in some cases it is, but it might be that one likes what they like for the same reason they enjoy eating onions or whatever. Freud liked to talk about how everything mundane related to sex, what if everything sexual relates to the mundane?

I always assumed it had some connection to things such as exposure at a young age.

Society itself is the problem. The majority might share an opinion, and everything that falls outside that opinion is a fetish. In reality, if you were to count the number of people who were into many of the different fetishes out there, you'd end up with some pretty big numbers. It's not that fetishes are weird or different, it's just that society as a whole has a set-in-stone guide to what is normal, and everything that deviates from that in the slightest way is seen as... yeah, you get my point.
I only like sex when it's really rough, hooked up with a guy last night who whipped me with his belt after he took it off, made me start thinking about S&M stuff but I don't know if i could go that far. I love internet anonymity.

Freudian thinking is just whacked on the subject though. Like a lot of Freuds ideas it stems from a sexual desire for ones mother *Gasp*. Ok to be fair it isn't the incestuous desire for a mother, but the physical differences between mother and son. They are created the moment you see your mother naked and realise that her penis has been removed. At that moment you substitute something for 'mommys' castrated penis and fixate on that sexually for the rest of your life.
Now I could pick this mentality apart in my sleep, but hey if your looking for a psychological reason take your pick. That was the 'grandfather' of psychology there and it is messed up. Don't think any other 'expert' is going to give you a good answer....
Honestly even looking back at the person who made the term, and his explanation of a traumatic event in ones life creating a unnatural link between object and sexual pleasure is quite stupid. Knowing how wide varied kinks are I find it very, VERY, difficult in thinking all these things where created in a period of intense emotional duress. I won't go into details but there are a lot of kinks out there which a child having their first orgasm or seeing something shocking, both are examples of 'emotional duress,' could explain.
Hell one I have, and no I won't explain it, doesn't even involve things that exist within this reality let alone something I would of been exposed to during an emotional high!
The thing that bothers me the most is that there are 'doctors' that want to medicate all fetishes away so we are all boring arseholes who will enjoy nothing more then 'socially acceptable' vanilla sex. Hope you like the missionary position folks!

People have different fetishes for different reasons. Someone who is into domination and Master slave stuff has obvious submissive or dominant personality traits, a whole lot of fetish activity is releated to the balance of power within a relationship.
Of course, something like, say, a foot fetish has very little to do the power in a relationship. That's a bit like asking why some guys prefer a nice ass to big tits, or why some girls like guys with big shoulders when others are more fascinated by their abs. It's just an attraction to physical traits of whatever gender you find attractive.
