The forum games, user groups, and the occasional fun/interesting thread. It's the only place I get my gaming news from and I'm far too lazy to find another forum that I'd be comfortable joining.

Because for any of its flaws and lowered traffic, it's still (I think) a good deal better than many of the alternatives.

There aren't that many game forums left, and of those that are around most are either so niche or toxic that The Escapist seems like a relatively fresh breath of air by comparison.

Besides, where else am I supposed to go? I'm old and don't understand tumbler, which from what I understand is where all the young hip kids go, and I already browse Reddit but just prefer ye olden internet forum system over the upvote/downvote thing for actual discussion.

I used to frequent Gamespy and their forums, back when Fargo was doing his thing and the community was active. Sadly that website died a slow lingering death and I hope the same doesn't happen to The Escapist.

I came to this site after watching an episode of zero punctuation and found a rich community that was ripe with fun and mischief. There were threads about nathan fillion and fire fly or maybe I'm just remembering the derailing with the fillion gifs. I had arrived weeks before the brony wars which flooded the escapist. I had fun, I made threads, went down to the basement had a few lessons there and continued on. "Then the fire nation attacked" scores of people came to host threads about two women Anita Sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn. Both women had made some people very angry and they went to war with their keyboards. When the smoke cleared it was only the beginning because it was not long until the next horror "Gamergate". These battles still rage on today but the fires don't burn as hot now. Many people on here fell whether it be to arguing one side or another one by one people left. The wars of gamergate ravaged our little home.

I come here to remember those times and mourn those who have gone...

OT: I love this site still and I will continue on because of those who still post the day these forums don't have a single post is the day I leave, plus I'm a lurker there is little chance I'm going to leave even if I don't post. These may not be the forums I came to love when I first came here but its still home.

Habit and Zero Punctuation.

Also, occasionally, it's fun to engage in conversation, what with this and other forums kind of being the only intellectual stimulation I get nowadays. Which is sad, I'll admit, but I don't do much reading anymore and gaming/other forms of media consumption/work kind of fill up all my time.

Most of you folks are all right and it's entertaining to read banter. Even the lot I disagree with on a regular basis.

No matter how douchey ya get. I love ya.

I don't doubt that there'd be a lot of fun people to hang out with here...just so long as we avoid an "ism" or whatever conversation in person. Though I'm all but certain those sorts of talking points would bear out quite a bit differently in a real life situation.

Occasional breaks help, to be sure, but I keep coming back.

Mostly cuz I still have friends here. I am far, far less active here than I was in the past, I lost interest in pretty much all the content around here over 2015. I've been hanging around a bit more the last few weeks or so but if I didn't have people I like to talk to on this site I'd be long gone. I certainly wouldn't stay for the "quality" of the average forum thread.
Don't worry, BB. I'll never leave, so you'll always have a reason to stay.

Honestly I ask myself that question a lot. Mostly because of my few friends left here and the occasional fun thread that pops up. I guess I also can't help and like a lot of my fellow old timers too. Though the losses have been heavy recently with us old people.

Habit mostly, like quite a few others. It has one of the best formats of any site I've seen though. Suppose I just got used to how it looks and I just prefer forums over comment sections any day. Also, whoever created this site's usergroup stuff is just amazing. A chat that extends up to 350 or so pages of 19 comments? That puts it in a good spot between other smaller types of group chats for (Skype, IRCs, etc.) and a semi permanent interest group (like a subreddit or little forum or something) that you could be gone from a long time and check up on much later. Just haven't seen too much like it anywhere else.

I also have to update Erin Dies With Us every time Grey decides to publish a comic. Although either someone will have to take my place between mid May to late July, or the updates to the group will be on hiatus because I'll lack any internet access during the time.

Because I can, because it's fun, because I'm olde, but also because it's still one of the best gaming forums on the web. That they generally allow most any topic is good too.

Because even with its decline in the past two years or so this is still just about the best videogame/entertainment forum I have ever found.

I mean, where else am I gonna go? GAF is a bad joke on so many levels, /v/ hates video games more on a good day then this site does on a bad one, GFAQs is poison, Steam forums are the Youtube comments of videogame boards, I hate the Reddit layout and the nicer boards tend to be single game focused (Destinythegame, DFO, ect.) rather than general discussion. Escapist strikes just the right balance in moderation and has decent site design plus a userbase that is generally worth engaging with, even if the constant negativity does get noisome.

Probably because it's the only forum I can imagine being worth signing up for and staying in. Despite the mess over the past year or two, this place is still one of my top places for gaming news and culture. It also has a lot of users I've come to recognize quite well, and often stop to read their posts. I don't post as much, but I really need to try and fix that somewhere down the line.

As far as actual content goes, it's the same with many. ZP and Critical Miss, cause I can't exactly get down with the new stuff. Overall, the place is still worth my PubClub price. I don't mind supporting it!

Variety of topics and moderation is fairly even-handed, allowing for discussion without trolling or simply ill-constructed arguments. If the rules need changed (adblock)or a topic relegated to its own subforum to maintain community integrity, it gets done. The last site I frequented before this - 1up - was ripe with preferential treatment, allowing for 2 specific users to be dicks to everyone else, new and old. Kinda why those forums died.

The PremierLeague usergroup is one reason.
The news are the other, it's my only source when it comes to gaming/movie news. So I come here to check what's happening.
Occassionally I find a thread I like to post in because I think I might have something smart to say, usually I don't.

I'm really only here for the articles. Well, comics and Zero Punctuation keeps bringing me back.

Also cringe. I keep an eye on the popular threads, look for one that explodes and cringe at all the arguments. Then when somebody comes in and mentions 'that' (because people seem to like to just to start more shit) the cringe only grows.

... God what am I doing with my life?

You know what...that's a really good question. The forums have become even more passively aggressive than they once were, as hard as that is to believe, and the ratio of conversations-to-arguments has skewed far more to the latter.

Great, now I have to stay, if only out of spite.
